angelic and attractive-looking thirteen year old called Beau. He went to same prep school as me and was very well-off and popular. The name suited him down to the ground and worked within the circles he and his family moved in. Not sure if it would be as impressive on a less good-looking boy in a more, um, down-to-earth upbringing.

Hmm, not sure what happened to my first sentence. I meant to say:

I had my first crush on an angelic and attractive-looking thirteen year old called Beau. He went to same prep school as me and was very well-off and popular. The name suited him down to the ground and worked within the circles he and his family moved in. Not sure if it would be as impressive on a less good-looking boy in a more, um, down-to-earth upbringing.

I should probably add that I was eleven and that may have coloured my impression him (and his name)!

wigglybeezer · 24/04/2010 20:56

I used to look after a little boy called Beau (short for Beauregarde), his sister was Called Esmeralda. Their mother was a Southern Belle transplanted to Edinburgh, the names suited their surname and unusual family but wouldn't work for a more ordinary family IMO.

They'll be grown-up now, I wonder what they are up to?

ItalyLovingMummy · 24/04/2010 20:59

DH and I were in the supermarket the other day and a footballers wives type woman was saying 'Kanye, Kanye, no you can't have no more of them' to her little boy - lovely....

verybusyspider · 24/04/2010 21:08

the only Beau I know is my cousins little boy and he's gorgeous

you should know by now that most MN's only like 'thomas tank engine' tradional names!

CinderellaRach · 24/04/2010 21:19

Well can't say I like Kanyealthough don't see the connection with commenting on thread about the name Beau?!
Completely understand people thinking 'get over yourself love' that's why I asked..wanted to know what peoples true opinions are.
Thanks again for honest opinions

quite sweet for a bouncy 18 month old
pretty appalling for a bald, plump 48 year old.
If you do like it give him an optional middle name

lisaleelu · 24/04/2010 22:35

Asking to be bullied!

Surprise · 24/04/2010 22:43

Yes.

gottasmile · 24/04/2010 23:21

or a cat's - my mum had a cat called Beau!!

gottasmile · 24/04/2010 23:23

that was supposed to be added to "it's a dog's name". I meant to say or it can be a cat's name...

commeuneimage · 25/04/2010 00:47

no one seems to have mentioned Beau Brummell. Another bad precedent

seeker · 25/04/2010 01:11

"As a little boy it did seem a bit pretentious but he did go to a posh school so it might not have stuck out so much."

I think it would stick out a very long way indeed in a posh school!

ItalyLovingMummy · 25/04/2010 09:35

CinderellaRach - I forgot to add on my comment, there are worse names than Beau, Beau is quite sweet and I think it is a 'real' name. Like another poster says, depends very much on the child and the family to how certain names can be gotten away with!

lisianthus · 25/04/2010 12:53

I am loving expat's posts. My parent's dog is named Bo (or Beau - not sure how they have spelled it as have never seen it in writing). It's a very nice dog though - not at all a redneck.

laughinglil · 25/04/2010 13:23

I really like the name. My husband absolutly loves the name thats why my daughter is Isla Bo. However I just couldn't have it as a first name . I just didn't love it enough for that. This way she can choose to use it or not .
If you love the name , whatever anyone says nothing will put you off.. If you have any doubts or if someone can put you off you don't love it as much as you think.
I had very funny looks when I said I liked Isla..people thought it was made up but I love it and nothing put me off of it.

itsonlyaphase · 25/04/2010 13:31

I love it... Beau Young a famous and very goreous ex world champion longboard surfer...

donttrythisathome · 25/04/2010 13:50

It is a fab name.

If you like it go for it.

As for bullying...well so many people have unusual names these days. And anyway who cares what people think. personally I hate names like Hannah and James - but it would be crazy if someone didn't call their kid those names just because some people didn't like them IYSWIM.

Whoops...

CinderellaRach · 25/04/2010 18:29

The more I see this thread the more Beau grows on me...

I think I would only have it as a middle name/nickname personally.

Quattrocento · 25/04/2010 18:40

Beau for a girl is frankly ridiculous. Labels her terribly

Beau for a boy? Well, erm, it's a bit silly

expatinscotland · 25/04/2010 18:49

Beau for a girl = stripper/tit 'glamour' model.

CinderellaRach · 25/04/2010 19:00

I'm expecting a boy!Don't think I'd consider it if I was having a girl as there are so many beautiful girl names out there.Plus Beau should be masculine meaning.
Some people have mentioned on here that it isn't a proper name.I know it is a proper name but maybe it doesn't sound as 'normal' as a regular name....
