Sorry to be so blunt in the title.
Araminta is my new love. I just think it is really pretty and not over popular or silly.
My worry is that it is too posh.
What do you think and what are your opinions of the name? Help!

cheesesarnie · 27/07/2009 12:48

i know a araminta.its very nice so long as you realise she will always be minty.

PestoSoggyMonster · 27/07/2009 12:48

I love it too, also Minty

Go for it!

girlandboy · 27/07/2009 12:48

A bit too posh for me I'm afraid.

Also reminds me of a toothpaste/mouthwash as well.
"Try new Araminta and get that just brushed freshness"

suwoo · 27/07/2009 12:51

It is super posh, but I love it!

My DH would never have let me go for it though, he has a serious inbuilt ponceometer

bigstripeytiger · 27/07/2009 12:51

It is quite posh. OK if you can carry it off.

HelenofSparta · 27/07/2009 12:56

I think it is lovely. Am just considering whether it goes with DD (Hermione)?!!

Is it pronounced as spelt? Will have to look up where it comes from now...thanks!!

LyraSilvertongue · 27/07/2009 12:57

It is extremely posh.
Use it if you can handle it being shortened to Minty.

TakingItUpTheTailPipe · 27/07/2009 12:57

I like it as long as you have the background to back it up IYSWIM.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/07/2009 13:43

if you are related to Dukes and Duchesses, I would say go for it.

Otherwise pretentious imo, even thoygh it is a very pretty name in itself.

I would personally loathe the shortening Minty, so that would put me off completely.

UnquietDad · 27/07/2009 13:44

Moondial!

PuppyMonkey · 27/07/2009 13:44

I think it is ludicrously posh. Poncey indeed.

sandyballs · 27/07/2009 13:46

Don't do it!! It's awful, I can just picture a little brat with ringlets stamping her feet because she hasn't got her own way . 'Oh daddy pleeeeeeease', with a lisp.

artichokes · 27/07/2009 13:47

I quite like Araminta (although it is uber posh) but I HATE the nn Minty.

Your OP says Araminta is nice because it is not silly, maybe so, but Minty is very silly.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/07/2009 13:55

Lol Moondial!

I can't remember anything about it other than a poor victorian orphan and a girl called Araminta with hair like Tracy Beaker.

Homebird8 · 27/07/2009 14:13

I know a lovely little Araminta. She's 7 and my friend's little boy thinks the sun shines out of her!

AtheneNoctua · 27/07/2009 14:14

I don't like it at all. Way too pretentious for me. (And I tend to like posh things)

Nancy66 · 27/07/2009 14:26

It's very posh BUT it's also not very nice.
Very unfeminine I think.

notsoteenagemum · 27/07/2009 14:42

I used to love Moondial

It is v.posh though, but I think I like it.

AramintaCane · 27/07/2009 14:52

no its lovely

CarriePooter · 27/07/2009 14:58

I love it. It was on my list for dd but sounds stupid in my accent.

Caitni · 27/07/2009 15:19

'Fraid I hate this name - it's my favourite example of a ludicrous posh English female name. The full name sounds like brand name for a car or something. The inevitable NN is a flavour. Not a good combo IMO.

I worked in book publishing for years and worked with my share of Minties and it's just a horrible name. And extremely hard to take a grown woman seriously in a meeting when she is universally called Minty.

shootfromthehip · 27/07/2009 15:22

Where I come from if you gave a child that name, you may as well start saving for the therapy she's going to need too .

It is very, very poncey. Minty is actually worse- it's what you should call a horse and not a child. Oh dear- I am being mean but really.

Some friends of friends who are very posh have a daughter called Araminta (she is known as Minty).

They are loaded, live in a very posh area and she goes to a prep. school. IMO I think this is the criteria you would need to get away with a name like this.
