fish oil trial in the paper today

there is an article in the Daily Mail today which talks about some research where they gave eye q to toddlers. their behaviour improved from very poor to very good in 5 months. their vocabulary and language also improved and concentration.

it also talks about loads of other trials with eye q as well.

have a look at it if you can. I haven't heard of any other fish oils that have done trials, has anyone else?

ds has now rejected the IQ smooth in vanilla flavour, presumably because they taste of fish. Off to find an alternative. Made more difficult because he is also off yoghurt.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 09/12/2005 10:43

I give the Higher Nature "Smart Fish" to 8mo ds and 3yo dd - it comes in sachets and is a lemon flavoured paste. DD actually likes it! Ds gets his on spoon.

FrostyTheGloworm · 09/12/2005 10:51

we have just recently started selling the Smart Fish ones as an alternative for those kids who dont like the taste of the eskimo oil.
it comes in orange and lemon, and comes in individual sachets, the paste is a similar consistency to margarine which some kids prefer to the oily feeling of most fish oil.

thecattleareALOHing · 09/12/2005 10:53

Ds like smart fish. Think will have to reorder.

Hulababy · 09/12/2005 10:58

Been giving them to DD, age 3.5yo. But having problems after a couple of weeks as she is refusing to take the chewable tablets. Says they are yukky. Tried the orange ones, and some lemon and lime ones. Not sure whether to keep going or if it is worth the hassle.

FrostyTheGloworm · 09/12/2005 10:59

you can get the smart fish direct from Higher Nature (who make it).
smart fish

they do trial sachets for 55p...great for anyone who hasn't tried it before, no need to buy a whole box and have your kids turn their nose up at it!

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 09/12/2005 11:02

You can get the lemon SmartFish from Nutricentre. I use them because you also get Tesco clubcard points.

keep trying Hulababy! some brands taste fishier than others, eskimo and smart fish taste less fishy as they use better quality fish from unpolluted seas.

also just realised that higher nature deliver FREE to UK, no matter how little you order!

Hulababy · 09/12/2005 11:18

Will try. Dh isn't convinced by it. But he never is. Although her behaviour and concenration isn't a problem, I just think the brain development and healthy aspects of it are worth dioing, as DD doesn't like oily fish so doesn't get it from there.

mummysandy · 09/12/2005 11:25

You should try the eye q smooth which is what my DS takes, this is the one that was used for the trial that the papers wrote about yesterday. I phoned the manufacturer and asked for a free sample so DS could try before I bought a whole pack.

I was giving him haliborange before but my friend passed me an article on aspartame so I started checking the ingredient labels on everything I bought... you wouldn't beleive how many fish oils for children contain aspartame, it's disgusting

loppy · 09/12/2005 11:26

I went for eye q because as far as I could see its the only one with research behind it. Apart from the trial done with Sure Start which is government funded, another trial with schools in Durham was also with eye q. This was a clinical trial with dummy pills as well so it did prove that eye q worked.

I don't think any of the other ones like smart fish and haliborange have these trials although on the smartfish website they talk about the Durham trial so its confusing as that was definitely with eye q

Hi loppy

You're right about the research. If you phone for the free sample they include the research results with it

FrostyTheGloworm · 09/12/2005 12:11

to clear up some of the confusion...
the durham trial used eyeq, but the results they found would apply to most fish oils, unless you were using a really poor quality brand with hardly any fish oil in it.

the point about eyeq verus the likes of eskimo or smart fish is quality/ingredients/toxins etc. if you search mumsnet last year or year before there were loads of threads on this, many children seem to react badly to eyeq but are fine with other brands.

at the end of the day, regardless of which is best, as long as you are using a reasonably decent brand, use whichever one your child is willing to take...children are notoriously fussy! any is better than none

littlechristmaself · 09/12/2005 13:35

so who do we phone for sample then???

PantomimEDAMe · 09/12/2005 13:40

Does anyone have children who will happily eat oily fish such as salmon? Ds used to wolf salmon down, which was fab, but has gone off it in a big way so I resorted to buying cod liver oil.

ruty · 09/12/2005 14:09

yes my ds has just started rejecting salmon i used to buy him wild pacific salmon [only for him not us v pricey!] and at 13 months he would eat it and now nearly 15 months not at all.

Furball · 09/12/2005 14:12

PantomimEDAMe - how old is your ds? the thing is with cod liver oil, it has too much vitamin A in.

lewislewis · 09/12/2005 14:40

My ds eats salmon once a week, and he is 2.3, he also eats sardines (sometimes fresh, other times from a can), mackerel (again sometimes fresh, sometimes from a can), and he has eggs 3 times a week, we buy the Columbus brand which has added fishy oils. This seems sufficient to me, though i have no idea. I thought only 3+ children should have supplements, but maybe it depends on their diet. We are so far lucky that he eats pretty much anything. Might become more fussy in the future though.

ruty · 09/12/2005 16:40

i asked ds's dietician today, and she said a supplement would be ok at his age. i think the amount of fish and eggs your ds eats tho lewis should be more than enough. my ds can't eat eggs.

goldenoldie · 09/12/2005 22:04

M&S sell milk with Omega 3 added - no, it has no fishy smell/taste at all.

littlechristmaself · 10/12/2005 11:04

on netmums free trial for eq smooth

mummysandy · 12/12/2005 08:33

Thanks littlechristmaself
Which part of netmums... I can't find it!

wads · 12/12/2005 19:42

another vote for eskimo. Better taste so can be taken off spoon, unlike eyeQ which needs disguising & is much greasier. Also ran out of eskimo & gave DS eyeQ for a week - behavior went right down. Plus eskimo seems to work out cheaper as only 1 spoon a day needed due to higher concentration.

homemama · 12/12/2005 19:43

Ruty, if you're still looking at this thread, I just wanted to say that we've recently seen someone about DS's gut problems/problems with gluten etc.

I asked about fish oils and she said for children like DS, we should only use eskimo oil because of the impurities of the others.
