DH and I have been trying to teach our almost 14mo DD about animals, namely what noises they make.

She got the hang of meiow (prob as we have 2 cats) but had real probs with any of the others, she'd just look at us blankly and then shout 'MEIOW!' no matter which animal we pointed at in the book. We took her to a stately home when we were on holiday and they have pigs. She excitedly shouted 'MEIOW' when she spotted them ! This has now become a bit of a recurring theme chez WSM.

However, DD just pulled DS2's DVD stacking unit over and picked up Scooby Doo. She pointed at Scooby and shouted 'Doggy !', closely followed by 'Oof !'. AT LAST !!!!!! Of course I now have to clear up all the blinkin' DVDs on the floor

Aw Bron, it's lovely when they do something for others isn't it? My ds is such a soppy boy,
I just love him to bits. Mind you, re: the international footballer bit, he said, "want to read a magazine" the other day. Where's that testosterone surge I keep reading about?!

Some time ago a friend of mine pointed out that we spend the first two years teaching a child to walk and talk, then the rest of their lives saying "Sit down and Shutup"

Welshmum · 26/09/2003 19:14

DD (17 months) has taken to her hands on either side of my face and pulling me towards her and giving me a big kiss. Needless to say I think this is fan-tas-tic. Her favourite word at the moment is keys - but she just keeps on saying new ones every day. Dh asked her if she wanted to go to the zoo today and he swears that she said 'yesssss, gorilla.......'

bobsmum · 26/09/2003 19:20

ds turned 1 a couple of weeks ago and on his first birthday surrounded by balloons he said "bwoon!" That's since become "boon" despite much repetition and goodness knows how many stories and pictures of BALLoons. Now they've all finally burst, he crawls around the lounge looking all folorn saying "boon, boon, boon" in a little whispery voice. Bizarre choice for a first word, I was hoping for "mummy', although dh swears blind he's been getting "daddy" for the last month or so....hmm

eidsvold · 26/09/2003 20:33

bobsmum - I would remind him of that when you little one needs a very smelly nappy changed

jasper · 26/09/2003 21:23

easy that is so true

mammya · 26/09/2003 21:57

Aloha, my dd was the same at that age with colour, wanting everything drawn in every colour!

aloha · 26/09/2003 22:41

mammya, I have to admit, I was flummoxed by having to draw a porcupine! it's lucky they just think you're so fab, isn't it, as opposed to a teenager, who'd just sneer at your purple porcupine...

Beetroot, they sound like a credit to you. It is lovely when they do their very best because they know something is important to you. Hope the funeral was okay and that your friend got the wonderful service she deserved.

fio2 · 30/10/2003 09:31

that is something to be proud of beetroot

alibubbles · 30/10/2003 10:03

beetroot, how proud you must be, it bought a lump to my throat as I could identify with you and reminded me of my DD when she said the poem " I did not die" at her great grandmothers funeral. I bet there wasn't a dry eye to be seen.

It is a great feeling to be proud of one's children.

janh · 30/10/2003 11:47

That's lovely, beetroot. Another good memory to help console you.

Well done to your children beetroot, you must have been terribly proud.

Rhubarb · 30/10/2003 14:24

Oh Beetroot, I have been reading the other thread but for once I simply didn't know what to say to you! I think you have been so strong and handled this so well. You are a credit to your friend and to your children. The fact that they were little angels at the ceremony is no doubt due to your influence, your calmness and positive attitude have helped them and will continue to be a source of inspiration to them when they face the big world out there. Now when they look back on this time they will remember it for the respect, strength and courage that was shown.

tigermoth · 30/10/2003 19:00

So glad your children did you credit on this important day. The joy of hearing your ds1 sing so perfectly must have struck a stong contrast with the pain of losing your friend.

MUM2ELA · 30/11/2003 16:34

Just wanted to share with everone how proud I am of my DD (nearly 15 months)cos last night she moved from sleeping in a cot to a 'big girls bed'!

She didn't fall out once and it only took half an hour of her getting out and back in before she realised she was meant to sleep in it!

Proud mummy!

CountessDracula · 30/11/2003 17:29

Wow Mum2Ela, amazing, I wouldn't put my 15 month old in a bed (don't know why, it would just feel weird) Wonder if I should try it! What a grown up girl!

I was v proud of my nearly 15 month old dd who tottered about 200 yards across a common, up to a rugby ball and kicked it perfectly - she got a huge round of applause - obv sitting with Daddy watchine rugby has paid off!

Karen99 · 30/11/2003 17:41

Such a 'big girl'! It must be so exciting for her.

dot1 · 01/12/2003 12:58

ds, who's 2 at the weekend, didn't say a word until he was 17 months, but has recently had a word explosion! He's obsessed with colours and describes everything by it's colour, e.g. "purple car", "red train" etc. - he knows loads of colours and I'm hugely impressed he knows the difference between red, pink and purple!! He can also count up to 6, but anything that's more than 1 automatically = 2!! The other day he was in the kitchen, went over to the cutlery and said "2 fish slices!" - whilst holding 2 fish slices!!! dp and I nearly fell over..!!

So brilliant - I love this stage!!!!

Demented · 01/12/2003 20:47

My DS1 (almost 5) splattered yoghurt down the side of the bin and turn round, looked at me and said "Oh, sorry Mummy" and he really sounded like he meant it.

DS2 (18 months) stood beside DS1 whilst DS1 went to the toilet today, he shouted "Daddy" then pretended to pull his trousers (although he was wearing a babygro) down and pretended he was going for a pee beside DS1, very cute.

Demented · 02/12/2003 15:18

My DS2 (18 months) watched a whole episode (usually just dances his way through the intro then loses interest) of the Teletubbies this morning, shouting "Laa Laa", dancing, shouting "Wow" at the helicopter and the big ship, making his hands go round and round every time he saw the helicopter blades rotating and shrieking loudly along with the baby in the sun. He had a great time!
