I really really like Katie-Morag, but can't have Katie

So, what goes with Morag? I like Morag as either 1st or 2nd name.

We are scots and like scottish names... suggestions please!

Not overly keen, sorry. How about Mairi? My Great Aunt from Stornaway was called that and I've always thought it a lovely name.

TheLoyalShepherd · 13/02/2010 00:54

It's just number one on my top ten of hideous names - sorry. Just ugly imho.

Ziggurat · 13/02/2010 14:48

It's just a deeply unattractive name. Anything with the word 'rag' in it is never going to conjure up loveliness.

The point is - is this really the nicest / prettiest /best name out of all the girls' names on God's green earth that you can come up with? REALLY?

I mean I know not everyone wants a pretty name per se (I don't, myself), but why actively chose one that veers so wildly in the opposite direction.

Don't do it!!

thehillsarealive · 13/02/2010 19:05

there were a few morags in my year at secondary school, obviously a popular name circa mid 70's...

anyway, how about Mairaed (pn marAed) or Moira both M names and Scottish. Personally I dont like the name Moira but do like Mairaed. I have used the name Marissa for my daughters middle name it is a name inits own right but also a combination of Mary and Isabella - both my grand mothers names.

HTH

Piffpaffpoff · 13/02/2010 19:15

Morag was near the top of our list but 'Morag-the-toerag' just blew it for us!

Lorna?

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 13/02/2010 19:20

When there are so many lovely Scottish names, why on earth would you pick Morag? Surely it's up (down?) there with Senga...

And please don't make it worse by hyphenating it

Scotia · 13/02/2010 22:05

Piffpaffpoff - LOVE your name Are you a 'High Life' fan by any chance?

Piffpaffpoff · 13/02/2010 22:16

Oh yes! Love it, love it, love it! Could sing the whole song if pushed, and maybe even do the dance....(insert saddo icon here).

Piffpaffpoff · 13/02/2010 22:18

By that, I mean the Piff Paff Poff song, not the opening titles (although I could give that a good go as well).

Scotia · 13/02/2010 22:45

Yes I could just about do it too!

So do you get my name now?

''Scotia, Air Scotia''

''Oh darlin, that's shockin Shona!''

Scotia · 13/02/2010 22:46

Sorry for the hijack op

Albertine · 14/02/2010 07:01

I love it and I don't find it unattractive in the slightest. I think it's sweet and strong and ripe for revival. I'm from NE Scotland and knew a few growing up, but it's just dropped off the radar completely (none born in Scotland last year). I'd use it in a second, but I've been forbidden. And I agree that no-one says toerag these days!

I also love the suggestion of Marsaili, by the way - another of my favourites. Flora is gorgeous too, and the whole 'spreads easily' thing that people go on about is an advertising strapline that no-one in the next generation will ever have heard of. Ignore the naysayers! You have some lovely names here.

Ziggurat · 14/02/2010 09:47

"And I agree that no-one says toerag these days!"

That's probably because no-one's being called Morag these days!! Believe me - it'll be back with a bang if Morag is revived.

boodleboot · 14/02/2010 09:56

i just think it is a really ugly sounding name...

Piffpaffpoff · 14/02/2010 12:44

Yes Scotia, I realised that was where your name came from. As the company song went:

"Dinna fash yersel, dae it awfie well, Air Scotia is for me!"

I'm sure I have seen a Shona Spurtle on here too so there are a few of us around ha ha!

Anyway, here endeth the High Life Hijack....sorry OP!

expatinscotland · 14/02/2010 12:46

Yes, and those lovely names do not include Morag.

That's just so wrong.

NiceShoes · 14/02/2010 12:56

Sorry, don't like Morag.

Wolfblass · 14/02/2010 14:43

I much prefer Flora to Morag

How about Moira?

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 14/02/2010 15:09

"Toerag" is alive and well, actually!

avaj · 14/02/2010 15:58

No no no.............
My parents nearly called me Morag, and I am eternally gratefull that they changed their minds!
It is almost bareable said with a soft highland accent, but really bad said with most others.
Resist!

Lighteningbugs · 14/02/2010 16:31

I think Morag is a horrible name as was said before it has rag in it. It reminds me of grumpy old ladies in wolly hats. It also rhymes with hag and old bag

MaggieMaeve · 14/02/2010 22:41

I like it.

I think it's a more attractive sound than some of the names that are raved about these days, like Scarlett for example! SCAR lett. how is that nice? That's just an example, not to zone in on that one name. But Morag is a strong-sounding name. Its appeal is that it's strong and unusual.

I don't know a single Morag. So it seems glamorous to me!!
