I really really like Katie-Morag, but can't have Katie

So, what goes with Morag? I like Morag as either 1st or 2nd name.

We are scots and like scottish names... suggestions please!

Morag the Toerag.

Says it all really.

Please, don't name your baby this.

sandripples · 11/02/2010 15:26

Jeannie-Morag?

Agnes-Morag?

Cathy-Morag?

Winnie-Morag?

Dorothea-Morag?

Sorry - thinking of all my Scottish relations' names!

I like Morag on its own - great name!

sunchild77 · 11/02/2010 15:26

I think Morag sounds awful. Not at all pretty.Sorry!

Pingpong · 11/02/2010 16:34

I like the Katie-Morag books but wouldn't call my daughter Morag. I don't think of it as a pretty name - sorry.
What about Elspeth, Ailsa, Eilidh, Mairi, Marsali, Shona, Rhona, Catriona?
Actually Catriona Morag sounds okay together as a first and second name.

mummyloveslucy · 11/02/2010 16:35

Eew, I'm not keen on this name at all. Sorry.

Eglu · 11/02/2010 16:43

I don't think Morag is a pretty name at all. THere are much nicer Scottish names you could use. I think it sounds terribly old fashioned. YOu might as well call her Senga!!

BessieBoots · 11/02/2010 16:49

Oooooh but I like Morag! It's a very warm name. I think Cathie is nice with it. What about Eilidh Morag?Or Maggie! Maggie Morag, that is an excellent name.

I like Morag so much, I think I'd put that first. What about Morag Ellen?

Nellie Morag!

(Could be here all night. Am now smitten with the name Morag.)

shumway · 11/02/2010 16:51

I think Morag from Home and Away. No one else? Oh, I'll get my coat.

Ziggurat · 11/02/2010 17:38

Don't do it. Please - don't do it.

My family is inundated with Scottish names, but nobody has been cruel enough to saddle a girl with Morag.

Out of the zillions and trillions of girl's names on the planet, you honestly think Morag is the prettiest and the best??

DON'T DO IT.

arsesandoldlace · 11/02/2010 17:45

What Ziggurat said.

Ugly name, sorry. Sounds like a witch's name.

mathanxiety · 11/02/2010 17:50

Yes, it is a truly horrible name.

Chaotica · 11/02/2010 17:51

I like it in context (ie if you live in scotland) but as is obvious many people don't. I had a great friend who survived being called it though (don't think it occurred to her that there was a problem, but then she didn't go to England until she was about 19).

sunchild77 · 11/02/2010 17:54

Last time I posted here I said I really like Flora, and everybody hated that.... honestly I can't win.... But, I do want honest opinions!

Just so fed up with the usual scottish suggestions... I have an Isla already, so anything too similar is out...

Thanks Bessie for being helpful!

I like it and I know quite a few Morags in their teens/early 20s (used to live in the wild north), so I think of it as a name for any age. I taught a Katie-Morag a few years back.

What about the Gaelic - Muirneag? Or Marsali, I love that and know a couple of little ones (under 6) as well as one of the most amazing nurses I know - I think of it as a really strong name!

lovechoc · 11/02/2010 17:58

Not keen on the name Morag and I'm Scottish too. There are worse names though!!

Pingpong · 11/02/2010 18:15

Much prefer Flora to Morag.
I love Isla and think it is really pretty so Morag beside Isla is quite harsh sounding.
And you've got 2 votes for Marsali now.

yama · 11/02/2010 18:57

I remember moving from the West Coast to the East Coast of Scotland in my teens and being when one of the girls in my class was called Morag.

I felt sorry for her being saddled with such an old fashioned name.

Mind you now that old fashioned is in ...

nannyj · 11/02/2010 19:03

I think of Morag in Home and Away too!

expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 19:05

it's an ugly-sounding name. fug, in fact.

i third marsali.

yama · 11/02/2010 19:17

Was Morag one of Alf's sisters?

sunchild77 · 11/02/2010 19:24

Yama ~ yeah she was... the red haired miserably one..LOL

Ive never heard of Marsali before..... Maybe it will grow on me.... sounds like an alcoholic drink...

Any thoughts on a middle name?

Its Marsali -??- Mac something

Expat ~ I quite like Morven too... Do you hate that as well??

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 19:29

Morven is lovely! There's a Morven in DD2's nursery class.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 19:30

If DS had been a girl he'd have been a Muireann.

Instead, he's a Struan.
