Naomi, Sarah or Ruth

I like biblical names but don't want to make my daughter hate her name. What do you think of these? Which do you prefer? What do the names make you think of? Do you know any children with these names - what are they like?

Any opinions really...be honest!

Sarah I love - and the meaning 'princess' is also great to find out as you grow up :-)

Naomi and Ruth I am not so keen on but that's because of people I've known with the names so biased for me.

beanlet · 16/04/2010 16:12

Ruth is my mother's name, so I'm rather fond of it (though she did get called "ruthless" all the way through school, poor thing!). Virtually no-one is called Ruth anymore though -- so it would fit the criteria of a classic name that's now unusual, if that were something you were going for. Nice character in the Bible story too.

I've always thought Sarah is a bit boring, but quite like Naomi.

violethill · 16/04/2010 18:34

Ruth.

All good though

janeite · 16/04/2010 18:37

Naomi is my favourite - pretty and I like the look of it on the page too, if that makes sense?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 16/04/2010 18:42

Sarah is my favourite, of yours

I also like Leah, and Lydia

Also, Hannah

Jamieandhismagictorch · 16/04/2010 18:44

Rebecca (or Rebekah ?), and Miriam also lovely

I don't think that Sarah is as dated as other 1970s names. It's more of a classic than that

SillyTillyBilly · 16/04/2010 19:16

Gosh - no real clear winner then. Pretty mixed opinions...

Haliborange - how would you pronounce Naomi?

LittleSilver · 16/04/2010 19:24

Jael?

Goingspare · 16/04/2010 19:38

That's a funny way to pronounce Naomi.

trumpton · 16/04/2010 19:46

My mother was Nay-Oh-mee. Spelt Naomi but a scottish friend has a daughter and pronounces her name Nigh-Oh-mee (first syllable rhymes with Sigh)
A vote for Naomi.

Surprise · 16/04/2010 20:06

Ruth.

Haliborange · 16/04/2010 20:10

The two I have met recently both pronounce it ... hum, hard to write, but it comes out sort of "Nair-mi". So without that quite heavy 'y'. That probably makes bugger all sense, but it is nice, honest.
And I prefer it to the Nay-oh-mi version.

Haliborange · 16/04/2010 20:18

Perhaps it's a little like Mayo-mi.

But anyway, I don't like so much the estuary Nay-yo-mi

nbee84 · 16/04/2010 20:51

I look after a 6 year old Naomi - we say neigh o me (much like your nayo-mi I think) , but blended together rather than 3 seperate sounds.

Haven't heard Nair-mi and I cringe inside when people say nigh-o-mi, and 6 year old will actually correct them.

lovechoc · 16/04/2010 20:57

I like Ruth

Remotew · 16/04/2010 21:25

The reason I like Naomi is because it's from the bible, means pleasant and sounds modern. Classic.

LynetteScavo · 16/04/2010 21:26

Naomi was on my girls list....but now I like Ruth the best.

ilovepiccolina · 16/04/2010 21:31

I don't like Ruth, again because of 'roof'. Naomi - not really. Sarah is nice.

But I would go for something more unusual. My favourites are Rebekah & Tabitha. There are loads of really gorgeous names in the Bible, imho, though more for boys.

Jael is lovely but beware that she is the one who killed someone with a tent peg IIRC.

Jenbot · 16/04/2010 22:01

Sarah

dinkystinky · 16/04/2010 22:03

Naomi - is one of my absolutely most favourite girl names. Distinctive and beautiful.

nbee84 · 16/04/2010 22:44

Jael is usually Yael and yes, she killed with a tent peg, but in doing so she freed Israel from King Jabin and became a heroine.

LittleSilver · 17/04/2010 07:27

See? What's not to like?

bubbles12 · 17/04/2010 08:51

Like all your choices but I love the Ruth the most.

ilovepiccolina · 18/04/2010 13:56

nbee - ah, I didn't know that.

I really like the name Jael!
