fish oil trial in the paper today

there is an article in the Daily Mail today which talks about some research where they gave eye q to toddlers. their behaviour improved from very poor to very good in 5 months. their vocabulary and language also improved and concentration.

it also talks about loads of other trials with eye q as well.

have a look at it if you can. I haven't heard of any other fish oils that have done trials, has anyone else?

Oh b%gger, ds has the haliborange ones, I never noticed they have aspartame. So we give fish oils for good learning skills, with aspartame whicvh has been implicated in short-term memory loss ????????????????

RudolphsAuntMabel · 15/12/2005 17:31

Same here. I didn't notice. Shame on me!! I check all juices etc for aspartame but didn't think to check a supplement!!

Do any of the ones without taste as 'nice' as the haliborange ones? Anyone know? I've struggled to get DS to take it anyway, there's not a snowballs chance in hell he'll take one that tastes worse than the one he'd got.

Do sunflower seeds contain Omega 3?

hovely · 15/12/2005 20:28

There are several vegetarian oil blends which are high in Omega 3 & 6. If I recall correctly flax oil and/or hemp oil are v high in Omega 3. At the moment I am trying Holland & Barrett's own blend, it contains flax & sunflower & some other veg oils. Previosuly I used to buy Udo's Choice but it was much more expensive. I just pour in a slosh into porridge, smoothies, and whatever else. It has a very mild flavour, I am happy to have it 'bare' on salad (DD and DS won't eat it like that).

hovely · 15/12/2005 20:42

just found this about vegetarian sources of EFAs and DHAs.
It does suggest that non-vegetarian sources are more accessible, see at the foot of the page

and this one about refining fish oils (and why tinned tuna is no good - apparently the canning process means the fish oil gets replaced with a non-omega 3 oil)

i'm going to get some eye-q today and scrap the haliborange. ds doesn't get on well with aspartame - can't believe they put it in it! kind of defeats the objective doesn't it.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 16/12/2005 09:04

Flax seed oil seems to be working well for ds. Organic, cold pressed, tastes of nothing, mixes well with chocolate dairy food and probiotics, no sweeteners or colours or anything else for him to be allergic to.

It would be great if they would do a study to see if it's almost as good, but without all the other worries that go with fish oil, like allergies, heavy metals, aspartame etc.

mummysandy · 16/12/2005 09:25

Nick Ferrari announced on LBC this morning that he's doing his own trial with eye q! He had to listen to 10 sounds before he started taking them. Apparently he's going to test his memory once he's been taking them for about a month

loppy · 16/12/2005 09:43

I didn't hear it this morning but he was bombarded with callers the other morning when he talked about fish oils. Everyone was calling in saying they either used eye q or morepa.

Hi, i read about these fish oils and decided to try my dd on one. Im using Smart Omega 3 fish oil, its only a boots make, was wodering if this is similiar to eye q etc??? ALso i kinda feel like im dosing dd up with loads, i give her abidec as i think she doesnt eat enough so top her up with that lol, now fish oils and then at the moment im givin her medicine for her cough and cold, does anyone know if theres any harm in this???

mummysandy · 16/12/2005 11:25

I think the Boots smart omega 3 is a high DHA version (thecattleareALOHing clarified that DHA is important for babies and EPA is important once the children are older). eye q is a high EPA supplement.

Also... the boots one has aspartame in

thecattleareALOHing · 16/12/2005 11:25

No abidec and fish oils are fine and harmless.

Prettyfull · 16/12/2005 11:35

Hi again!! Whats aspartame??? Im assuming its good lol

mummysandy · 16/12/2005 11:46

Aspartame is an artificial sweetner that has, over the last 20yrs, been linked with all sorts of things from cancer to memory loss. It was front page news yesterday. Have a look at the article from the Guardian \link{http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/Story/0,,1667771,00.html}

mummysandy · 16/12/2005 11:47

Sorry, the link thing didn't work!

RudolphsAuntMabel · 16/12/2005 12:22

just been to Boots and gasped at the cost of the Eye-Q stuff in comparison to the rest! It's a lot of cash to spend on something that there's no chance DS will take. I read a few other packets and came away with Efamol Efalex chewies in blackcurrant - no aspartame. poss not as much EPA as some of the others but there's no point buying loads of good quality ones that he'll not take is there?

Prettyfull · 16/12/2005 12:49

Hi mummysandy, so which one do you use???? Maybe i shouldnt carry on using the boots one??? I gace it to my dd for a bout 3 days but now im not to sure if to carry on, could anyone recommend one??

RudolphsAuntMabel · 16/12/2005 12:51

Depends if you kids'll take 'em. They've got to taste good for my DS or he'll not entertain the idea.

mummysandy · 16/12/2005 13:37

Hi Prettyfull. I use the eye q smooth ones (3for2 in Boots) which work with my ds but I know other people that find the eskimo 3 one really good too (although I'm not sure where you buy it from).

bobbybobbobbingalong · 16/12/2005 17:32

Prettyful - you have to take them for weeks to see a difference. If there is not much missing I would take it back to boots and tell them you have heard that Aspartame is banned with the US Airforce because it affects the ability to concentrate and can't understand why they would put it in a supplement to help you concentrate. Demand your money back.

I am that people are making these cheap version that probably won't work because of the ingredients they mix it with.

Prettyfull · 16/12/2005 17:47

Thankyou all, wish id just bought eye q then if that safe, it was onyl a matter of £4 difference!!! Shouldnt have been trying to save the pennies!!! Thanks for advise.

Prettyfull · 16/12/2005 17:48

sorry, one more thing, when i went to boots i mailny bought the boots make of fish oil as it said from 6 months. My dd is 16 months now just wondered if yuo can get eye q as a liquid suitable for this age??

misdee · 16/12/2005 18:38

dd2 ios back on eye-q. i am mixing the vanilla oil with chocolate milkshake, so far she is taking it ok. last time we saw a vast improvement in her concentration, but then she refused milk for a year and would take the oil.
