splutters Jeremy and Kyle definately got me!
I've known loads of kids with strange names, but I don't remember them now. Mostly unique names that I liked I remember. Renu and Parastoo for instance. First girl was Indian and the second was Iranian (Parastoo means Dove, not Swallow, which is what my Dad translated it into for us in a moment of mistranslation which lead to a lot of giggles from 3 young-teen girls )
Meliae is an odd one, it means something about wood nymphs I think? I like that too though...
Katiestar - I agree with Fern and Basil (I love Basil haha!) But, a brother and sister pair... Some names are cool on their own, but should never be paired together!
I think the virtue names is a good point in this country really but I do like Temperance I must admit (Kathy Reichs fan, so sue me lol). They are very Christian names, so I would find them odd in non-Christian families (if that makes sense?) I would also find people using foreign names odd too. I just don't see the connection to the person there. It's like I love Celtic names, but I would rather use Persian names for my [future] children because it would be symbolic of their Persian blood, much like my name and my two sisters names are both English and Iranian, a show of both of our heritages.
On badly spelt names, I'm a Nikki, and last year I worked in a place with 250 people there in the middle of nowhere. Only one other person shared my name, very annoying girl too so people tended to get annoyed when they found out 'Nikki' would be about and it turned out to be me not her. To the point. Her name was spelt Nickie... Nikki is a masculine name anyway (imo, I have been saddled with it after all ), but that spelling makes it 100 times worse for a girl
What about 'olden day' names? The ones our grandparents have that are now making the rounds again? Some are very beautiful whilst others are a bit too olden day (for me anyway)! Edith and Ellis are two that I find it hard to get my head around (though there are roads with each of these names respectively at home, so doesn't seem human enough for me I s'pose), especially Ellis for a girl; is it traditionally a girls name? Because to me it seems more masculine? And Margaret, I've always found that one a bit of a mouthful, especially for a child (Mum's middle name, my names name and her mother's name too!) My Nan has been the nickname 'Gug', because her younger sister had difficulty with her name as a child lol
Wow. Long post is long. Like the cat.
