Eleri Samphire?

Just typing it I feel like the answer may be yes.

DD2 is due in a few months. DD1 (15mths) is called Megan Juliet. Her second name is after my sister who died.

I wanted another Welsh first name for this little girl, although living in England now, but have been struggling for a middle name.

People have raised eybrows at the name Eleri - is Samphire adding fuel to the fire?

DH and I are prepared for fulla nd franck feedback. What do you really think?

I love Flora too and i think Eleri Flora sounds pretty (Flora as a first name would solve pronunciation issues..). I like the idea of using a name which is really meaningful for your family. My DS's middle name is my brother in law who DH is very close to and I know it means a lot to them both.

hellymelly · 01/03/2009 22:09

Genevre is not a Welsh name, there is no v in the welsh language.

beanieb · 01/03/2009 22:10

Good - had visions that you were rhyming it with Cellery, which is so wrong!

Lulubee · 01/03/2009 22:15

Flora is gorgeous (and still sort of plant related!) and at least it has some meaning. I agree you're going to be hard-pushed to explain the Masterchef connection to a stroppy teenager.

Eleri is pretty, very unusual. I also really like Eleni, is that Welsh too? I have no idea.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2009 22:23

No one non-Welsh has mispronounced Seren yet.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2009 22:24

(but is too similar to Megan)

Biccy · 01/03/2009 22:26

Was about to suggest Sapphire then saw girladboy's post. Not sure about Eleri - how about Lowri, I think that's Welsh?

littlelamb · 01/03/2009 22:28

Samphire sounds like a hobbit

seeker · 02/03/2009 08:01

Or a horse. Imagine a beautiful grey mare called Samphire.

mumoverseas · 02/03/2009 08:45

How about Angharad? A nice welsh name

LuLuBai · 02/03/2009 09:01

Eleri is really pretty. Samphire is a pretty word but people may be a bit about the vegetable thing. How about Saphire or Seraphina for similar sounds.

Eleri sounds like a cockney trying to pronounce Hilary and Samphire is beyone awful.

you clearly have huge doubts about this name yourself which means you aren't in love with it - so, yes, choose something else.

MrsMattie · 02/03/2009 16:03

Eleri is pretty. Samphire is a bit odd.

SamsMama · 02/03/2009 16:25

I'm American and have never heard of Samphire, so I actually think it's really pretty. People name kids after flowers all the time, and then there's Gwyneth Paltrow's Apple, so...why not a vegtable? Plus, as other people said, no one really uses middle names. I think Eleri is quite pretty. I know a few Ellarys, but when I saw this name I assumed it was ee-LAIR-ee. Out of your suggestions, I think Rose is very pretty.

NormaJeanBaker · 02/03/2009 16:31

I know a very odd but cool little boy called Samphire. It suits him.

traceybath · 02/03/2009 16:34

How about menna - welsh and very pretty.

mileniwmffalcon · 02/03/2009 16:36

if you like non what about manon, you could shorten it for a pet name. agree eleri is pretty when pronounced properly, but it probably won't be.

MumOfBaby · 02/03/2009 16:36

Simple Answer- Yes

Tidey · 02/03/2009 16:38

Sapphire you could get away with. Samphire... I don't think so.

TiggyR · 02/03/2009 16:50

Personally I don't think you should name her after a seaweed, but as it's a middle name I suppose it doesn't really matter. I think Sapphire is lovely though, and it is softer sounding that Samphire (not to mention prettier in the flesh!!!)

I'm not fussed about Eleri either way. I love Morwenna, Bronwen, Arwen and Angharad. Not sure whether Arwen counts as yer actual Welsh but it sounds authentic enough!

ZZZen · 02/03/2009 16:53

I have a feeling she will not be eternally grateful to you for that name

screamingabdab · 02/03/2009 16:54

Eleri - Yes!

Samphire - sorry, no!

What about Arwen?

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 02/03/2009 18:33

Angharad is nice
Cordelia is another shakespearean name

BubbaP · 02/03/2009 19:34

Eleri is a really lovely name and would have been on our list, but someone close to us has used it. One problem she has come across is that some of her non-Welsh friends pronounce Eleri in a similar way to "celery" as other posters have pointed out.

Just thought I would add some suggestions for Welsh middle names:

Alys
Angharad
Anwen
Awen
Bethan
Carys
Catrin
Cerys
Ffion
Gwen
Manon
Mared
Megan
Nia
Olwen
Rhian
Rhiannon
Sara
Siân
Sioned
Siwan

HTH!
