I would only throw a name to MN if i wanted put off it tbh.

Any name i actually like would be kept completely to myself.

birdofthenorth · 04/03/2010 16:52

I quite like Bay. Many years ago before it became hugely derided as a 'chav' name I loved the idea of Bayley for a girl, with the y spelling, which was nicely reminicent of both Bay trees and coastal loveliness, eg 'sitting on the dock of the'....

CarmenSanDiego · 04/03/2010 16:53

I like Bay Reminds me of bay leaves, which is a nice thing! Have also heard Sage used as a name.

MN hate everything that isn't 'classical'

fillybuster · 04/03/2010 16:53

Does rather put me in mind of horses, windows, cooking and trees, but not as bad as some. Wouldn't get laughed at in school as much as, ummm, ok, it might.

Think I prefer Laurel if you're channeling trees, Sash if you're thinking windows and Dun if it has to be a horse colour . OK, probably not the latter...

Pofacedagain · 04/03/2010 16:57

It reminds me of baying for blood actually. Sorry. But guess it is better when you know somebody with the name. Laurel nice though I think of Stan.

RubiMama · 04/03/2010 17:04

Exactly! Bay trees and leaves and the Dock of the Bay all nice associations.
There does seem to be a general consensus on MN for rather more boring classical names I reckon.

I'm not sure if it is a consensus for classical names so much as a reaction against made up names

MillyMollyMoo · 04/03/2010 17:09

No

fanjolina · 04/03/2010 17:12

Baby

GibbonInARibbon · 04/03/2010 17:15

Bay = horse to me.

Gold help her if she has unfortunate teeth,

GibbonInARibbon · 04/03/2010 17:17

Dun, that's another colour for a horse.

Or you could go for the more exotic Palomino.

CarmenSanDiego · 04/03/2010 17:20

Hrm. But she didn't make it up. A cursory google suggests it's been common on Babycentre for girls since their records began in the mid-90s and I'm pretty sure it's been used long before then.

I don't understand this 'made-up name' thing. Surely at some point in history, someone said 'Ah, I'm going to make up the name Jane' and thus, Jane became a name. The only difference is age.

Maybe a name has to stand the test of time and be trialled by lots of other people before it's good enough for the average boring Mumsnetter.

rainfatclouds · 04/03/2010 17:23

Bay

Is Okay

GibbonInARibbon · 04/03/2010 17:25

Sorry but any name that is a colour of a horse is out for me, test of time or not.

JoCoolBeans · 04/03/2010 17:39

Bayley reminds me of my favourite drink.
Sage reminds me of one of the two leprechauns on Live and Kicking (BBC) "Sage and Onion"

Bay would grow on me too i think. (I'm not a horsey person so i wouldn't have made that association anyway)

If i ever have another little girl i'd love to call her Elsie.

Elsie is a wonderful name and not that common where i'm from.

RubiMama · 04/03/2010 17:44

ok, bad teeth would be a bad thing, but there's no horsey genes amongst us!

Agree that people started making up names at some point. Ruby, Lavender, Rose, Lily, Pearl were all faddy Victorian inventions at one point and they ended up becoming standardly used names over time. And didn't Wendy actually come from Peter Pan and have no precedent?

Anyway, re: Bay, I didn't invent it!

I dont think you have OP, back tothe drawing board,

MamaVoo · 04/03/2010 17:48

I don't mind Bay. I prefer Skye, which seems to me the same 'sort' of name but more recognisable as a girl's name IYKWIM.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 04/03/2010 17:51

Bay... makes me think of parking bay....

Shitemum · 04/03/2010 17:52

Bay....Watch

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 04/03/2010 17:57

I've only heard it used by Kirsty Allsop for her son

Other than that, it's as others have said - Bay Watch, parking bay, bay horse, bay leaf etc. Sorry!

thisisyesterday · 04/03/2010 17:57

I thought Bay was a boy's name? Kirstie Allsop's son is Bay isn't he?

paisleyleaf · 04/03/2010 17:57

My DH would love to name a baby after the VW campervan.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/03/2010 17:58

Makes me think of Morecombe.

thisisyesterday · 04/03/2010 18:00

if you and your partner LOVE it, then you should use it, regardless of what a load of people on the internet think. it's your child after all.

Buster is a bloody excellent name
