Eleri Samphire?

Just typing it I feel like the answer may be yes.

DD2 is due in a few months. DD1 (15mths) is called Megan Juliet. Her second name is after my sister who died.

I wanted another Welsh first name for this little girl, although living in England now, but have been struggling for a middle name.

People have raised eybrows at the name Eleri - is Samphire adding fuel to the fire?

DH and I are prepared for fulla nd franck feedback. What do you really think?

Yes she will hate you. Don't do it to her.

MyEye · 03/03/2009 16:14

I know a 4yo Samphire. Her mother is just what you'd expect.
I shall say no more. Ziiiipppppp.

HerNameWasLola · 03/03/2009 16:39

I think Eleri is a beautiful name. Lulu it's pronounced e-lair-ee (I think ).

Not so sure about Samphire though, although the place we go on holiday does a delicious samphire tapas... It would almost be worth using it for your DD so that when she asks you the reason in a few years you can reply "well, your father and I were watching Master Chef, we were quite stressed at the time... actually I think we might have been on the verge of a breakdown"

Hope stress levels are subsiding now though

TiggyR · 03/03/2009 16:40

Well that's interesting because I'd expect a slightly hippy new-age free spirit type. But I wouldn't have thought it necessary to keep that under wraps so I can only assume she's something much worse!

MyEye · 03/03/2009 16:49

[Unzips, just for a second]
She says things like, "Oh, we don't have any plastic toys in our house, wooden ones made in a Guatemalan co-op are so much more stimulating to the imagination."
Or, "Oh, do your children like fishfingers? Mine prefer organic fairtrade alfalfa rissoles."
I swear to god.

fatandfedup · 03/03/2009 16:57

I like Eleri it is unusual and sound pretty.

Not sure about Samphire. I have an unusual middle name which I hated as a child and now as an adult I love for its uniqueness and the story behind how I got it.

It should be your choice and she won't hate you forever for it.

TiggyR · 03/03/2009 16:58

Ah. As I expected then, just more irritating.

silkcushion · 03/03/2009 18:44

Thank you all for your suggestions and feedback.

I have received a (much needed)cyber slap across the face which has brought me to my senses

DH hasn't read all of this so I shall perhaps give him a real slap across the face and say SAMPHIRE wtf were you thinking? and pretend it was all his silly idea!

I am simply not pretentious and hippyish enough to have such a ridiculous name for one of my children (as Llaregub knows). Indeed, I have never even seen an alfalfa rissole let alone eaten one.

Eleri is a definite fave though and she squiggled when I first suggested it (in my pg befuddled world that is a sign of agreement).

Now to settle on a middle name. Dh loves Isabella (mentioned by someone) but I am more of the opinion that a single syllable name would sound better.

All further suggestions gratefully received

Maeve?

llareggub · 03/03/2009 18:50

Yes, you are definitely not pretentious or hippyish, you are right!

FairLadyRantALot · 03/03/2009 18:57

silk, if it is pronounced EE-lary....do you think people might think she is called Hilary?

FairLadyRantALot · 03/03/2009 19:00

Eleri May?
Eleri Rose?
Eleri Eve?
Eleri Faye?
Eleri Ann?

janeite · 03/03/2009 19:09

Isabella was my suggestion I think, as it is Shakespeare inspired, like Juliet.

Lots of single syllable names work really well with Eleri but many of them are becoming extremely popular as middle names, if that bothers you at all?

Eleri Grace
Eleri Joy
Eleri May/Mae
Eleri June
Eleri Kate
Eleri Claire
Eleri Ruth

Bumperslucious · 03/03/2009 19:47

Phew, glad you've come around about Samphire! It's a pregnancy thing! We all have it at some point!

I like Eleri but then I lived in deepest darkest Wales for 5 years so not unusual to me, but she will struggle living in England, I expect she will always have to spell it and pronounce it, but that's not the end of the world. I like Eleri May or Eleri Rose.

Good luck finding a name.

suwoo · 03/03/2009 22:11

It is pronounced Ell-erry if you are using the correct welsh pronunciation which silkcushion is. Ell Erry....not ellery.

lotspot · 03/03/2009 22:15

i think eleri would be lovely with a more 'normal' middle name - will sound pretty and unique but not completley wacky

when put with samphire (which makes me think saphire with a typo - sorry!!) its a bit too out their imho

lotspot · 03/03/2009 22:20

sorry didnt make it all the way end, and just spotted your response

i like eleri jane but i think i'm pronouncing eleri like celery -but im not sure how it should be said and my other attempt at saying it sounded truely awful with jane [smie]

im rambling now....

suwoo · 03/03/2009 22:24

ELL-ERRY.
