Naomi, Sarah or Ruth

I like biblical names but don't want to make my daughter hate her name. What do you think of these? Which do you prefer? What do the names make you think of? Do you know any children with these names - what are they like?

Any opinions really...be honest!

I really like them all. My favourite is Ruth, I think its a really pretty name and would use it myself but I sometimes struggle to pronounce "th" so have ruled out names with this sound.

Sarah I really like, I have a niece called Sarah who is lovely. It seemed to be a really popular name when I was growing up, but you don't hear of so many Sarahs now, which is a shame I think.

Naomi's my least favourite from your list, but still really like it. Again, I only know older Naomis but to me it does sound the most "modern" name on your list for some reason.

I know a Naomi very well, she is a late teen and likes her name alot.

Sarah would be my choice.

What about

Lydia?

Elizabeth?

Mary?

GreatGooglyMoogly · 16/04/2010 10:11

Sarah

greensnail · 16/04/2010 10:11

Or what about Leah?

SillyTillyBilly · 16/04/2010 10:18

Generally I would prefer Old Testament names. I also like Rebecca and Rachel but these three are the only ones we agree on having been through long lists!

Out of your list, I like Sarah best, although it is a little bit middle-of-the-road.

Not so keen on Ruth (it is too middle-aged for me, even though it might be about to go through a revival).

Naomi - neither like nor dislike.

I really like Rebecca and Rachel.

ozmetric · 16/04/2010 10:53

I like all of them

Plink · 16/04/2010 10:55

I don't mind the other two but not Ruth. Reminds me of the Jasper Carrot sketch when he's talking about being sick and at the end the only sound that will come out is ruuuuuth. Sorry!

MrsJohnDeere · 16/04/2010 10:56

Ruth

Ineedsomesleep · 16/04/2010 10:57

Only like Sarah. Not much for the name Ruth as I've always thought it sounded a bit harsh. There again, both the Ruths I know are fab.

Never liked the name Naomi sorry.

Have you thought of Jezebel?

happymum2010 · 16/04/2010 10:58

defenetly not Ruth

WorzselMummage · 16/04/2010 10:58

Sarah is by far the nicest.

Naomi is ok but don't like Ruth at all.

Bicnod · 16/04/2010 11:59

Sarah

inveteratenamechanger · 16/04/2010 12:00

I like them all, but LOVE Sarah.

going · 16/04/2010 12:00

Naomi and Sarah are pleasent names. I find Ruth harsh and not at all pretty.

CuppaTeaJanice · 16/04/2010 12:03

Ruth is my middle name and I've always disliked it, it just sounds so prim.

Sarah - it's a nice name, but was so overused in the 1970s that when your daughter is in her 20s, she'll have a 'middle aged' name. A bit like a young woman being called 'Val' or 'Janet' now. It just sounds odd.

I really like Naomi. I like the way the letters look together, and it's a beautiful sound. Also not too popular, but not so unusual that people will get confused with spellings etc.

DebiNewberry · 16/04/2010 12:32

Ruth. Is pretty, nice nickname potential, cool and quite quirky too.

Poohbearsmom · 16/04/2010 12:43

Sarah is timeless & love Rachel & Rebecca too! Ozmetric gave a great list i really love the names Grace & Eve

Goingspare · 16/04/2010 12:46

I have a Sarah and might have had a Ruth if my husband liked my friend Ruth as much as I do!

jellybeans · 16/04/2010 14:53

Sarah is the nicest.

Naomi is ok, don't like Ruth, too old/plain/unpretty and 'roof' like.

Haliborange · 16/04/2010 15:00

I like Naomi, but not when it is pronounced Nay-oh-mi.

Also I think Sarah is much underused these days.
