I love Cinnamon and also its Spanish translation - Canela, but wasn't brave enough.

Idreaminchocolate · 16/02/2010 21:15

NappyShedSal - "Cinnamon" (for a girl?) is so cute!!

MoChan · 16/02/2010 21:35

Another one I like is Ethel. Honestly, I do. It makes a beautiful sound. Would people think me completely insane if I did use it, though? I think I like Araminta better.

debka · 16/02/2010 21:37

Horatio (from CSI)
My sister wants twins so she can call them Willie and Fanny.

debka · 16/02/2010 21:38

I love Bear, verybusyspider, I'd like Wolf, but my DH would divorce me i think!

BelaLugosiNoir · 16/02/2010 21:46

Forgot one!

Lucifer

Twinnie1975 · 16/02/2010 22:01

I can't explain this but......Keith. I know, I know!

mrsbean78 · 16/02/2010 22:04

I work in a multicultural area and just love some names that just wouldn't be culturally appropriate. Ali Shan O'Brien just doesn't sound right. Ali Shan is my favourite for a boy, with Muawiyah a close second (sp? sounds like moo halve ee ah). I like Aisha or Ekari for a girl.

chaostrulyreigns · 16/02/2010 22:15

Am very surprised my first name has been mentioned!

Favourites that DH vetoed:

Stirling
Dewi
Maggie
Miriam
Rex
Monty
Talitha (which he suggested for DD1 but then completely put his foot down for DD2 when I thought it was a dead cert)

Also really like Jensen but just couldn't. Not really my style to name after pop culture. Although DD1 was apparently a big character in Eastenders (don't watch) and when people mentioned it I exasperatedly replied 'Noooo - War and Peace!'

But ended up with 4 I am very happy with.

lampwick · 16/02/2010 22:45

Eustacia from Return of the Native and Ophelia, great names but too tragic for real life!

Trebuchet · 16/02/2010 22:50

I love Tuppence for a girl. Apparently its a euphamism for vagina tho

Trebuchet · 16/02/2010 22:50

Trebuchet · 16/02/2010 22:52

God I've got to go to bed I think these painkillers are finally kicking in given my crapness at typing... night all x

SoMuchToBits · 16/02/2010 22:59

LetTherebeRock I also love Ozias, which was the name of my great, great, great grandfather, and also my 5 greats grandfather.

Also like some other names which have cropped up in my family tree, e.g. Nathaniel, Alvar and Absalom. Also like Gabriel a lot (which isn't in my family tree).

Girls' names I like Miranda, Juliet and Rosamond, which aren't quite so outlandish, but are still not terribly popular.

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 16/02/2010 23:09

Thurston - for a boy (after a member of sonic youth) DH wouldn't countenance it for our son but I have named one daughter after a favourite singer of mine (PJ Harvey) and another daughter after a folk singer so I am not too disappointed.

OprahWinfrey · 16/02/2010 23:40

lol at this thread, I actually USED my fantasy dream name, as ds's middle name....and then campaigned everyone to use it ;-)

hobbgoblin · 17/02/2010 00:09

Velvet and Plum. Not together.

I did dare use it but her daddy said no chuffing way. Jose.

GraceK · 17/02/2010 00:22

I grew up being the only Grace under the age of about 75 & hated it til I was in my late teens. Now I hate it that people keep shouting my name in supermarkets, I spend ages looking for someone I know & it's actually someone under ten they're yelling at!

Names banned by DH
Nathaniel
Edmund (cos of Blackadder)
Theodore

Dorothea
Melangell
Georgiana / Evangeline / Genevieve (difficult to spell)

Mateja (had a Yugoslav friend at school with this name)
Margot (a friend used it first)
Verity (too many people said it sounded like someone who didn't know how to have fun)

DD has the middle name of Berengaria (the wife of Richard the Lionheart, but also a liner. Came across it at fourteen & it was always on my list of dream names but never as a first name as it doesn't shorten to anything cool - Beri or Gari!)

Possiblities for No 2 (due in 7 weeks) DO include
Boris
Horatio
Lilith
Dorothy
Honeysuckle
Clementine

A friend also gave us the good advice - check the National Statistics Website for the previous few years names & discount anything in the Top 20 so they won't have to share their name with loads of others in their class.

Girls:

Really wanted Edna, t'was my dear nanna's name, but just couldn't name my child after a crusty old drag!

My friend has a daughter called Honey Diva, i WISH i were the type of woman who could get away with calling my kid that, but my friend has pink hair and rides a skateboard, she can call her kid whatever she wants.

Boys, I'm just not exotic enough to get away with any of these:

Lazlo
Wolfgang
Banjo
