Eleri Samphire?

Just typing it I feel like the answer may be yes.

DD2 is due in a few months. DD1 (15mths) is called Megan Juliet. Her second name is after my sister who died.

I wanted another Welsh first name for this little girl, although living in England now, but have been struggling for a middle name.

People have raised eybrows at the name Eleri - is Samphire adding fuel to the fire?

DH and I are prepared for fulla nd franck feedback. What do you really think?

Eleri is nice.

diedandgonetodevon · 01/03/2009 21:29

Eleri is lovely but personally think Samphire is a bit but that's possibly because I hate the taste of samphire

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:30

yes Juliet was my sister.

Eleri doesn't rhyme with Celery it's pronounced ee - lary (rhymes with Mary). hope that makes sense.

Samphire really did come from desperation. I was in Wales today and went to church with my mother. The vicar talked about St David in his sermon - his mother was called Non. I told DH I liked it - he laughed and then I didn't like to admit it wasn't a joke.

Seems like Samphire would be silly so I need some alternatives please.

You say you want another Welsh name, my favourite Welsh girls name is
Genevra,

I went to school with one and always thought it was so pretty

CuppaTeaJanice · 01/03/2009 21:32

Eleri is too much like Hilary, one of my least favourite names, and Celery, one of my least favourite foods! Never tried samphire though!!

Sapphire is lovely though, it was on our shortlist. As was Eloise.

janeite · 01/03/2009 21:32

Do you like any of my Shakespeare ones?

Or do they have to be Welsh?

preggersplayspop · 01/03/2009 21:33

Eleri is lovely, I was brought up in Wales so it doesn't sounds unusual to me.

Samphire - I thought sounded ok, bit odd, but now I know its a vegetable it would just be cruel!

How about Saffron instead....yes, I its still a cooking ingredient, but it works a bit better!!

suwoo · 01/03/2009 21:37

I would pronounce Eleri, Ell-eri if saying it with the correct welsh accent or Ell-Ary, not quite how you said. Don't live in Wales anymore, but am a welsh speaker.

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:38

DH likes Eleri Isabella. Doesn't have to be a Welsh middle name. DH isn't Welsh and neither am I but I grew up there and feel Welsh.

Not keen on Saffron though sorry

flimflammum · 01/03/2009 21:39

I thought of Saffron as an alternative too, but then you think of Saffie from Ab Fab.

What about Cerys? Or is that too common in Wales?

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:39

Su you are right - my pregnant brain found it almost impossible to describe how to pronounce it.

I pronounce it the first way too

unfortunately I know/knew some not very nice girls named Cerys which sort of puts me off. Cerys is lovely name though.

We did think of Eleri Mae, Eleri Rose or Eleri Grace - what do you think?

janeite · 01/03/2009 21:41

Eleri Isabella sounds nice. Love Isabella.

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:42

I think Samphire sounds like the name of a cheeky mermaid or young sea witch. However, I don't think middle names need to be vetted and worried about in quite the same way as first names, tbh. They are not nearly as public and I think you can therefore use a bit more creativity/take a few more risks without worrying so much about the possible negative response of others/later hatred of your child, as they don't loom that large in day to day life. If she hates Samphire she need never use it and no one will question that. She might love its unusualness and want to use it and that'd be fab. If you were suggesting Samphire as a first name I would say no, personally, as she would have to run the gamut of eyebrow raises and smirks every time she introduced herself but as a middle name I don't think she'd be affected in the same way.

suwoo · 01/03/2009 21:42

As you can see from this thread, most non welsh speakers would perhaps mis-pronounce it, would that not really piss you off? Did you grow up in NW or South?

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:44

Eleri Rose is nice.

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:44

I eould have mispronounced it.

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:45

would

preggersplayspop · 01/03/2009 21:46

ScummyMummy, that's a good point. Middle names definitely give you a bit more scope. I didn't know it was a veg until this thread anyway!

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 01/03/2009 21:47

I like Eleri. I think that if you go for Samphire you may hit trouble down the road with your younger DD. Her sister was given the name of a much-loved relative whilst for her you may use a plant name you heard on a TV programme This is the kind of injustice that eats away at the souls of 13-year-old, very hormonal girls and leads to much angyst for their parents...

You've got ages yet. Could you have a look at your family tree and see if there are any names which inspire you?

Sorry that you are both so stressed. I hope things improve for you soon.

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 01/03/2009 21:49

I like all of the other middle names you have suggested, silkcushion!

Gingerbear · 01/03/2009 21:54

Eleri -is nice, but hmm, Ellery Hanley -rugby player and 6th person to be voted off Dancing on Ice?

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:56

Su - Swansea. People saying it wrongly could be a problem.

I had gone off Samphire but now she could be a cheeky mermaid or a young sea witch I like it again. Scummy - you have fabulous imagination!

Agree with Florence though that being named after a vegetable isn't quite as meaningful as being named after my sister.

Family name possibilities - DH's dad had a little sister who died called Flora. He hoped (quite secretly) that's what we were going to call Megan

OP posts:
suwoo · 01/03/2009 21:59

I love Flora, but not Eleri Flora I don't think. I grew up in North Wales.
