What do you think - is it too old fashioned?

Did i even sell it correctly, or is the i before the e, or should it be Sheelagh?

Taht is the way of men.

Woman "what about Phoebe/Jemma/Maggie/Dulcie?"
Man "nah"
Woman "why?"
man "just nah"

ad infinitum until you've read out every name in the book.

The unusual ones are too unusual "weird".

The normal ones, are too normal and he can't set aside his personal associations.. "it's a fat girl's name, or "I cycled round the block with an Ellen iin 1980".

Woman (slightly sarcastically) "Ok, Lynne it is then??"

Man "No. Too boring."

Woman arghghghghghghghghghghhgghghgh

< still yearning to use the name Gabriel >

jemart · 05/08/2009 21:03

Sheila makes me think barmaid.
Erin is nice.

Deemented · 05/08/2009 21:04

DF doesn't live with me atm, so won't get his thoughts till Friday.

Reason he vetoed Erin was, and i quote

'It's really unusual and i've never heard of it'

Erin, FFS!!!

definition of Australian foreplay[according to 18 yr old cousin],'Brace yourself Sheila!'

DiamondHead · 05/08/2009 21:15

I think Sheila is the gaelic version of Julia. That would be a nice middle name.

Deemented · 05/08/2009 21:18

My mums real name was Julia, but when she went to school in Ireland the nuns changed it to Sheila and she was forever known as that.

I;m not overly keen on Julia though...

lackenstrand · 05/08/2009 21:18

Julia is a lovely name and my DD1's middle name. How about Tara?

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 21:48

I prefer Juliet.

Never knew Julia and Sheila were the same name??

campion · 06/08/2009 01:25

We had a girl at school called Sheila until recently and it kind of jarred - just didn't seem to fit.

Maybe it's because it's my Mum's name and of her generation. I thought it was the Irish/ Gaelic form of Celia ( which I like better, ditto Julia).

nappyaddict · 06/08/2009 02:11

I prefer Julia/Juliet to Sheila. Don't like Erin at all - too popular for me. How about Cecilia or Cecily instead as Sheila is a variant of those.

nappyaddict · 06/08/2009 02:13

Love Rohan and Bridie though. Not ever heard of Menna it sounded made up to me

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 06/08/2009 02:26

One of my best friends of 21 years is a Sheila. I hate it. She's lovely, but the name is hard.

Sheila squealer!

PrincessTweetz · 06/08/2009 18:14

Aww...my mum's name is Sheila...my older sister gave her only daughter the name Sheila as one of the middle names 11 years ago now ...but for my little girl...I kinda did my own take on 'honouring my mum' and naming my dd after her by spelling her middle name Shay, S-H-E-I ...so when people ask where I got the name from, I say it's my own take of my mum's name...and my mum absolutely loves it cuz she doesn't particularly like the name Sheila anyway, but feels priveleged that I did it...not for everyone I kno, but I love it!!

pedalmonster · 06/08/2009 18:22

Don't do it! Your mother can be honored in another way, you could choose anotehr name beginning with S.

Deemented · 06/08/2009 19:01

Well, had a quick natter to DF earlier, and he vetoed Romily and Delaney. He did however, say he liked Siofra and Laoise - so we may have progress!!!

Yay !

I also met someone called Laney (or Lanie ?) recently.

Any good ?

macana · 06/08/2009 19:13

Ok, so I have a plan you might like....agree it's lovely to honour your mum's name (for the same reason if I ever have a girl she'll be Valeria), but to be honest I really don't like Sheila, it's just a bit outdated.

However, why not use Sheila in your mums memory but give your little girl a new, fresh lease of life by rearranging the letters to get Elisha?

What do you think??

screamingabdab · 06/08/2009 19:43

macana That. Is. Genius.

wheresclaire · 06/08/2009 20:20

I had the exact problem. DD was almost Robyn Sheila. DH had a brainwave (rare) and we decided on Leila. Sounds and almost spelt the same. We also went with May for a middle name as that was my mum's birth month.

pania · 06/08/2009 20:37

Did your mother like Sheila?

Or, could you use her middle name?

Deemented · 06/08/2009 21:06

Good idea, Macana, will put it to DF.

Pania i can't say i'm overly keen on Mary Margret, so maybe not

I'm actually being drawn to the names Siobhan or Sinead. Still like Siofra though, but not too sure how to pronounce it properly - is the Sio it pronounced as it is in Siobhan, giving an 'Shi' sound, or is it more of a 'She' sound???

OP posts:
maggievirgo · 07/08/2009 12:22

It's SHEE-fra. I PRefer it to siobhan. It is fresher sounding, but i suppose siobhan is more classic, less 'of the moment'.

Tbh, although Siobhan and Sinead are ok (prefer Sinead) they sound a little dated i nIreland. Like a Siobhan would be in her forites and a sinead probably in her 30s..

Would that matter at all? probably not if you're in the UK but just letting you know.

Did your mum ever mention any other names that she would have liked if she'd had another daughter for example.??

maggievirgo · 07/08/2009 12:29

Siofra Leila would be S Leila sur name. That would really honour Sheila, but in a contemporary way.

Tinker · 07/08/2009 14:55

Did your mum have a middle name that you could use? I think Julia is gorgeous though.
