... born this morning just before 2am at home, in water, as planned. Took a bit longer than the last one - about 6 hours - because she decided to come out fist first, a la superman (wonderwoman?). Also born in her caul (good luck if you are a sailor, apparently) so all in all quite an individual. 9lbs 3.5, masses of dark hair, and in the thickest coating of vernix ever seen, looked like she was ready to swim the channel...

She is called Marina Raphaela.

So that is me done with childbirth for this lifetime! Onto the next challenge. Feeding her - she has jaws of steel and a suck like an industrial traction engine so this is going to be fun...

oh pph it is an heirloom!

In medieval times the appearance of a caul on a newborn baby was seen as a sign of good luck. It was considered an omen that the child was destined for greatness. Gathering the caul onto paper was considered an important tradition of childbirth: the midwife would rub a sheet of paper across the baby's head and face, pressing the material of the caul onto the paper. The caul would then be presented to the mother, to be kept as an heirloom.
