What do you think - is it too old fashioned?

Did i even sell it correctly, or is the i before the e, or should it be Sheelagh?

I am guessing your style is eccentric but established names with a celtic/hippy/nature flavour.......?

Is that about right?

I will have a think. No Amelia, Isabel, Sophie suggestions??!!!

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:05

by established I just mean real, with some basis, not invented.

screamingabdab · 05/08/2009 20:07

Elvis Sheila ..... that has a ring to it ........

Deemented · 05/08/2009 20:08

Well, i have three children already, Ciaran, Brennan and Brogan, and i love Irish/Galic sounding names. Am not adverse to Welsh either. I need something... different. Not different, but unusual different...

Deemented · 05/08/2009 20:11

And i have a cousin Naomi so that's a no go too.

Teegan ?

screamingabdab · 05/08/2009 20:11

Jeez

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:25

Arwen - I like this one! not a LOTR geek, but it's a good one.
Tegan is nice. Welsh. I love Tegan but I hate Regan. Don't know why.

Zelda - not cletic but I like it. Quirky, powerful, strong.
Belinda plays bridge with Zelda. Don't mess with either of them.
Selma HOmer Simpson's aunt. I like it. My aunts have far worse names.

Shona - gaelic for Happy.
Nollaig (NULLig) gaelic for christmas. Very unusual here too. Heard very occasionally.
Bethan - WElsh for Elizabeth I believe
Muireann (Mwirren) gaelic, scots and Irish
Clio (goddess of something!? educate me somebody? - Clio short for Clodagh would really be my cupán té)
Zyla - I think I just made that one up. but like Lyla with a z. too like Xylaphone?
Gaia (goddess of earth. pronounced like Guy-ah) like it. Unusual but sane.
Skye - as in the isle of. love this one. never been there so I couldn't get a way with it.
Romilly - after romilly weeks? the mulberry handbag? romilly street in W1!? whatever, I like it.

Shelby, like a shelby mustang! NOt a big fan of car names, usually, but I do sort of like this one. Just like the sound of it, pretty sound but not too frilly.
Delaney - don't get this one, but it's the new madison in the usa. It matches your other children's names well.
Blythe Welsh, saw it on American boards a bit, a while ago. Ditto Brynn, but for girls.

Girly names not yet popular
Posy
Tanzy
Polly

Urbane urban chic
Lois
Dulcie
Edie

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:26

.. any of these making you reach for your pencil//?

screamingabdab · 05/08/2009 20:31

maggie I love Romilly, and also Romy

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:34

Romy! Yes, lovely, it's not wtf? but it's quirky and pretty.

Also, Meren?

Deemented · 05/08/2009 20:37

I like Delaney and Romilly - also like Rominy for some strange reason. Not so keen on t'others.

I'm a hard one to please, me.

One of my favouristest people in the world ever is called Sheila (she is mid-30's).
I like it.

BUT she has been teased mercilessly all her life

bellissima · 05/08/2009 20:43

Er, 'Delaney Sheila', as in reverse of Sheila (?Shelagh) Delaney, author of 'A Taste of Honey'?

am I just very old? do I just like 60s kitchen sink drama? well maybe. but Delaney a surname, sorry.

NB my mother also a Sheila. and definitely of Irish (sligo) stock but alas too old to boast an 'authentic' spelling. I don't consider that that negates her ethnicity.

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:44

What about Morven? Welsh for Mermaid. I just read that on another thread.

HEY! this one is like sheelagh, but not as (ahem cough) frumpy old-fashioned

Siofra. Pronounced Shee-fra. That means fairy in gaelic.

hmmm

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:46

Waht about Zoe - that's a no nonsense, cute name. Would suit somebody with non-frilly tastes.

Deemented · 05/08/2009 20:47

Ohhh.. i like Siofra...

OP posts:
Sazisi · 05/08/2009 20:48

What about Laoise? It's pronounced 'Lee-sha' so is very similar, and very Irish

maggievirgo · 05/08/2009 20:50

ok get out your notebook, write down Romilly, Delaney, Siofra. report back later. Does husband have a say!? husbands are generally the spanner in the works...

screamingabdab · 05/08/2009 20:51

Siofra !

Laoise !

screamingabdab · 05/08/2009 20:52
