I've just received a text to tell me that a friend (of sorts!) has called her poor baby Sloane Anais....WTF??? Am I missing something here or does everyone else agree this is just awful?

ComeWhineWithMe · 08/01/2009 20:44

Well if she likes it ,Anais is ok .

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 08/01/2009 20:51

Lilyloo...do you have a DD called Sloane Anais, perchance?!

Cilit, I hope your friend doesn't have a drawly Essex accent..."Slahooon Uh-naaaaay!"

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 08/01/2009 20:53

Oh dear. Your friend was on here last week. We all told her Sloane Anais was a lovely, unique name

Dozymare · 08/01/2009 21:02

I knew a girl called Sloane growing up. She was lovely and french!

hopsyflop · 08/01/2009 21:19

What is the point of posting this?

You may not like someone else's choice of name. Thats ok. Fortunately we all have different tastes.

But why post such a negative, mean comment on someone else's choice? Just because someone chooses a name (or hairstyle, clothes, whatever) that you happen not to like, so what???? It's their choice, not yours!!! I find it really rude to comment so negatively about someone else's choice.

And no, my children are not called Sloane Anais and I wouldn't chose the names, but I respect other people's choices!

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 08/01/2009 21:25

Oh, hopsyflop! She's posting it because it's fun to laugh at other people!

Lilyloo · 08/01/2009 21:27

No dd not called that Groucho

However been on the recieving end of neg comments about name choice and it's not nice!

thisisyesterday · 08/01/2009 21:29

agree with lily and hopsy.
really hate these "oooh let's all slag off this name for the fun of it2 threads.

I hope your friend doesn't use MN cilitbang.

rubyslippers · 08/01/2009 21:30

Sloane was a character in Ferris Beuller's day off

Anais Nin was a famous (saucy) writer

TBH, i don't think it is that bad

tis a wee bit mean to start a thread like this

lets hope she isn't a Mnetter

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 08/01/2009 22:00

Oh, you guys are far too kind and considerate. I feel horrible now.

(sorry Lil, don't think I've laughed at your name choices but I clearly have laughed at others)

BikeRunSki · 08/01/2009 22:11

Her child, her taste, her choice.

cilitbang · 09/01/2009 09:29

Oh god....yawn yawn, is life that serious?? It was only a lighthearted joke. Of course its the parents choice, any 'unique' names are going to be open to a fair bit of critism....or should we all lie and say "what a beautiful name". Everyone is entitled to an opinion, I have no doubt that people have questioned our choice of names for our children, but who gives a ? its our (the parents)choice. The reason why its so funny is that the person in question would have bitch about everyone's name choices, without a doubt. TBH I like the second name,(apart from if you pronounce it as its spelt) its the first one I just think is a bit 'out there', I'd never heard it before, ever.

Neither name is exactly unheard of and it's a mean spirited thread.

Bluestocking · 09/01/2009 09:36

Anais is OK if it's correctly spelt. Sloane is just stupid.

Bluestocking · 09/01/2009 09:37

D'oh - mean correctly pronounced, as in An-ay-ees. Am stupid myself (but have sensible name).

mysterymoniker · 09/01/2009 09:38

with or without the umlaut?

sounds like a fab posh totty character in a Curtis Sittenfeld novel

nailpolish · 09/01/2009 09:40

cilit, tell us your childrens names and we can all have a good bitch about them, see how you feel

MrsMattie · 09/01/2009 09:41

I like Anais. Sloane is dreadful.

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 09:43

violethill · 09/01/2009 10:09

But she's right isn;t she, and we all know it, even if you won't admit it!!

edam · 09/01/2009 10:12

Anais is fine, it's a real name. (Although I hope they remember the umlaut - I just don't know how to do it here).

But Sloane? As a first name? WTF? It's a SURNAME. Hence Sloane Square in Chelsea. And a term for posh girls. I do think people are entitled to raise their eyebrows at such a bizarre choice.

MrsDoylesMole · 09/01/2009 10:13

Everybody likes different names or has negative associations with a name.I hear of people calling their children very conservative names and shudder but that it their choice and as a rule even if i dislike a name it usually suits the child.
