Love, love the name but a friend has nabbed it and now i'm not sure.

I love it because to me it's a strong yet feminine name, not loads and loads around but popular enought and a name everyone has heard of and can spell. Personally i'm not into flowery names - (in my opinion) daisy, poppy etc or really 'rare' names.

Any ideas of anything similar to get me pondering a new shortlist...

Emeline, Mathilde, Christabel?

My DD is Isobel and the spelling issue is really not that much of a biggie so long as you don't get hung up on people spelling it wrong from time to time (like on birthday cards). Issy/Izzy is a really cool nickname too IMO. Have never had any second thoughts about having named her this nor how we spelled it.

DD2 is Beatrix (Bea but could also be Trixi). The unanticipated thing that I really love about this name is that every child we know whether they be 1 or 10 instantly gets her name and can say it. She's coming up 2 now and arrives at creche every day to a chorus of "BEA!!" from all the other children.

My friend's mother is Verity and while it is a bit old fashioned I think its very elegant. Although I suppose its in the same category as Faith, Hope and Charity which I've never been a big fan of.

We have an Imogen in our family and her sisters are Rhiannon and Esther (all under 21, don't know why I feel the need to mention that.) Their middles names are Rose, Camilla and Alexandria.

Hope that helps

I like 'elegant' as a description for names....(not that i am but can wish for my possible daughter )

Bea and Esther ruled out due to family ...along with lots of other good names mentioned..

A fabulous list now though!!

Just waiting for dh to be difficult now

Here's another Isobel. It occasionally gets misspelled, s'pose you've got to expect it with all the variations. I don't get precious about it even when MEMBERS OF MY OWN FAMILY get it wrong (for goodness sake)But then I have a Marianne too which gets bonkers spelling/pronunciation sometimes.

Love Blythe, if you don't use it then I will next time I need a name.

All solidly middle-class and sound quite literary/intellectual, without being too princessy and frilly. Lovely names.
