We need to get the second size car seat for her. So many seem to be up to 18kg/4years. I can't see her only being 18kg at 4, as she's 12kg at 6mo. (9.8kg at birth) If you have a large baby, what did you do about car-seats? What age were they when they hit 18kg? Thanks Grin

Are you sure you aren't mixing up pounds and kilo's?

My DD1 was 4kg at birth, which was 8lb 11oz.

By my reckoning, your daughter was about 20pound at birth?

DD2 is 3 and about 18kg.

Turnipsandpumpkins · 26/11/2013 19:17

Um, could you be getting confused between lbs and kilos? My two year old is just 12 kg.
I think she was probably 9.8 pounds at birth, not kilos.

blueberrycupcake · 26/11/2013 19:18

9.8kg at birth! Really?
My DD is just about to turn 3 and she's 18kg and in the next stage car seat. Can't remember what she weighed at 6months though (not very helpful)

SigningGirl · 26/11/2013 19:18

hi,

are you mixing up kg and lbs? average babies are 7-8 pounds at birth. 9.8kg is 21 pounds which is an awful lot. hope that will help...

ToysRLuv · 26/11/2013 19:18

DS is 4.2 and weighes 16 kg. My nephew is 18 months and weighs around the same, so it varies. I know that's not very helpful, sorry! Yours might be 18 months, or so, when she hits 18 kg.

ObtuseAngel · 26/11/2013 19:18

Umm, silly question but are you sure you're not confused between lbs and kgs? 9.8 kg at birth is huge.

stargirl1701 · 26/11/2013 19:19

I guess you'll need to find a rear facing seat if you need to move her into a group 1 seat at 6 months. These people are great:

incarsafetycentre.co.uk

My DD is on the 50th centile so she's still in her group 0 seat at 14 months. I hope more experienced people will be along soon.

Turnipsandpumpkins · 26/11/2013 19:20

Oops. Actually he is 3 1/2,and 12kg. See I can't even get the age of DS2 right. (It has been a long couple of weeks!)Blush

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 19:20

You had a 21lb baby?

ToysRLuv · 26/11/2013 19:20

DS was 3.3 kg at birth - so a third of your DD! That can't be true, can it?

TheXxed · 26/11/2013 19:22

If you gave birth to a 9.8kg baby then I think we need to forget about the car seat and collectively pray for your vagina

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 19:23

Grin @ TheXxed

My money's on a c-section.

TheXxed · 26/11/2013 19:30

Angibolen i hope so, it would be a particularly cruel midwife to try any exit other than the sun roof.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/11/2013 19:30

I imagine it was a 9.8lb baby who is 12kgs at 6 month old (around 26lbs). My ds was 7lb 13oz at birth and around 21lbs at 5½ months so it wouldnt be too far fetched to have a 12kg 6 month old.

DS was 18kgs when he was just under the age of 3.

TheNumberfaker · 26/11/2013 19:31

Sorryit's Daily Mail but this says the biggest UK baby was 15lbs 8oz born in 1992.

You have mixed up metric and imperial!

ToysRLuv · 26/11/2013 19:33

Thank goodness for that!

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 19:38

I've Googled big babies, and this is infact increadible!!!!

I see what you've done....she was 9.8lb at birth and you are looking at car seats up to 18kg.....she'll be fine!!!!
Have a look at the weight chart in her red book to give you an idea of how big she'll be at 4.

wannabeanathlete · 26/11/2013 19:51

Ds was 9lb8 too.
He moved from a baby car seat to a rear facing f britax first class at about 9mo due to height and weight and we turned it forward facing just after he turned 12mo. He was about 12kg then.

he's now 2 and 14kg and we're just about to start looking for the next size up.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/11/2013 19:58

he has until 18kgs until he is too heavy for his current seat wannabeanathlete

missjulia · 26/11/2013 20:04

Look up your red book and follow the line? My DS 99.6 centile, weighed about 24lb at 6 months and now at 20 months is only about 33lb

HectorVector · 26/11/2013 20:07

My 3.7year old is 15kg so I'm not expecting him to be 18kg until he's over 4years.

Are you sure your 6 month old is 12kg?

mawbroon · 26/11/2013 20:08

My almost 4yo is only 13kg! Deffo some sort of mix up....

HectorVector · 26/11/2013 20:10

Ahh I see from other posts that we've established you are confusing pounds with kilos. Phew!

My DS weighed 8pound11oz at birth which is fairly large and as I just said at 3.7 years old he's now 15kg which I think is equivalent to 34ishpounds. So don't worry about up to 18kg car seats just yet.

nextphase · 26/11/2013 20:14

I think there is more to this than lb and kg.
12 kg at 6 months is massive, and way off the (boys) weight charts.
Equally, 12lb is tiny for 6 months. I guess the OP knows if her little girl is growing very fast or very slow.

How did you get to her weight?

Mine have always been slight, but at 4.5, is 16kg. So not much help, I'm afraid.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 26/11/2013 20:18

Their weight gain slows down hugely when they hit one year. If you look in your red book you should have centiles for 1-5 years as well (and 5-18!) so you can use that as a rough indicator.

But yes, DS was 3.04kg at birth, 13kg came at about 18 months but he's probably only about 19kg at age 5 - so in the first 18 months he put on 10 but in the last 3.5 years - over twice that time - he's put on just over half that.

However as she's only 6 months old have you looked at extended rear facing seats at all for her? She's very little to go forward facing as it's a lot of strain on their neck if you were to have an accident.
