sliverchick · 17/07/2009 23:10

once met a fella called EGNATIOUS , wtf

nomorecake · 17/07/2009 23:59

i really dont think there is anything wrong with the name Fanula Christadula.
or Fanu.

it sounds like a greek name to me.

surely the name 'Fannie' is worse.

a lot of the names on this thread are perfectly alright.

lagaanisace · 18/07/2009 00:08

There's an urban legend round here that there's a girl who called her daughter, brace yourself,

Chlamydia.

A friend swore it was true.

pickyvic · 18/07/2009 00:08

i think your misunderstanding me. i actually like fanula chistadula. lights up my day actually. i think its lovley but it is unusual, it does make me smile though! i think its lovely!

Stretch · 18/07/2009 00:17

What a horrible thread. So by certain other people's reckoning, you can post whatever offensive bollox you like, and the rest of us have to shut up and hide the thread?? I think not.

Newsflash: People will get offended by offensive things. Even if you say We Are Only Kidding.

Wonderstuff · 18/07/2009 00:29

JJ - not short for anything poor boys given name.
Twins Dolce and Gabbana (might be an urban myth but a friend was sure it was true)
Wendy House
I always thought Austin Healy was quite weird

On the whole it is rare that a name strikes me as odd. I cringe at very obviously badly spelt names, but really would be dull if we were all the same wouldn't it. Every name I came up for dd was critisied by someone and none of them were too 'out there' baffles me why people will ask you if what name you are thinking off then diss it. People are so rude and stuck up about names. Tolerance people.

nomorecake · 18/07/2009 00:33

i like Wendy House!
(the name, i dont actually know her!)

pickyvic · 18/07/2009 00:35

make up your own jokes....go on i really dont mind. ive heard them all already!

my son is called justin. (not!)

nomorecake · 18/07/2009 00:37

pickyvic · 18/07/2009 00:39

thank you!

madameDefarge · 18/07/2009 00:41

A friend taught brothers called Byron and Farley Valentine.

FAQinglovely · 18/07/2009 00:41

well said Stretch.

I'm just glad I never actually saw the post where someone asked what sort of name my DS1's name is (they didn't say FAQ's DS - they just his name).

Someone told me about it, and by the time I'd found the thread others had already reported the post and it had been deleted.

Just as well I didn't see the post in question as my mental health was tits up and I'm sure it would have done me the world of good .

PixiNanny · 18/07/2009 01:40

splutters Jeremy and Kyle definately got me!

I've known loads of kids with strange names, but I don't remember them now. Mostly unique names that I liked I remember. Renu and Parastoo for instance. First girl was Indian and the second was Iranian (Parastoo means Dove, not Swallow, which is what my Dad translated it into for us in a moment of mistranslation which lead to a lot of giggles from 3 young-teen girls )

Meliae is an odd one, it means something about wood nymphs I think? I like that too though...

Katiestar - I agree with Fern and Basil (I love Basil haha!) But, a brother and sister pair... Some names are cool on their own, but should never be paired together!

I think the virtue names is a good point in this country really but I do like Temperance I must admit (Kathy Reichs fan, so sue me lol). They are very Christian names, so I would find them odd in non-Christian families (if that makes sense?) I would also find people using foreign names odd too. I just don't see the connection to the person there. It's like I love Celtic names, but I would rather use Persian names for my [future] children because it would be symbolic of their Persian blood, much like my name and my two sisters names are both English and Iranian, a show of both of our heritages.

On badly spelt names, I'm a Nikki, and last year I worked in a place with 250 people there in the middle of nowhere. Only one other person shared my name, very annoying girl too so people tended to get annoyed when they found out 'Nikki' would be about and it turned out to be me not her. To the point. Her name was spelt Nickie... Nikki is a masculine name anyway (imo, I have been saddled with it after all ), but that spelling makes it 100 times worse for a girl

What about 'olden day' names? The ones our grandparents have that are now making the rounds again? Some are very beautiful whilst others are a bit too olden day (for me anyway)! Edith and Ellis are two that I find it hard to get my head around (though there are roads with each of these names respectively at home, so doesn't seem human enough for me I s'pose), especially Ellis for a girl; is it traditionally a girls name? Because to me it seems more masculine? And Margaret, I've always found that one a bit of a mouthful, especially for a child (Mum's middle name, my names name and her mother's name too!) My Nan has been the nickname 'Gug', because her younger sister had difficulty with her name as a child lol

Wow. Long post is long. Like the cat.

lagaanisace · 18/07/2009 01:42

Actually, you're right. Am suddenly feeling ashamed for having participated . My 3 DCs have names which are unusual by some people's standards. My MIL is horrified that they're not good old fashioned names. So what freedom of speech do I have?

PixiNanny · 18/07/2009 01:47

*has had... Bad grammar

mumzy · 18/07/2009 09:54

Malena (medical term for black poo caused by blood in the stools from internal bleeding)

mumzy · 18/07/2009 10:00

Now its got me thinking about the ones I've come across over the years:

Tia Maria
Chardonnay
Lotus Elan
April-May (nice enough by themselves but not together!)

caramelwaffle · 18/07/2009 10:37

Rewind (why, oh why?)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/07/2009 10:46

Tresemme

PixiNanny · 18/07/2009 12:20

Oo, on the April-May name, I've heard of sisters having all month names before I think they were June and April (or maybe a May? I don't remember), and had a '...ber' month as their middles names... They had a brother called Augustus too. So much for keeping to a theme!

cookielove · 18/07/2009 12:36

how is heaven spelt backwards pronounced?
Nevaeh?

freyski · 18/07/2009 12:38

Lanesra - the mother only found out why her partner had insisted on it when one of his friends let it slip that it was arsenal backwards!!

katiestar · 18/07/2009 14:14

Stretch -Come on you don't call your child Rewind or Dolce and Gabana if you don' want people to comment on threads like this!
