Love, love the name but a friend has nabbed it and now i'm not sure.

I love it because to me it's a strong yet feminine name, not loads and loads around but popular enought and a name everyone has heard of and can spell. Personally i'm not into flowery names - (in my opinion) daisy, poppy etc or really 'rare' names.

Any ideas of anything similar to get me pondering a new shortlist...

Stella.
I think this is a really strong name, and would call my DD that if I ever have one.

Pyrocanthus · 05/10/2009 22:49

I think Daisy and Poppy are quite definitely flower(y) names.

lilysam · 06/10/2009 07:46

Wow - Some great suggestions thank you.

Unfortunately some of the best ones are out due to very close, see all the time friends and family. (Lydia, Olivia, Martha, Amelia etc)

I really really like 'Isobel' but the number of different spellings and more 'flowery nature' IMO of Isabella etc puts me off a little. Or do you just get used to it being spelt differently by people??

Also would class Sophie, Hannah, Jessica as a bit to girly girl for me too.

Love Sadie, and Claudia (except the meaning) but may run them past DH!

I'd always loved Morgan too but have it as a boys name in my head...

Just tell 'em how to spell it! My DD2's middle name is Isabel, but of course nobody needs to spell that.

It's funny how perceptions vary - I'm not wild about very 'girly' names, but to me Sadie is as girly as they come.

Elizabeth/Beth is a good, strong name. Catherine is great (my DD1's middle name) but most diminutives are girly. Both my DDs' first names are listed on this thread.

Lois has grown on me.

HollyGoHeavily · 06/10/2009 11:18

How about Charlotte or Evelyn?

lilysam · 06/10/2009 12:25

DD's middle name is Charlotte - wished i'd saved it!

Pyrocanthus - i know what you mean about other peoples perceptions. As well as being fussy, I'm doubly cursed being a teacher and all the associations with names that brings!!

how about harriet, verity or jessica (these are sisters to imogens that i know)

lilysam · 06/10/2009 12:31

Oooh - love Verity too....is it too posh

would love to convince DH with that one..

I really like lots of the names already mentioned here. erm, Lucy, Susannah, Miranda, Caroline

Concordia · 06/10/2009 23:58

We have an Imogen. I was very keen not to have a flower name (have a bit of a thing against them - sorry everyone) or anything i thought was too girly.
I also didn't want really common / popular for a girl's name.
Other names we considered were -
Naomi
Ellen
Katherine (gave up with this due to concerns about spellings /shorternings)
Lucy
Zoe
Rachel
Susannah
Anna
I liked Marianne but DH vetoed this one. Carla was another DH veto.
Just want to have so many more babies and use up all the names....

Pyrocanthus · 07/10/2009 09:40

I like Rose, but DH works in horticulture and vetoed all flower names. DD1 was Pergola antenatally though.

Tabitha is my fave.
