DH and I have been trying to teach our almost 14mo DD about animals, namely what noises they make.

She got the hang of meiow (prob as we have 2 cats) but had real probs with any of the others, she'd just look at us blankly and then shout 'MEIOW!' no matter which animal we pointed at in the book. We took her to a stately home when we were on holiday and they have pigs. She excitedly shouted 'MEIOW' when she spotted them ! This has now become a bit of a recurring theme chez WSM.

However, DD just pulled DS2's DVD stacking unit over and picked up Scooby Doo. She pointed at Scooby and shouted 'Doggy !', closely followed by 'Oof !'. AT LAST !!!!!! Of course I now have to clear up all the blinkin' DVDs on the floor

Great! Isn't it fantastic when they start to say 'proper' recognisable words to the right things?

My DS2 and your DD must be about the same age (DS2 14 months next week)?
He's been saying 'wu, wu' (woof woof) at any kind of animal for the last few weeks, but then yesterday picked up a small plastic farmyard duck and said 'du, du' closely followed by 'cack, cack1'.
Oh, don't you just love them???

lilibet · 25/09/2003 13:06

Ah bless, Love the thought of you both mooing and nee nawing all the time!

WSM · 25/09/2003 13:08

DD will be 14 months on the 8th of Oct (birth date 08.08.02)

Aww WSM how sweet! Doggy! and Cack Cack!

My dd is nearly 13 months and in the last couple of weeks can say

Fisssssss (Fish - she has an anti slip bathmat with goldfish on it and when I say "go and find the Fish" she shouts Fisss Fiss Fissss and scuttles off to the bathroom to stare at them!)

Hup (says to self when standing up from sitting)

WUF (to dog) and ROODAH (to dog, called Ruby but this is her version lol)

She also does monkey impressions at the monkey page of Dear Zoo and bounces up and down.

This is such a sweet age isn't it?

WSM · 25/09/2003 13:15

Bless. Esp like 'Hup' !

DS2's others at the moment are:
"uh-Oh" (very Teletubby-like) after dropping something...
"Ba, Ba " (Bye Bye)
"mi, mi, mi mi" (I want my milk now)

Sb34 - I'd forgotton how rapidly they learn language between 1 and 2! Amazing really!

pidge · 25/09/2003 13:23

I like "Roodah"!!!

My dd (14 months) has "dodu" for doggies and all other animals, plus pushchairs, aeroplanes and anything else that causes her excitement.

But she does also have "dada" for her bathtime duck - entertainingly the same word as for "daddy".

And she knows the anser to "What goes woof woof" and "What goes quack quack", but if you ask "What goes Miaow Miaow" she looks really quizzical as if she thinks you're an idiot and shouts "dodu"

Mo2 · 25/09/2003 13:27

Oh, forgot, we also have the WHOLE spectrum of car/ police car/ fire engine noises, as he is COMPLETELY potty about wheeled vehicles:

"room, room" (Vroom)
"neeeawwneeaww" (fire/police car)
"shug shug shug" (tractor - "tactor" )

Ooooh, I want to rush home to play with him now.... (at work currently, )

Northerner · 25/09/2003 13:27

Gosh - my ds is 18 months and he has only recently started saying recognised words. My particular faves are:

Suuuuuse - as he thrusts his shoes at me, meaning he wants to go outside

Moooore - more of anything he has been enjoying

Mummeeeeee - when he wants me. This is just the best.

My son does seem to have a habit of 'stretching' his words.

Enid · 25/09/2003 13:28

dd2 crawled yesterday. She's 11 months and was the last one in her toddler group to crawl. Our hv wants to refer her for checks as she won't bear any weight on her legs, so it was a real encouragement that she is actually crawling! Hurray!

WSM · 25/09/2003 13:28

We also have 'Uh-oh' after dropping or throwing. She has developed a horror of anything sitting on her highchair tray and makes sure it is on the floor pretty sharpish. She also likes to hold stuff over the side of her highchair (juice cup etc), wait for you to look at her and then just let go - 'UH OH !'. Utterly infuriating and charming in equal measure. She is truly a minx.

my DS (2.2yrs)is so cute when he says "oh dear me" in a broad Yorkshire accent if something goes wrong.

& woweeee cool for something he loves (mostly Thomas)

I can't believe how much clearer his speech has suddenly become

WSM · 25/09/2003 13:29

Well done Enid Jnr

Woweee Cool! - I LOVE IT!

Think I'm gonna start using at work:

Colleague: "here's that proposal you wanted"

Me: "Woweee, Cool!"

Will they think I've gone nuts?

Bogwoppit · 25/09/2003 13:39

the woweee & cool have longer vowel sounds the more pleased he is.

Thomas toys in shops get woweeeeeeeeeeeee coooooooooooool. whereas a bog standar car gets woweee coool.

glad my Ds isn't only one who elongates words Northener.

fio2 · 25/09/2003 13:54

No my ds does it too Bye-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Congrats to all you proud mums

Chinchilla · 25/09/2003 14:03

My ds (2y 2m) has recently started saying 'gree' rather than 'gv' for green. He also says 'Uh Oh'...curse of Teletubbies. He says 'Oh NO' if he wants to draw our attention to something even slightly wrong.

He makes me laugh because he recognises all numbers from 0-9, and can say all of them except 1, 7 and 9. If you ask him where 1 is, he will point to it, but if you ask him what it is, he says 'four'. He also recognises and can point out all his colours, but can only say green, blue and yellow. He gets around this by pointing at the colour that he can't say, says 'blue' and shakes his head i.e. 'It's NOT blue'.

janh · 25/09/2003 14:33

God, this thread is so sweet, makes me want one again. (Well, almost! )

Well done to all your little ones.

kmg1 · 25/09/2003 14:37

DS2 just started school, and has a choice for school dinner. Every day he has always chosen 'proper veg' - cauli, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, etc. over beans or spaghetti. AND yesterday he chose an apple rather than an iced bun or a doughnut for dessert ...!

aloha · 25/09/2003 15:12

My ds knew all his colours before he was two. He just 24months and is worryingly interested in the colour of other people's clothes - 'Nicky got blue top. Want purple socks on'. He also insists we draw him picures of, say, an armadillo or porcupine in all colours - eg 'Mama, draw green porcupine. Draw pink porcupine'. He's rubbish at kicking balls and not interested in toy cars. Hmmm....I think dh's dreams of his son playing for Leeds are going out of the window, somewhat!

eidsvold · 25/09/2003 18:41

dd has had two firsts in two days - yesterday at nursery pulled herself up from sitting in the chair to standing up. Today when we left nursery she actually waved at the nursery nurses which was so cute.

fio2 · 25/09/2003 18:42

awww how cute eidsvold, shes doing really well

florenceuk · 26/09/2003 10:11

It's so exciting when they start really talking and communicating, isn't it! Aloha, your son sounds lovely, and VERY advanced in his language skills. DS is a couple of months younger - his vocabulary has just exploded over the past few weeks, but he has only just started saying sentences, eg "want x" rather than just "x" - and on Sunday he said to DH re some washing "I give dem mummy?"
