because it's cute, but everyone has a problem with this :-s

Thoughts?

We're not religious or associate in any religious circles, I just like the name.

And that's the thing, isn't it. This is a person. Not your toy, not your dolly, not your property, but a person. Their own person. And you have a duty to them. And part of that is to act responsibly. And part of that is to not choose a name that you know full well will leave them open to ridicule.

Now you can argue that it shouldn't be that way, but you have to deal in realities, not how you think things ought to be. Reality is that calling your child Jesus (unless like has been said, you belong to a culture where that is seen as normal) is a cruel thing to do to them.

I'm offended that you'd think i'd name my precious child in a mere bid to upset you.
Why would you think so badly of me?
doesn't your negativity reflect badly on you?

You know, I don't think you're actually being serious. I think you're winding people up and watching them go.

BUT if you are being serious: this seems to be much more about a bid for attention from a parent, rather than a genuine desire to name their child something that means something to them.

You sound like you could have picked any 'icon' as some sort of shock-tactic tbh.

I am not a Christian or anything else and am not offended by the idea of calling a child Jesus, Buddah, Theblessedvirgin, Krishna, Jedi or whatever - but it does seem from your posts that you just want to seem 'out there' and 'like spirtitual man' with and it's all pretty empty and meaningless really.

heQet · 03/02/2010 21:59

If you feel that you want to challenge the idea that this name can't be used, fair enough. But do it by changing your own name to Jesus, not by inflicting a name on your child that will make them miserable.

cakeywakey · 03/02/2010 21:59

I once had a Spanish housemate called Jesus pronounced Hey-Zooz, which was fine.

If you're not from a Spanish-speaking cultural background though, you're just being silly and setting your DD up for potential problems. Grow up.

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 22:05

Depends what your surname is. Jesus Potter would sound pretty rubbish, TBH.

grumpypants · 03/02/2010 22:05

I don't think you do want to call him jesus, do you? I think you're a bit bored. It's so obviously going to get a negative - just do it and don't bother polling opinion.

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 22:06

So rubbish, I said it twice just in case you missed the point the first time.

meoww · 03/02/2010 22:15

thankyou to all of the people in this thread who've managed to give me advice about my baby's name without being hateful/sarcastic/mocking towards me

stop accusing me of false things, i like the name jesus.

I've already had your 'feck off' and your 'youre a twonk' messages to me deleted, now please stop harrasing me.

weegiemum · 03/02/2010 22:21

I don't think I am being negative. I've tried to be nice and helpful. I don't care what you call your baby. But I would be a bit at the reason. Why do it. Why offend people when you can just as easily not.

I'm being taken in here, but whatever!

To Christians, Jesus=God. Simple as that.

Thanks for your honestly weegiemum

Don't let someone trolling make your suspicious of me, ive talked about calling him jesus since i was 3 months gone, i settled for jacob because people who being so weird with me, but im still considering using jesus, then maybe jacob as a middle name he could go by.

i just think its negative to assume im trying to offend anyone.
But if youre offended but realise it isnt meant then thats okay i guess..

i still dont understand why its offensive, its a lovely name

anyway...

i'm sorry youve had a bad day, but youre not being helpful, i wanted a discussion about something i'm seriously considering, but on this last page people have thought i'm joking because you have decided i am and wanna tell everyone
i've found your comments upsetting and unhelpful

meoww - as a fellow atheist (if I've understood your views correctly), I'm genuinely puzzled why you want to choose a name for your son that means "God saves"?

I guess I chose DS's name because I liked the meaning it had, as well as how it sounded.

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 22:35

meoww - does it not bother you that some people (a lot of people) would be offended by it? I assume your DS will eventually move outside your own circle of friends, so talking about how your friends won't mind is a bit silly, TBH.

Anyway, I wouldn't be offended by it (am a practising Christian BTW), but I would laugh at you if it was combined with pretty much any non-Hispanic surname. It would just sound ridiculous.

Jacob is a lovely name, though - on my list if I ever have aboy.

oh i'm not too big on meanings, i'm really into how a name sounds on the end of your tongue, like joseph for my first, people say that's biblical but i kinda shrug..
although there was a great native american called joseph.
God could also be interpreted in a few ways, so 'god saves' could mean 'mother nature' saves, which i'm all for..

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 22:41

Meoww - how does it sound with your surname (or the surname your DS will have)? Is it an English sounding surname?
