If my almost-6mo is 12kg, how long til she's 18kg?

We need to get the second size car seat for her. So many seem to be up to 18kg/4years. I can't see her only being 18kg at 4, as she's 12kg at 6mo. (9.8kg at birth) If you have a large baby, what did you do about car-seats? What age were they when they hit 18kg? Thanks Grin

Wannabe your DS needs to be 15kg minimum before you can put him into a high backed booster seat.

ThisIsMeNow · 26/11/2013 20:26

I'm beyond confused with opk's weights Confused but you can get ERF seats like britax etc that she would be safer in for now as she is only young.

HectorVector · 26/11/2013 20:26

Oh gosh nextphase you are right 12lb at 6 months is small. I'm baffled now.

Moanyoldboot · 26/11/2013 20:29

Ds is 5 and 19kg so you have a while yet :)

nextphase · 26/11/2013 20:30

Wannabe - you can stay in the stage 2 til 18kg.
Unless the top of his ears are over the sides, keep him where he is for a while.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 26/11/2013 20:32

I'm intrigued about the weight now too! I just assumed 12kg was right but I don't think it can be - perhaps OP has mixed up the minimum and maximum weights for the car seat gap and her DD is 8kg (1kg off 9kg which is the minimum for forward facing). I remember having a similar worry, DS was shooting up kilogram by kilogram and I was worried he'd be over 13kg by 1 year but he was nowhere near.

purplemurple1 · 26/11/2013 20:39

Good to hear they slow down dramatically, my DS was born 3kg and is now almost 7kg and not quite 3months. I was starting to get a bit concerned about the car seats as well.
(He isn't settled on a growth line yet so I can't follow that to see where he is headed, only that his head, height and weight are matched.)

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 21:15

purplemurple1 3kg is tiny!

AuditAngel · 26/11/2013 21:18

3kg is pretty tiny, DD2 weighed 3kg at 36+1, whereas DD1 weighed 4kg at 37+4. So a week and a half difference and 1kg!

ilovepowerhoop · 26/11/2013 21:20

I think purplemurple1 is probably more concerned about her ds having more than doubled his birth weight by 3 months. 7kg is still only about 15lbs so plenty of time before he outgrows his car seat. Most infant carriers are ok up to 13kgs (around 29lbs)

ToysRLuv · 26/11/2013 21:23

3 kg is not tiny. I weighed that when I was born at 38 weeks. DS was 38 weeks exactly and 3.3 kg. That was pretty much on the 50th centile, if I remember right.. He has since come down the centiles and is now roughly on the 25th.

HectorVector · 26/11/2013 21:26

This thread has gone a bit weird 3kg is about 6lb8oz. That isn't tiny. It's slightly smaller than average but not tiny. 9.8kg at birth (I'm not sure that's even possible).

purple your dc is doing fine. They do slow down. Your Sv will lot continue to almost double their weight every 6 months! :)

HectorVector · 26/11/2013 21:27

That was supposed to read 'your DC will not continue to almost'.

bundaberg · 26/11/2013 21:29

aww 3kg is pretty tiny! only 6lb something isn't it?

well, it's tiny to me cos all mine were at least 3lb heavier than that lol.

bundaberg · 26/11/2013 21:30

purple agree that there is no need to worry! is he breastfed? i only ask because bf babies have a tendency to gain a lot quite quickly, and then plateau...

but yes, they def slow down Grin

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 21:33

3kg is tiny, compared to 9.8kg!!!!

My DSs around 4kg, which I think of as normal.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 26/11/2013 21:34

3kg is tiny but definitely within the realms of normal :) DS was 3.04 which is 6lb 11.

HectorVector · 26/11/2013 21:38

Weird thread. I want the OP to come back. I've even been googling 'weight' in case there are any other units that the OP might be thinking of.

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 21:40

I too want the OP to come back.

I've had lots of fun looking at massive babies. [girn]

nooka · 26/11/2013 21:45

Both my children were just over 3kg (6.11 and 6.13) and neither of them were particularly small, except in the way that all newborns are. However they were both tall so moved into bigger clothes, car seats etc fairly rapidly.

Pascha · 26/11/2013 21:48

Going off the subject of your baby's weight for a moment, there is an option to get a group 123 seat which would last from 9kg up to 36kg (although you can't turn your baby forward facing til at least 9 months old and preferably a lot later than that). DS1 (3.2) is in a Kiddy Guardian Pro which is group 123 and he weighs 15kg. He was ok in it at 1 year old.

bluecheeseforbreakfast · 26/11/2013 22:22

My baby was 10 pounds at birth and 11kg at 6 months, he's now 11 months and still 11 kg. He crawled and cruised every waking hour from 6 months. I was concerned about him being a giant but I think he was just making reserves for all the crawling and walking.

heidihole · 26/11/2013 22:23

I want OP to put her baby on the scales (clearly noting if it's pounds or kg!) and come back and update us.

purplemurple1 · 26/11/2013 22:54

Yes it was more than doubling in less than 3 months I was concerned about but he is still in the normal range so I don't think he will be a giant. Ff now as he was failing to thrive and dropped 15% - oh how quickly that changed!

likelytoasksillyquestions · 27/11/2013 06:43

purple, my DS also doubled his weight within three months (born at 3.3, nearly 7kg at 12 weeks). I miss his chunky little thighs - he dropped to 50th centile once he got mobile and has stayed there ever since. No surprise to any of us - it's exactly the weight trajectory my sister and me followed as babies. :)
