DH and I have been trying to teach our almost 14mo DD about animals, namely what noises they make.

She got the hang of meiow (prob as we have 2 cats) but had real probs with any of the others, she'd just look at us blankly and then shout 'MEIOW!' no matter which animal we pointed at in the book. We took her to a stately home when we were on holiday and they have pigs. She excitedly shouted 'MEIOW' when she spotted them ! This has now become a bit of a recurring theme chez WSM.

However, DD just pulled DS2's DVD stacking unit over and picked up Scooby Doo. She pointed at Scooby and shouted 'Doggy !', closely followed by 'Oof !'. AT LAST !!!!!! Of course I now have to clear up all the blinkin' DVDs on the floor

My baby is 7 today and I'm so proud of her because she's the kindest, sweetest, nicest girl ever! She had a big party for her friends at home yesterday with a magician and was so lovely to all her guests. I can't believe how grown up she is, she's left me far behind with everything she knows now ( she's far better at maths already than I have ever been ) and she plays the piano (I can't. Just wanted to sing her praises today!

Ailsa · 19/01/2004 23:01

Happy Birthday to your baby Cam. My middle baby will be 7 in July.

Cam · 20/01/2004 11:13

Thanks Ailsa and congratulations to your dd1 for getting the popular vote (is she a budding politician?)

lailag · 20/01/2004 11:18

dd (9mo) took a few steps on her own this weekend. Feel a bit sad as I am realising she isn't a "little" baby anymore

aloha · 20/01/2004 11:36

My ds pointed to the picture of Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover of Glamour yesterday, and said, "It's mummy. That's my mummy! It's a mummy book.". That's what I call a good boy!

BTW: No, sadly I do not look like Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover of Glamour.

ThomCat · 20/01/2004 11:51

i love this thread - well done EVERYONE.

Aloha -

Lovely stories everyone. Ds is finally getting the hang of the toilet and is very proud to be doing wees standing up. After a nightmare with the whole thing, it's made him (and me) feel so much better.

Aloha - brilliant! What a clever chap recognising his beautiful mummy. I had a similar thing - a cafe I go to has two posters on the wall, one of Sean Connery and one of Audrey Hepburn. Once, ds pointed to Sean and said, "That's my Daddy", so I pointed to Audrey and said (hopefully) "And is that Mummy?" Ds looked at me like I had lost my mind and said "No". BTW, obviously I don't look like Audrey Hepburn (look like I swallowed Audrey Hepburn maybe), but then dh does not look like Sean Connery either. No fair.

Cam - happy birthday to your dd. A flair for maths and a flair for music often go together, don't they?

Lovely stories here everyone!

I've been taking about half an hour a week to introduce ds (3 in May) to letters as he's really into books and constantly pointing to words asking me what it says. That probably makes me a horribly pushy parent

However, this morning we were going through the Jolly Phonics video and book and he recognised the letters S A and T immediately and I'm so proud of him He gets really excited and can't wait to watch the Inky programme and read the book afterwards! I just can't help getting enthusiastic along with him.

Bozza · 04/02/2004 10:03

I'm like that too Georgina. I get excited back and then DS beams and its so lovely. I'm thinking of getting the Jolly Phonics as well because my DS is just like you describe yours.

Bozza · 04/02/2004 10:04

Ooops should have added - well done to your DS.

GeorginaA · 04/02/2004 10:56

Ta Jolly Phonics isn't cheap, I have to admit - but I was a bit paranoid that I didn't teach him anything "wrong" that might set him back at nursery/school. At least I know I'm likely to be showing him the same things.

It seems approachable from lots of different levels so should last well. He really enjoys it and I don't regret spending the money at all.

I just find it so exciting because I adore reading and it's something I've always wanted to be able to share with my kids. It's just so amazing that he's excited too

My dd2, 3 3/4 swam half a width yesterday all by herself!!! I was so chuffed but most of all she was really proud of herself.

lou33 · 04/02/2004 23:02

I know she is almost 12, but I am v proud of dd1, who today came home with her first secondary school report, all A's and B's !

Hulababy · 05/02/2004 09:21

I have to sing the praises of DD now 21 months. Last night she did her puzzle - naming all the pieces 'dog, cat, fussh (fish), pone, bear etc' as she tried to slot them in. She was so pleased with herself 'I doned it, I doned it' jumping around and clapping. What a complete treasure she is.
And yesterday the little mite lay down on the sofa and said 'Drops in eyes' because she knew she had to have eye drops even though she hates it.

well done batters' dd!

Cam · 06/02/2004 10:18

It's so nice when they get rewarded at school for working hard isn't it? Congratulations to your dd Batters!

miggy · 10/02/2004 14:52

Sorry, so thrilled had to have a quick rave here as cant rave in real world for fear of bragging, except to grandparents. Got Ds2 scholarship result in post just now and he has won one. Sooo pleased for him because his brother is really in your face sort of clever-scholarship/moved up a yr etc. DS2 wanted to do test because some of his friends were doing it but I have been on tenterhooks for last 3 weeks waiting for results because I was so worried he wouldnt get one and DS1 would never let him forget it. Not boasting just jumping up and down excited and no one to tell

Kayleigh · 10/02/2004 14:55

miggy, congratulations to your ds2. You must be very proud.
