I am a bit sold on Oenone despite what you all said

Which middle name though, and do you think it's a bit weird to have with older DD Hermione?

Middle names:

Kitty
Betsie
Mathilde
Mabel
Bellatrix

I used to work with an Oenone and I actually really like it (she prononced it Oh-noh-nee) but we did used to call her OneOne to each other.

I think it's far too similar sounding to Hermione though.

AitchTwoOh · 26/05/2009 12:40

surely to god 'like lonely without the l' has put you off? i'm not normally so vehement about these things but it sounds crap with hermione and looks like oneone. i cannot believe you're presevering with this. plus it does sound like oneone herself was a bit of a drag...

AitchTwoOh · 26/05/2009 12:41

yep, you blew your chance of a oneone the day you called your other kid hermione. that's it, kaput, move on. for the sake of the children...

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/05/2009 12:52

Well, I like Oenone and said so on the other thread. She will end up being called Noni, I expect, anyway.

However...I don't think it goes at all well with Hermione, they do sound very similar. And I would also not bother at all with middle names because I think any name would sound faintly ridiculous.

I love greek names and Oenone would be one of my fantasy names if I had another girl (no chance of getting it past DP though). My other favourite greek names are:

Artemis
Hera
Ariadne
Demeter
Elektra
Hero
Hestia

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/05/2009 12:56

Oh, and Iris. That would be the name of any future baby girl I may have (fantasy again).

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/05/2009 12:58

Please do not name your child Oenone Bellatrix, though. Or Oenone Betsy. They sound like advertising agencies

DownyEmerald · 26/05/2009 12:58

Well if Artemisia is a bit too much - how about Artemis. That goes with Hermione I think. You really can't do one-one with Hermi-one.

BTW I am on this thread because as a dragonfly I'm into watery things, lots of dragonflies, butterflies have nymphs etc in their scientific names and also Hermione is dps fave name, but it is the scientific name of a sea mouse which is a rather fabby invertebrate type thing with 'fur', also called a fire worm.

Tho' maybe you didn't want to know that!

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 14:28

Does anything take your fancy here?

noddyholder · 26/05/2009 14:30

I thought it was like winona without the w.It would be hard to pair with another name as it is quite a statemnt itself but on its own I really like it

campion · 26/05/2009 16:54

Since you have already wished it, why not change your name to Oenone, hobbgoblin, and give DD yours? You like it, DD would be (Oe) none the wiser , everyone would get used to it - eventually - and you would experience at first hand how tedious having to explain your name can be.

It's a win-win situation.

OrmIrian · 26/05/2009 16:56

I knew an Oenone at school. I quite like it. But she did get called one-one and one squared most of the time

claireybee · 26/05/2009 17:09

I actually quite like Oenone. But not with those middle names. And not if you already have a Hermione, sorry.

(I don't read it as Oneone though)

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 17:23

I do think Oenone is pretty but:

a) your DD will get tired of being asked how to spell it,

b) she will get tired of being asked how to pronounce it,

c) it is far too similar to Hermione.

And definitely not Bellatrix - people will think Harry Potter villainess when they hear it for a long time to come.

Antonia White's real name was Eirene, acquired from her Classics master father. I'm afraid she hated it.

What about Selene?

ravenAK · 26/05/2009 19:52

I was v keen on Clio (the muse of History) for dd1. Dh persuaded me that no-one would think beyond the car.

(& it's not even a cool car, was his KO argument...)

Minerva? I championed that for dd2 - vetoed on the grounds of being too Harry Potter, but still great - goddess of Wisdom - unless you can't bear to mix Greek & Roman?

Washersaurus · 26/05/2009 20:10

Nerida?

I don't like Oneone either I'm afraid, and definitely not with Hermione (which is lovely)

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 26/05/2009 21:03

what about greek boys names everyone??

the classics teacher at my sons school was delighted when she heard what we had called ds5

.....i think she was one of two people!!

We love it though

screamingabdab · 26/05/2009 21:22

Sorry, Bellatrix ?????

That's like something from an Asterix book

What about Cacofanix ?

screamingabdab · 26/05/2009 21:26

Seriously, what about Juno?
