Yes, Bay Garnett, that's who I was thinking about.

Kirsty Allsop's son is called this. I quite like it for girl or boy though I don't usually approve of unisex names!

kailie · 02/05/2010 10:57

I have 3 boys - all bay

.... (horses that is) they are a very handsome colour, but not sure I'd use it for a girl's name.

persephoneplum · 02/05/2010 11:45

Bé was my dear departed nana's nickname. She was Audrey but it was actually short for 'baby' as she was the baby of the family.

I don't like Bay as a name in itself, but Bé as an affectionate nickname is beautiful to me. Obviously I have a good reason for this.

Rockbird · 02/05/2010 13:01

Bay? Absolutely horrible whether for a girl or boy. It's just a word not a name, sounds bleugh to me. Makes me think of leaves and not nice summery leaves, old wizened leaves in a stew.

Beegey · 02/05/2010 14:54

I like it. Very soft and feminine. I wouldn't go for sought after if I were you, just what ever you and dh like.

missmoopy · 02/05/2010 14:56

Its a non name - a bit blah and boring. Sorry.

TiggyR · 02/05/2010 21:25

Isn't if funny the different connotations names have to different people? Bay is a herb/shrub/plant just like Hebe, Rosemary, Saffron, Daphne, Lily, Iris, or any number of names which are otherwise perfectly acceptable. Yet Bay reminds people of horses and bay windows?! Since when did anyone say the name Rose made them think of watering cans, shower heads, and ceiling plaster mouldings?!

I think the rule when asking for opinions should be that everyone has to say their own DC's names when offering an opinion on your choices. In order to make a reasoned judgment on whether your choice is a bit too left-field for your its own good, you need to know whether you are asking loony eecentrics, trail-blazing trend-setters, boring tradionalists, or fashion-followers and band-wagon jumpers who need to hear something a hundred times before it becomes acceptable. Asking yourself how you feel about their child's name will help you know where you are!

Jenbot · 02/05/2010 22:17

Hmm, I think it's a name that she'd have to be very careful where she lived.
Bay in many accents in the UK would sound weird/wrong I fear.

Rockbird · 02/05/2010 22:21

That doesn't follow at all Tiggy. I'm not asking for an opinion on dd's name but the op is. If you dont want to be told that your name choice sucks then don't ask a group of random strangers. There are enough nutters on this thread who like the word Bay to suggest the op is getting a mix of people responding.

VengefulKitty · 02/05/2010 22:23

Sorry. Reminds me of a donkey/horse.

Tenalady · 02/05/2010 22:27

Sorry but immediatly thought of ebay.
You choose what you think is right for you. The problem will always be that a lot will like and just as many will not. Rarely will you get a resounding yes.

I chose to ignore my family when they didnt like my Son's name.

KermitTheFrog · 02/05/2010 22:34

I think it's quite nice.

what is this old thread alert stuff?

flopsy1974 · 07/05/2010 13:55

Rare, but definately not pretty.
Don't do it.

LuluF · 07/05/2010 18:49

TiggyR - I think you talk a lot of sense. I think many people are incredibly undiplomatic, but would they be so willing if they thought their own choices would be criticised? I even find from reading some of posts that people offer their opinions (rather unkind they are, too) even when they are not actually being asked for them.

I think it's your baby - if you like a name you should go for and take anything that anyone says (here or elsewhere) with a pinch of salt.

seashore · 07/05/2010 19:00

It's just too weak. Awful.

Maybe Kirsty can get away with it but maybe her ds will hop onto his middle name, whatever that is, once he is older.

Actually I can see Kirsty getting away with it. Are you as super confident as her?

SweetnessAndShite · 07/05/2010 19:05

eBay?

seashore · 07/05/2010 19:08

I just googled, Kirsty's ds is called Bay Atlas, I don't know, it's starting to grow on me.

Least it's not Jack. OP I'm just not sure it works so well for a girl.
