Just having a discussion with my partner as I have no idea. What would you have for your funeral songs?

OP posts:
ShiteRider · 06/11/2024 19:26

Forever Young by David Guetta
Wildflowers by Tom Petty
Maybe Sunchyme

HappyNewYear2027 · 06/11/2024 19:27

Stayin Alive by the Bee Gees

Fizzadora · 06/11/2024 19:33

Jerusalem. I had it at my wedding and no one could reach the high notes except me. Made me laugh.

Fire by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown if it's a cremation.

Actually I'd quite like The Sound of Silence because I am so sick of the amount of noise everywhere these days and wish everyone and everything would just SHUT UP.

Cynic17 · 06/11/2024 19:34

I won't be having a funeral, but I think pop songs are too likely to be tacky or sentimental (or both!). A bit of the Mozart Requiem would be appropriate, I suppose, but I do generally prefer classical music without lyrics for funerals.

Abide with me. It's so suitably weepy. And that American one Shall we gather at the river is quite nice. And uplifting.

Gymnopodie No. 1 by Eric Satie. I had it at my wedding when we signed the registry and at my husband's funeral.
Alternatively the aria from La Wally.

Tonight we fly - divine comedy

My parents funerals were in an old church at their request. So we had to go with hymns. At the first funeral a couple of the songs were not well known and it was pretty much just the vicar singing. So with the second funeral I picked songs most people would know from singing them at school. Very well known hymns.

Iona
Journey into the Morn

“Out of the night into the morn
Drawing us gently through the eye of the storm
Out of the sorrow into the joy
Where we'll dwell in the highlands with Him evermore
Sealed by a promise we are called to become
Those who endure 'til this race is won
And leaving their past, heading for more
Than our hearts can imagine the final reward”

When I'm thinking about it for myself; Enjoy Yourself, It's Later Than You Think (haven't decided which version yet).

When I remember how bruised everyone is likely to be feeling, whatever the end of my life looks like; either Traumerai by Robert Schumann, or Handel's Pastoral Symphony.

Wigglywoowho · 13/11/2024 21:00

It depends what your going for really.

I'd like

Stuck in the Middle With You 😂
Only one mum (tee and mo it's a kids TV show)
I'll be there - Jackson 5

It's my personality

My husband wants you'll never walk alone. He wants Zim Zimma as the curtain closes. But he's a funny sod too.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/11/2024 21:02

I've already told everyone I know that I want Ray Parker Jr's Ghostbusters at my funeral...!

jmh740 · 13/11/2024 21:05

My kids have told me I'm having Angels by Robbie williams one of my fave songs and it's what I walked down the aisle too. When I'm feeling down and need picking up a bit I put Lisa Stanstead all woman on and sing my heart out so they've said I'm having that too.

Jason Upton
The Garden Song

“I wanna build you a garden
In a dry and desert land
I'm gonna find a river there
I'm gonna find a river there

I have seen a garden grow
In a land filled with injustice
I have heard a mother's cry
For her child to live again

I have seen a withered soul
Fall like petals on the water
I have watched a flower grow
Slowly rising toward the sun

No one knows what God has seen
As humankind destroyed this Garden
With bleeding hands we'll plant the seeds
And He'll make all things new again
God will make all things live again”

- The Trapeze Swinger Iron and Wine. It’s a masterpiece.

For a hymn I’d have come thou fount of every blessing.

SemmaLina · 13/11/2024 21:09

I want a cremation , the coffin will make its entrance to Club Tropicana , which is my favourite, ever , song
Then at then end ( when everyone walks out ) Let it go , from Frozen , because I’ve always wanted to be able to sing , and that would be the song I’d sing ( if I’d ever been able to sing in tune )
if I had to choose a hymn , it would be All things bright and beautiful

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 13/11/2024 21:10

Mr Blue Sky - ELO

Amyleeritchards · 13/11/2024 21:13

WAP by Megan thee stallion

Ahwig · 13/11/2024 21:13

I'm on the top of the world looking down on creation by the carpenters. My dad heard it played at his friend's funeral and said he liked the thought of looking down on the world.
He was an atheist so he wasn't thinking of heaven when he said that. I had it played at both his and my mum's funeral and have told my husband I want it played at mine.

KoalaCalledKevin · 13/11/2024 21:15
