I want to call my baby Jesus

because it's cute, but everyone has a problem with this :-s

Thoughts?

We're not religious or associate in any religious circles, I just like the name.

Fair enough meoww - I'm a humanist, so meaning is important to me, but I know we're all different. Don't have a problem with biblical names per se, but wouldn't have picked this one myself, probably because we still live in a world where the name Jesus will mean something very specific to the vast majority of people.

I think the point about it being used as a swear word was a powerful one too.

Are you thinking of home educating?

i think it's ridiculous to be offended by my son's name, but not offended if we happen to be hispanic as that's okay.. :-s
unless it says in the christian manual 'anyone who names their child jesus is a mortal enemy and they mean you harm' then i'm not ure i understand it.
Anyway i've heard that unreasonable and baffling veiw that it would 'offend' certain people, i'm considering other aspects now..

Actually I like the name. But it makes me think of the big Lebowski and giggle. Wonder why its totally normal to have this name in Spain but people in the UK are offended? Genuinely curious.

I was waking slowly up to the news this morning and they were talking about Madonna breaking up with her boyf Jesus. They kept pronouncing it Jee sus. Surely he is called Hey zooz?

It annoyed me so much I woke up.

I am not offended at the notion of you naming your child Jesus. But I do think it would make his life pretty complicated TBH.

Its like Adolf - as soon as anyone hears it they will only think of one person.

I called ds this when I was in labour but I changed it to something more normal once he was born .

Well I'm a practicing Christian and I wouldn't be offended, I'd just think you were a total numpty.

The only reason to pick this name is to chock or surprise people. If that's your agenda then go ahead, knock yourself out. Just don't pretend that's it because you like the name more than any other. I like the word 'table' - got a real good ring to it that has. I haven't called my child 'table' though!

Name him Sue and have done with it.

And I actually have an Uncle Jesus. He's from Spain.

As a matter of interest, would it be Ok for OP to name her baby "Jesus", if she pronounced it "HayZuz"? (He'd hardly be the only kid in school having to explain his name, after all.)

Yes, because she's in a different geographical and therefore cultural area.

I think it's rubbish that people find the name in itself offensive.
I can understand Christians finding it offensive that an Atheist would use the name because they think it's 'cute'.

In the UK, being called Jesus will mark him out as being seriously weird. As you have no strong reason other than it sounding nice, I think it would be cruel to give him that name.

What if it is a girl though? I nominate Frogmella - I think the same thinking would apply:

"At least my child would have an instant way of finding out who's an idiot and who's not, by how they react to his name.
If someone is going to laugh nastily or be offended by his name then they're probably not worth knowing, so at least he'd have that knowledge quickly
