there is an article in the Daily Mail today which talks about some research where they gave eye q to toddlers. their behaviour improved from very poor to very good in 5 months. their vocabulary and language also improved and concentration.

it also talks about loads of other trials with eye q as well.

have a look at it if you can. I haven't heard of any other fish oils that have done trials, has anyone else?

lots of fish oil companies have done similar trials in schools. they usually come out with similar results. Many of the trials are published in journals or through universities and dont make it to the newspapers.

i give ds 3 years them, i thought i could not tell until i stopped giving him them, now he back on them

loppy · 08/12/2005 11:25

thanks for messages,

have been looking on internet and found that another trial with eye q was published in a journal called Pediatrics so hopefully that proves its a good one.

dd is 4 and doing OK at school but concentration is definitley not what it should be. I think I'll try eye q. has anyone tried the smooth version as there is no way she'd take capsules?

thanks!!

Tried liquid - it's foul! Even I couldn't take it. Have a friend who's DS takes it though. You could try putting it in juice??

I think i have seen an ad for some chewable ones - not EyeQ though. Try Boots?

CARoLsingersKickingatmydoor · 08/12/2005 11:55

Cod liver oil yeukk I can still taste that now.[puke emoticon]
my parents were very cruel

ruty · 08/12/2005 15:01

any idea when they should start taking it? My ds is 14 months and i'm not sure if he is too young.

bethski · 08/12/2005 15:06

Haliborange do chewable ones - my 9 year old loves them!

littlechristmaself · 08/12/2005 15:08

Haliborange are best

PantomimEDAMe · 08/12/2005 15:12

I give ds old-fashioned cod-liver oil and malt from a jar. Sticky and sweet so appeals to a toddler's refined palate. And a lot cheaper than all these supplements. Get it from an independent chemists.

RudolphsAuntMabel · 08/12/2005 15:12

ruty I think most say 3yrs, so yup 14months is too young.

RudolphsAuntMabel · 08/12/2005 15:13

is cod liver oil rich in omega 3 though?

PantomimEDAMe · 08/12/2005 15:26

Yup, that's where all the omega-3 in supplements comes from. Oily fish - omega3 - cod liver oil, mackerel, etc. etc. (Canned tuna doesn't count as canning takes out the omega-3.) Vegetarians can get it from flaxseed or linseed oil.

Epiffany · 08/12/2005 15:33

eye q has really helped my dd with her speech delay, we saw massive improvements within 4 days with her concentration and speech

Epiffany · 08/12/2005 15:34

dd loves the lemon one she has it no probs, she is 3

cacaboo · 08/12/2005 16:11

ruty there is one called mumomega infancy, made by equazen, they are little capsules that you open and then squirt the oil into a bottle or food. They say you can give it from when baby is weaned onto solids.

RudolphsAuntMabel · 08/12/2005 16:14

Epifanny - 4 days! WOW that's fantastic. And thinking about it we've been forcing DS1 to take Omega fish twists (capsules shaped liked fish that you twist the tail off and squeeze to release all that yummy goodness) for about a week now, and we were just saying last night how well his speech is coming on now (he's also got delayed speech) maybe that's the reason? God that'd be great! He starts reception classes at the local primary school in April and we want him to be as caught up as he can be by then so he doesn't get teased or misunderstood.

mandieb · 08/12/2005 17:38

I got the haliborange ones and they do not have enough of the right stuff in them (just compare the eye q with the haliborange ) So it was eyeq for me .

ruty · 08/12/2005 17:58

oh thanks for that cacaboo - will google them

annobal · 08/12/2005 19:09

Which product from the eye q range would I give a 2 year old and a 10 month old?

annobal · 08/12/2005 19:10

Sorry - posted too soon...And what dosage?

loppy · 09/12/2005 09:53

have been researching, reckon the eye q liquid or the eye q smooth for a 2 year old and the mumomega infancy for the 10 month old.

got the smooth yesterday for dd4 and went down well this morning, could be novelty value, we'll see!

just to add my 2 cent...I think Eskimo oil is better than eyeQ. In a study by the Food Safety Authority in Ireland they compared all the main brands of fish oil and eskimo came out on top as the one with the least impurities/toxins. "higher nature" came second, I think.

Eskimo do a regular oil and small capsules, both of which are lemon flavour. They also do a kids version, for under 12's, and it is tutti-frutti flavour.
They have no suger/artifical flavours/colours.
You only need to use a 5ml teaspoon (and
only half that for babies and toddlers), so it lasts quite long.
They use fish from the artic seas (hence the eskimo name!) and are therefore very pure.
(there is a lot of debate over what fish eyeQ use, and how natural their flavours are, and whether they have artifically raised the levels of epa/dha in it)

Anyway, as a nutritionist and health shop owner I highly reccommend the Eskiom brand, and have used it with my 2 toddlers from about 9 months old. It is fine to use as soon as they are on solids, about 1 or 2ml would be enough at this age.

FrostyTheGloworm · 09/12/2005 10:13

forgot to say I think you can only get it in health shops, but I'm not 100% sure.

thecattleareALOHing · 09/12/2005 10:16

14months not too young! The IQ mini are very suitable for babies - just open the capsule and squeeze into milk and food.

ruty · 09/12/2005 10:38

thanks aloha - and gloworm i think i will try the eskimo brand. been wondering about mercury content of some of the oils, some of them come from tuna fish...
