How early did your baby walk?

My daughter was crawling at 8 months and now at a week off 9 months she is looking like it won't be long before she is walking as she is cruising around the furniture and wanting to walk (although she hasn't got her balance yet) this is all a big shock to me as my son was 16 months old before he walked. Any other early walkers? not that she is walking just yet

Thanks

G

DS is just 11 months, has been walking for 3 1/2 weeks (crawled 5 1/2 mths, cruised 8 mths, started trying to let go 9 mths) - is getting better at it but looks like I have been beating him around the head with a stick he is so covered in bruises. Mind you - he is very proud of himself and has almost got the hang of looking for obstacled on the floor rather than tripping over toys so fingers crossed for fewer bruises soon!

Tidgypuds · 20/10/2008 10:13

DS - 11months
DD - 11months

My DD was tiny for her age at 11 months and looked more like a 6 month old. We were at the library one afternoon and I was sat on the floor reading to DD who was sat on my lap, she became bored and held on to my hands to stand up so she could pull more books off the shelves get another book.
There was a lady sat opposite who had been looking at DD and admiring her, not realising DD could walk as she didnt look old enough the lady launched her self across the floor on her belly at my DD to save her as she saw her let go of my hands and take a step whilst I wasnt looking. You should have seen her face when she realised she could walk, my DD gave her a filthy look and toddled off. The woman was like this

Twas very amusing.

DS1 walked really late and even then was shockingly bad at it. Big head, small feet a terrible combination

BexieID · 20/10/2008 10:22

Tom started walking at 15 months. It was quite funny, as one miute he was just standing on his own and the next he was off!

BexieID · 20/10/2008 10:26

In fact, the first time he stood up by himself, was on his first birthday wearing his first pair of Clarks shoes!

IdrisTheDragon · 20/10/2008 10:29

Both DS and DD walked at 15 months.

DS crawled at 8.5 months, cruised at 9 months and I was told he'd be walking soon. He wasn't

DD shuffled around at about 10.5 months, cruised maybe 13 months and walked at 15 months.

Madsometimes · 20/10/2008 11:17

dd1 18 months
dd2 19 months

Late walkers are hard to deal with too. They want to crawl in inappropriate places (eg shopping centres) and get grumpy when they are confined to the buggy too much. They also need more carrying and are too heavy to be easily managed. Plus there is the stress of wondering whether there is something wrong with your child.

Nemoandthefishes · 20/10/2008 11:19

Ds was 9.5mths
DD1 12.5mths even though she was cruising from about 8mths
DD2 8.5mths and she was tiny as she was still in 3-6mth clothes

sillybigsausage · 20/10/2008 19:16

DS1 - a week after his 1st birthday
DD - 9 months
DS2 - the day after his 1st birthday

MrsBumblebee · 20/10/2008 19:46

Agree that early crawling/whatever doesn't necessarily mean early walking. DS was quite early for crawling and very early for pulling himself up to standing and cruising, but now at 13 months he isn't even standing unsupported, let alone walking. Hey, it'll happen when it happens.

clam · 20/10/2008 19:56

My niece walked at 8.5 months. She was really tall for her age and my SIL found it a pain as other people expected more from her all round as they thought she was older.

clam · 20/10/2008 19:57

Obviously not a family trait, though, as my sister was nearly 2 when she finaly got off her backside.

Marne · 20/10/2008 20:00

dd1- 14 months
dd2- 8 months

ThemasterandmarGOREitas · 20/10/2008 20:06

dd at 10 months
ds1 at 6.5 months
ds2 at 12 months

Ewe · 20/10/2008 20:14

DD 7 months has been crawling for over a month and is always pulling herself up and cruising around. I am praying she just stops now but I think she does it because she is copying other babies at nursery.

She has such tiny feet I am hoping it won't be possible for her to physically walk on them yet!

Hulababy · 20/10/2008 20:18

DD walked at 10 months. She was cruising , holding one hand or furniture, from 5 months - a friend has a video of her at her child's party (aged 5 months, 1 week) dancing and cruising with some bigger girls.

She crawled at 8 months, but gave that up once she could walk.

MadMazza · 20/10/2008 20:20

DS1 - 15mo
DS2 - 22mo (bottom shuffled) but was talking in sentences at 18mo, and has just started reading at 3y 9m(self taught!!)

thisisyesterday · 20/10/2008 20:20

ds1 crawled at 7 months and walked at 8.5 months

ds2 crawled at 7months and walked at 9.5 mionths

Hulababy · 20/10/2008 20:20

Also agree the whole early walker = late talker is not always the case. DD talked very early on, first words from 6 months, 2 word sentences at 12 months, proper sentences before 18 months.

liahgen · 20/10/2008 20:24

dd1 crawled 6 mths, walked 9 mths
ds1 crawled 7 mths, walked 9 mths
ds2 crawled 8 mths, walked 13 mths
dd2 crawled 9 mths, walked 11, and half mths
dd3 crawled 10 mths, walked 17 mths, now 17 and half, still doesn't walk all the time.

thats if for now.

ginseng · 20/10/2008 20:25

WoW!!! that is amazing, i have a friend whos DD was the same, i couldnt believe how young she started talking! your DD obviously had a lot she wanted to tell you!!:-)

DD1 was able to walk at 10 months but never seemed to have the confidence to go with it. It was really frustrating as if my DH and I were stood about 10 metres apart she could walk from one to the other but unless there was someone standing with arms outstretched for her she just wouldn't walk. Finally we bought her reins and as soon as we put them on her just after 12 months she was up and walking as she thought we were holding them when we weren't. DD2 walked on her first birthday which was lovely!

TheDuchessOfNorksDied · 20/10/2008 20:33

DD1 walked at 16 months
DS1 walked at 11 months
DD2 walked at 18 months
DS2 .... hoping he'll walk earlier rather than later, 18 month olds are bloody heavy!

ChairmumMiaow · 20/10/2008 20:42

Mamahobgoblin - DS is fairly similar. Commandoing at about 6.5 months, crawling properly a few weeks later, and now at (just) 9 months, standing using anything he can get his hands on and starting to cruise.

I am, of course, pleased he's doing this stuff reasonably early, but OMG he's hard work. He's only happy crawling, eating, or being in the sling. Daytime naps in the cot are a thing of the past

How do you early-crawler/walker parents cope? (other than my strategy of going for 2 walks a day and as much soft-play etc as possible)

meandmyjoe · 21/10/2008 08:27

DS crawled at nearly 10 months but walked 2 days before his 1st birthday.
