there is an article in the Daily Mail today which talks about some research where they gave eye q to toddlers. their behaviour improved from very poor to very good in 5 months. their vocabulary and language also improved and concentration.

it also talks about loads of other trials with eye q as well.

have a look at it if you can. I haven't heard of any other fish oils that have done trials, has anyone else?

i've tried eye q and eskimo for kids with my dd (2.2) but am having trouble getting her to take either of them. I've tried neat on a spoon and mixed in with foods - but she doesn't take it. Anyone had any success with giving it to a reluctant toddler????

Just saw this thread and thought I might add that my step son has Aspergers Syndrome and ADHD. His child phychiatrist recommended that we use fish oils as he had been involved in research on this and behaviour in children. He recommended a brand called VegEPA which is pure fish oil in evening primrose oil. He reckoned this was the most pure!

We are all on this now, including DS who will be one on Sunday (I just squiet a capsule into his food)..

Just wondering about the Boots Smart Omega 3 Fish Oil (Strawberry Flavour). It does say that it is free from artificial colours, sweetners and flavours. If that's the case why does it taste of strawberries? Can't see strawberries on the ingredients label?!!!!!!!! These things are sooooo confusing.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 17/12/2005 09:34

Do they have to list nature identical flavourings?

loppy · 19/12/2005 14:57

I think the same rules apply to fish oil supplements as foods because they are a food supplement. If they contain aspartame they cannot say 'no artificial sweeteners' the same goes for flavours so if it says 'no artificial flavours' it should be OK.

Shimmers, have to say I am confused by the Boots Smart Oil one, as what is in there that is natural and makes it taste of stawberries but isn't strawberries???!!

Reckon that's one to ask the pharmacist when you're next in there

Shimmers · 19/12/2005 23:19

Lunaturkey, what's the underfives one called?

Thanks.

i went into our small independant health food shop to ask about these the other day. the guy there is currently involved in a trial at a local school and has worked for several companies who manufacture this stuff.

he said the first fish oil to make these claims said it was one molecule in the oil that helped, the second company said it was a different one (cos they couldnt just copy). he actually recommended the cheapest one they sold as it contained loads of both of these molecules (sorry thats not very scientific but i cant remember their names). he also said if you buy stuff in blister packs or shiny bottles (i think it was eye q in the shiny bottle) you are paying an extra £1 - £2.50 for the packaging.

i have yet to try ds on these, but just thought i would share what i was told. the ones i bought are soft capsules which you have to swallow whole. ds is only 6 but he said thats the age group they are doing the trial on atm and most kids have no problem swallowing them at all. i think its definately worth asking rather than just buying from a large chain of shops as i would have just gone for any assuming they were all the same. fingers crossed it helps ds

bobbybobbobbingalong · 20/12/2005 08:53

Isn't the shiny bottle to help keep the oil in good condition. Bob's flax seed oil is always in black, because sunlight will turn it rancid.

I buy the cheapest flax seed oil, but then they all seem to be organic and only contain flax seed.

jinglinggoblin · 20/12/2005 12:58

i understand the thinking there, but the same company also had oil in sachets, so if a polished chrome bottle is necessary to preserve the stuff i imagine the sachets would be no use. it was a very posh, pretty bottle. would look lovely on the shelf but that wasnt what i wanted it for. the one i bought is just in a plastic tub

mummysandy · 20/12/2005 15:01

I've got the sachets and they're a kind of foil wrap - I think for the same reason as the metal bottles.

jinglinggoblin · 20/12/2005 18:50

that probably is the case then, but cant you just keep them out of direct sunlight? the blister packs have foil on the back but not the front and the ones i bought have no foil at all. they are using the cheap ones for the trial at the school near me so will be interesting to see if they get the same results even without the expensive protective bottle

(am not having a go at anyones choice of brand or anything, its just what the man told me and he did say he had worked for them).

Have you tried the smart milk with Omega 3. It's not fish-based but same stuff and more palatable.
