What do you think - is it too old fashioned?

Did i even sell it correctly, or is the i before the e, or should it be Sheelagh?

you spelled it fine - i think it is cute. i have an auntie sheila who is great, so might be a bit biased!

bellissima · 05/08/2009 15:35

Think it can be either Sheila or Sheilagh.

It reminds me of Sheila Grant in Brookside, "alright there, She?"

Not good.

belgo · 05/08/2009 17:59

Sheelagh/Sheilagh/Sheila are all exceptable spellings.

Pretty name.

belgo · 05/08/2009 18:16

I mean acceptable

LouMacca · 05/08/2009 18:23

lmao. thanks, best laugh I've had all day!

screamingabdab · 05/08/2009 18:31

Nice

If you have a boy, call it Nigel

BitOfFun · 05/08/2009 18:33

If your name is Dee, you will be known as Dee and She. I hope your DP isn't Lee

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 18:38

I think in ten years it will come back.

Personally, I'm not ready for it yet. It's a bit barbara iykwim.

But actually, it's not as bad as Barbara. Middle name?

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 18:39

I have a friend called Sheelagh, and I don't think she hates it, but she's 40ish. I think it would just be odd for a baby. But it's not a terrible name.

Caitni · 05/08/2009 18:46

I like this, but only the Irish spelling Síle. Very underused these days so perhaps time for a revival

tummytickler · 05/08/2009 19:17

I just think of Australians and barbeques tbh. Sounds like a joke name (but then have you seen any of my threads - i am not one to talk there!).
and that god awful Sheilas Wheels advert.

Deemented · 05/08/2009 19:43

To be honest, i'm not even sure i like it myself

Tis my late mothers name, and i feel that if this dc is a girl i should honor her in some way, but could i really inflict Sheila on her?

Ideally i'd use it as a middle name, but i'm not sure it goes with any names i like - and i'm struggling to come up with names as it is.

Rohan Sheila - really not sure if that works or not

Erin Sheila - now i really like this, but DF doesn't like Erin

Bridie Sheila - not sure if that goes together or not

Menna Sheila - again, not sure if it works.

And i'm stumped if it's a boy.

HELP!!!!

I too, love Erin, and it works with Sheila

( BTW, we all feel shitty for dissing your late mum's name)

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 19:55

I think it's ok for a middle name, especially if it would be your daughter's grandmother's name. Sad they never met, so it'd be like passing on a baton.

What about Olwyn Sheila? Olwyn not Irish but seems to have a whiff of Lord of the Rings/celticness to it. Rohan is a boys name. Bridie is a rosary-clutching pious bigot's name, and Menna sounds like a contraceptive device. Please explain your first name choices!!

LouMacca · 05/08/2009 19:59

Don't I just feel awful now you have told us its your late mothers name. Sorry

I have several friends who have used their mothers name as a middle name for their DD (Rita, Doreen and Jean) and i think its fine as a middle name and a nice way to honour your mum.

I too like Erin Sheila but obviously your DF has to like it too!

Deemented · 05/08/2009 20:02

@screamingabdab - thought you might

maggievirgo - i couldn't do Olwyn - there's a hospice near here with the same name, so tis a no go.

I'm just really struggling with this whole naming malarky - can you tell?
