I really really like Katie-Morag, but can't have Katie

So, what goes with Morag? I like Morag as either 1st or 2nd name.

We are scots and like scottish names... suggestions please!

WTF is wrong with Morag? It's a perfectly normal name and I know a few of all ages. Nothing wrong with it at all Sunchild, and if you like it you should use it

LowLevelWhingeing · 11/02/2010 19:33

Now I have a lovely Aunty Morag so I do like the name, but it sounds much nicer in her accent (Scottish) than in mine (NW England). In fact it sounds horrible when I say it.

GhoulsAreLoud · 11/02/2010 19:35

I had a friend at school called Morag. She was such a beautiful, lovely person.

I always thought it was awful that she was saddled with such a hideous name, it didn't suit her at all.

Sorry.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/02/2010 19:37

I'm also Scottish and the only girl at my school was entirely bullied - I never once heard her being called Morag, only Toerag.

It was awful - please don't.

Morven is lovely, what about Mhairi? Rowenna?

Pingpong · 11/02/2010 19:44

yes thumbs up for Morven too.
IIRC Marsali is the gaelic for Marjorie but happy to be corrected if I've got that wrong.

EsmeWeatherwax · 11/02/2010 19:47

I love the name Morag, its one of my favourites! Morven is gorgeous too...I was all for calling dd2 Morag, but dh vetoed. Git.

BessieBoots · 11/02/2010 19:47

Got these off a Scottisah name website, some are anglicizations of Scottish names:

Bethia-OMG how lovely is THAT? Never heard it before.
Eithne
Maeve
Merna
Sorcha
Una.

As I said, I LOVE Morag... Particularly as Mor means Sea in Gaelic (Scottish and Welsh)

Pingpong · 11/02/2010 19:55

Eithne was St Columba's mother's name so makes me think Irish not Scottish, never heard of Bethia, Maeve definitely makes me think Irish and Sorcha too. Never heard of Merna. And Una mmmm not sure.

I thought Mor meant BIG as in Ben Mor - big hill

expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 19:57

There's nothing wrong with it, except that it's fugly.

Think of a beautiful, pink wean, totesy and warm as toast.

And calling that poor lassie Morag.

Also there's the terrible 'Mo' nickname.

BessieBoots · 11/02/2010 20:17

I like Mo.

I can hear it now, in the school yard, 'Mo the Ho!'

Kids can be cruel.

pointydog · 11/02/2010 20:33

I thought sea in gaelic was Mara? Which is much nicer than Morag.

Love Morven.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 20:36

I thought it was Mara, too.

It's a common part of the names of homes here (many have no number) because we are on a sea loch.

pointydog · 11/02/2010 20:36

I bet you have hunners of Tigh-na-Maras

Wonderstuff · 11/02/2010 20:36

I love Morag - a bit of a marmite name I think. I had a classmate who was a Morag at school, she was very cool and such an individual, the name suited her perfectly.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 20:37

Tons! And Alt Na Mara's, too, up on hills.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/02/2010 20:42

I actually like Morag
Went to school with a Morag and she was sporty and very cool. Don't see what there is to strongly dislike as some seem to.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2010 20:43

Listen to weegiemum! Her kids are in the Gaelic medium. Marsali

upahill · 11/02/2010 20:46

Sunchild77... Everyone says toerag!!!! (round my way anyway)

I loved Morag and that was my first choice but I never had girls

It's funny how if you know someone with a particular name it colours how you think of it. I thought Morag was a bit old fashioned but now that I know a lovely, lovely Morag (cool, beautiful, funny, kind etc) I think it is a great name.

love Mairi. Mhairi, Morven and Megan (which I think of as Scottish with no evidence whatsoever!)

RedLentil · 11/02/2010 20:54

Expat, dd2 would have been a Muireann if my neighbour and friend hadn't got in a year early. It is a lovely name.

migola · 11/02/2010 22:26

please don't. I was nearly called this and am SO glad I wasn't

mrswill · 11/02/2010 22:38

PMSL at Jam-rag, snort!!

Sunchild - theres nothing wrong with it, but it 'sounds' ugly, and is ripe with opportunity for bullying, lots of nasty nicknames can be put with 'rag'.

Flora is an absolutely gorgeous name btw and goes better with Isla.

Morag conjures up a gossipy old woman with curlers in for me, but if you love it, then Im sure your DD will grow into it
