If my almost-6mo is 12kg, how long til she's 18kg?

We need to get the second size car seat for her. So many seem to be up to 18kg/4years. I can't see her only being 18kg at 4, as she's 12kg at 6mo. (9.8kg at birth) If you have a large baby, what did you do about car-seats? What age were they when they hit 18kg? Thanks Grin

Sorry - yes, 9lbs8oz at birth. But the 12kg bit is correct Smile

It's a guess, but I think your DD will thin out when she gets going. If you assume that she will end up back on the lines on the growth charts then she will hit 18kg at 2.5 at the earliest.

My DD will probably hit 18kg at about 3 3/4. We have this seat which goes up to 25kg rather than 18kg. My parents asked if DD could go into the next size seat now. I have refused as DD is not reliable enough not to undo her belt (which she can't do with a 5 point harness).

ThisIsMeNow · 27/11/2013 08:48

Op have you spoken to anyone about your DD's weight? Only 12kg at 6mo is well off the charts. That's a massive change from her birth weight.

HectorVector · 27/11/2013 09:49

Like a previous poster said have you spoken to your HV or GP? 12kg is average for a 2 year old, not a 6 month old. Back to the car seat. You have to buy an appropriate one. Do not get one too big because you anticipate her getting bigger, it needs to be safe. She cannot go into a stage 2 seat yet IMO she's too young, I can't imagine it would be safe. As I said before my 3.7 year old is 15kg and went into the appropriate stage 2 seat at 3years old.

bigkidsdidit · 27/11/2013 09:54

Are you sure she's 12 kilos? My nearly 6 month DS is 9.3 kilos and that makes him 98th centile, he's a big boy. Have you weighed her accurately?

ThisIsMeNow · 27/11/2013 10:01

12kg is over 26lb which is more than triple her birth weight.
Are you sure you've got the numbers right?

bundaberg · 27/11/2013 10:19

agree with checking her weight again.

ds3 was 9lb 11oz at birth and gained weight rapidly. he was around 9kg at 6 months, which was hefty enough! can't imagine another 3 kg on top of that!

she needs to stay rear-facing at 6 months though, so if i were you i'd look into extended rear-facing seats. something like the britax 2 way elite will take her up to 25kg harnessed and can be turned forward facing later on although it's far, far safer rear-facing and can be kept that way untilk your child outgrows it

She's ebf. We plan to start baby-led weaning in the next few weeks.

And she's definately 12kg?

bangersmashandbeans · 27/11/2013 14:02

My 'chunky' 9 month old DS is 9.4kg...OP I think maybe you should take your baby to a weigh in clinic and get some help from a HV to ensure you are weighing correctly as I'd be very surprised if 12kg at under 6 months is correct. Apologies if I'm wrong though.

Reiltin · 27/11/2013 14:32

So I see some of you talking about a red book. I'm in Ireland so i don't have one. If anyone has one to hand, she was 4.3kg born, 8ish when she was 3 months and 12ish at almost 6mo. Are they all on the same line? The first two were 91-98 percentile but I don't know if we've veered above that now. Thanks!

bigkidsdidit · 27/11/2013 14:38

I have the boys' chart here. 4.3 at birth is 98th, 8 at 3 months is also 98th. 12 t 6 months is miles above the top of the chart- 99.6th centile for 6 months is 10.5 kilos.

SolomanDaisy · 27/11/2013 14:38

I just checked and it is well off the charts. My off the charts DS was just over 10kg at 6 months, he's 2.5 now and has only gained 1.5kg in the last year. He was also off the charts for length, have you measured that?

bigkidsdidit · 27/11/2013 14:38

Oh and that's for boys, but I don't know if boys are heavier at this age.

SolomanDaisy · 27/11/2013 14:40

At 6 months and exclusively breastfeeding, don't worry about her weight btw. That's what we were told anyway.

Jojay · 27/11/2013 14:40

My just turned 5 yo boy weighed in at 18 kg last week. He's pretty average sized.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 27/11/2013 14:44

99.6th centile at 6 months for girls is only 10kgs - what size clothes is she in?

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 27/11/2013 14:55

It does seem an odd growth pattern - the weights you say plot almost as a straight line rather than a curve. I know not all babies are on the charts but she's not following the same pattern which might be a worry.

ThisIsMeNow · 27/11/2013 15:15

Op who weighed the baby last? Could they have for their numbers mixed up? Have you got scales at home you could check with? It just seems a massive shift off the curve?

hazeyjane · 27/11/2013 22:47

12 kg would be about 95 percentile for a 14 month old, so for a 6 month old would be very unusual. 8kg at 3 months would be pretty off the scale too. Is she very very long?!

Abbylovescakes · 08/12/2013 21:19

This thread has kept me occupied! Was the baby's weight ever ascertained?
