I am a bit sold on Oenone despite what you all said

Which middle name though, and do you think it's a bit weird to have with older DD Hermione?

Middle names:

Kitty
Betsie
Mathilde
Mabel
Bellatrix

Oenone is quite pretty, but all of the suggested middle names sound really silly. Oenone Kitty? Do me a favour! .

I would bypass middle names with such a funky first name.

peppapig3 · 25/05/2009 12:15

I actually really like Greek names but this one is a bit difficult to spell/ pn. It is also really too similar to Hermione IMO. How about some of those Heated suggested. They are lovely. I have Ariadne on my list which is also unusual. Do you like that?

RedCharityBonney · 25/05/2009 20:24

Corinna?

Oenone is just a bit too too. But maybe that's why you like it!

Hermione charming btw.

AitchTwoOh · 25/05/2009 20:30

imagine shouting for your children to come home from the swingpark... hermioneoenone, we're going home now. you'll just sound like an echo.

warthog · 25/05/2009 20:58

lmao

hobbgoblin · 25/05/2009 23:48

I really want it to NOT have the effect.

I justified the similar to Hermione thing with the fact that I pronounce all syllables in Hermione as opposed to Her My Knee. Her My Knee does sound similar to Oenone when you say it lazily. Quite different, I think when you say Her My Oh Knee.

LOL sorry it sounds like tellitubby speak

hobbgoblin · 25/05/2009 23:54

Except it isn't! I studied Classical Civilisation and loved it, love the literature, this is why it is not teletubby speak to me.

She was a bit of a loser tbh.

OK, with classical names it's tricky to find a female with a happy ending (excepting I suppose goddesses), but Oenone is remembered a) for getting chucked by Paris when he met Helen & b) for refusing to heal him after he was fatally wounded. Whereupon she topped herself.

So not a name with especially great associations imo...

hobbgoblin · 25/05/2009 23:56

Some say she was into narcotics too .

Shall we re-discuss Pleione?

OP posts:
hobbgoblin · 25/05/2009 23:57

I should have been named sodding Oenone all things considered!

ravenAK · 26/05/2009 00:03

How about Cassandra? At least she tried...

The Iliad's crap for girls' names. Have you tried the Odyssey? Penelope...Calypso...

Clary · 26/05/2009 00:28

sorry hobbgoblin, I also read it as oneone - thought you meant you were sold on one name and had mistyped...

Please don't call your child this, no-one will have heard it or be able to say it (or spell it).

I was classically educated (ancient greek A-level) and I have never heard of it. I like Hermione btw.

FWIW my kids have unusual names as in there are not that many about (esp DD) but no-one has boggled at them as they are names their grandma had.

MichelleObama · 26/05/2009 00:42

Clary, HOW can you say you are classically educated and have never heard of Oenone. She was Paris's poor abandoned water nymph wife fgs!

Clary · 26/05/2009 00:46

well for my Greek A level I read Homer, Euripides, Plato and Demosthenes in the original...guess oenone didn't come up.

I knew Paris had a wife but not her name. sorry. How about Helen? (at least she did a bit better). I know two small Helens, it's coming back

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 01:02

Artemisia? Now, she was a smart classical cookie.

jabberwocky · 26/05/2009 01:11

well artemesisia is also a plant

I like Calliope, Cordelia, Ophelia and Camille.

jabberwocky · 26/05/2009 01:12

weird, that link was supposed to be in bold...

Nicki10 · 26/05/2009 09:31

Dont't do it, don't do it.

There has just been one born around here and no one can prenounce it, even when the mum tells others they always ask to be told it again and usually still get it wrong. Everyone is talking behind her back on what a ridiculous choice it is and how it is the poor child who has to live with it. The regular joke is that your prenounce it lonely without the L!!!

Please don't subject your daughter to this kind of taunting.

Hermione on the other hand is a beautiful, find something equally as lovely for DD2.

SouthMum · 26/05/2009 09:47

Speaking as someone who was bullied most of her school life I beg you please do not call your child this as it will just give any potential bully more ammo to ridicule your child with.

If you do decide to call the kid this I would give her a nice middle name so she can use that if she prefers it. Or at least make sure she knows she can always change her name by deed poll when she is old enough.

Lancelottie · 26/05/2009 10:00

I know an adult Oenone. In her case, it was more the comedy surname that drew attention (maybe her parents were deliberately trying to distract people?)

DownyEmerald · 26/05/2009 10:14

How about oenanthe - a water plant - probably named after the nymph but also a bird (wheatear). Doesn't look like one-one, but still classical?

hobbgoblin · 26/05/2009 10:19

Artemisia is a possibility but isn't it a bit extravagant sounding.

Ooh, find me a lesser known nymph or summit ladies..!

OP posts:
DownyEmerald · 26/05/2009 10:26

Well you could go for Naiad - or is that too generic? Galatea?

hobbgoblin · 26/05/2009 11:05

Thanks Downy. There aren't loads I like, and many of these types of names aren't 'soft' enough iyswim?
