Help name DC4 - we cannot agree at all!

So, we have a Theo(dore) who is almost 6, so ahead of the curve I hope, but still it's now horribly popular, then a Rufus and although we have a girl's name sorted out, we cannot agree on this baby's name if it is a boy. We'd like it to be a 'smart' name IYKWIM, but not OTT, so things like Ptolemy and Tarquin are out for instance. We have a double-barrelled surname beginning with H, so although we both love Hugo, Henry and William, due to the surname, they don't work.

We thought we'd settled on either Magnus or Hector, but DH has now gone off those - particularly as with the -us ending on both Rufus and Magnus, it might be a bit OTT. We'd like to include Victor in the name as DH's grandfather was Victor, but neither of us like it enough to use it as a first name.

Help!!!

CuppaTeaJanice · 15/01/2010 13:02

Or what about a Scandinavian name ending in -vic? That would bring in the Victor bit too.

PurpleEglu · 15/01/2010 13:22

Like Janices suggestion of Miles. It goes quite nicely with your names

displayuntilbestbefore · 15/01/2010 13:23

I'm also a fan of the name Miles

PanicMode · 15/01/2010 13:34

Thanks, I quite like Miles, but DH isn't sure and doesn't think it's smart enough...!!

Jasper is also one of the other ones we both quite like (I know people dismiss it as being a dog name, but we have a Rufus so I'm immune to that insult ), but DS1 hates it, so DH has said we can't use it!!

Great suggestions everyone - Felix I really like, but there are a fair few around here, and now that we have an uber popular name in Theo, we'd like the next one to be a bit different....Julian, I love, but DH doesn't.

Annabellesmummie - we had Hector on the list, but with the H in the surname, DH thought it wasn't right. I actually really like it (but again, it's been mentioned on here a bit as being the next big thing) so maybe not!

Ratherbeonthepiste - we have (had) several of those on our shortlist and they have, for one reason or another, been vetoed. Hugh doesn't work because of the surname;Monty - DH thinks its too OTT, Arthur is a bit too 'old man' for me. Freddie we both like, but hate Fred (BC would be Frederick) - and it does also seem to be very popular....

Thanks again everyone - you are definitely on the right wavelength as there are so many that we've considered and have been discounted for various reasons.

For instance DS1 can't say his rs, so having a Rufus and a Rupert would be a bit cruel! I love Bartholemew, but not Barty - so it would be a Tolly nn, but we have a Tilly too, so no go; Jude, I love, DH doesn't; Edmund - traitor in CS Lewis so I always think of a priggish character; Angus - love it, DH doesn't; Gabriel = Gayboy nn potential so DH has vetoed; Rafael - I am not sure - DH suggested Ralph (pron. Rafe) but I think that the differing spelling and pronunciation are bound to be difficult; Lawrence - like, DH doesn't; Benedict - I love, but DH thinks 'Ben' is too plain; Dominic - I adore, DH hates Dom; Percy I love, DH doesn't, thinks its OTT; James - too boring; I like Piers, so does he, but with Piers (Moron as DH calls him) being such a numpty it's difficult and we're not sure it goes with the other two. Plus when I've mentioned it to people they look horrified....

Can you see why we're having such problems!!
