What is your child called, and what do they GET called?

Everyone spells DS's name wrong, but it is spelt a few different ways so I can forgive it.

Like Sweetkitty my dd3 is called Talia and it has been spelt all the other ways plus my HV and Midwives kept calling her Taylor.
Also same as Lockets have a Saskia dd2 who gets called Sasha really often for some reason.
Even dd1 a straight forward Charlotte got Sharlitt on an xmas card and it had been done by a parent not the child !

stuckinthecorner · 01/01/2009 19:10

my dds name is Lauren. Ive just looked at her Christmas cards (from school friends(Yr 3) and family )and am amazed how many are spelt Lorun. I`ve never noticed before.....

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/01/2009 20:54

DD is Evelyn, spellings this year on Christmas cards included Evelynne, Evelin, Everlyn, Evey and Evy when they cant get the full name!

Pronouncing can be a problem for some people - I pronounce her name "Everlyn" but she gets Eve Lynne a lot.

shortshafe · 02/01/2009 01:10

I don't think any names are safe from this - I'm a claire/clair/clare, but only because my mum told my aunt she wanted to call me Laura, my aunt heard Nora - which put my mum off Laura!!

I've an Isaac, which is spelt Issac by most people, and an Elsie who often gets Elise instead!?

Funnily enough, the child benefit people spelt them Issac and Elise, even though they only had to copy them off their birth certificates .

yawningmonster · 02/01/2009 05:38

shortshaff doesn't it amaze you I never heard of Issac as a spelling before having my son. How do you pronounce yours as this to be honest annoys me more.

Simplysally · 02/01/2009 07:53

There`s an Issac where I work.

My dd is called Phoebe but the most common misspelling is Pheobe. For some reason, people seem to struggle with writing the O before the E and weve often heard Phobe being called out as her name. Its for this reason I didn`t opt to use the spelling Phebe as then it would have been Feebs or worse.

JaneLumley · 02/01/2009 08:20

I have a daughter called Hermione. despite Harry Potter, people still struggle with it, and the health visitor once called her something like Hormone....NB: we shorten it to Mi.

bandgeek · 02/01/2009 12:20

My DD is called Ava. Three letters, two of which are the same - it's not that hard.

Most of the christmas cards received this year, including those from family members had 'Eva' written on them.

She is nearly 3 FGS!

madeindevon2 · 02/01/2009 14:44

funny post.
my son is Freddie. lots of family write cards to Freddy or Fred.
my next door neighbour still calls him frankie despite being told every time its freddie! (it makes me laugh now...she is elderly and english not her 1st language)

MrsNewYear · 02/01/2009 18:09

I really can't understand how people get it wrong. I'm quite badly dyslexic, and so I check each time I right a name that could be tricky which way is right. It drives my husband mad at Christmas!

I have to spell all three of my names - I should have married a Mr Smith! It's a big concern with choosing a name for madam (I'm 32 weeks gone). My first name I actually use a different spelling than my birth certificate - 'ie' rather than 'y' (have done since I was 4) but my brother still insists on using the 'proper' spelling. Half our cards have my name spelt wrongly on them - from hubby's work mates etc., which I don't mind too much (even though I make the effort to get it right) but it bugs me that my brother can't get his head around my name...

TheFallenMadonna · 02/01/2009 18:19

My children have never had their names mispelt as far as I know. At least not by anyone above the age of 5. There is something to be said for your traditional, phonetic names.

worleywinterwonderland · 02/01/2009 18:33

my ds1 is connor, the different ways people spell it never fails to amaze me.
he gets conna, cona, conner, connar. its not that hard is it?!!

LIZS · 02/01/2009 18:34

dd's has at least 3 variant spellings, with several abbreviations - she is called at school one we never use ! You'd have thought I 'd have learnt having had mine constantly misspelled and alternatively abbreviated which drove me mad as a child.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 02/01/2009 20:04

I thought Evelyn was traditional!

Mind you, my name is Emma and I get alsorts of spellings, best was Emmer. My DH gets his spelt incorrectly too, which makes me laugh.

Goober · 02/01/2009 20:08

Mine is Gina. Nobody can ever say it or spell it properly.

Goober · 02/01/2009 20:09

Just to add to their confusion, my surname is also very italian.

3 DCs have unusual names they get it too.

cyteen · 02/01/2009 20:28

I have one of those names that ends in -a, but of which there is also a version that ends in -e. The VAST MAJORITY of people I encounter on a casual basis i.e. GPs, telephone helpline people, HVs, MWs, work people and so forth, call me by the -e version. This is often despite having seen my name written down (in emails, on forms) and/or having asked me to spell it out for form-filling or whatever. It drives me FUCKING BESERK.

Oh, and the short version is constantly misheard as Lucy, Phoebe, any number of things. And also misspelled all the time, although this I can forgive for the sake of my sanity as there are several legitimate variations.

dizzydixies · 02/01/2009 22:33

DD3 is Dylan and my father insists on calling her Daryl?!?!?!? wtf?!?!

CDMforever · 02/01/2009 22:41

My daughter's name is Arabella and, rather sweetly I think, a toddler friend of her older brother calls her Tikkabilla! God help anyone who calls her Arab!

Alishanty · 03/01/2009 15:02

We have a Solomon which regularly gets spelled Soloman. We also have an Esme who gets called Esmay and gets it spelled Esma/Esmie/esmi. What annoys me is the people who repeatedly get it wrong. Its not hard to note how a person spells/says their name and remember it for next time.

garEthsmum · 03/01/2009 15:09

Some people spell DS's name Garath, instead of Gareth. Which annoys me.

Mamazon · 03/01/2009 15:10

Dd is Eleanor. we get so many variations from ellena to Elana and most in between.

MmeJaffaB · 03/01/2009 15:17

Even Dh can't spell dd1's name. The school asked me how it was spelt as dh kept writing it differently to me on her lunch tickets....

It's Madison, dh always wrote Maddison. Half the family do too tbh. Confusing to them and him obviously because we call her Maddie most of the time.

dd2 is Jorja......don't even go there, my own fault I know that now, lol!

Tigerschick · 03/01/2009 15:18

I think the point that seems to annoy most of us is people who are serial offenders - those who have been told but repeatedly get it wrong.
Last year I taugh a Cassy (pronounced Casey), a Sarah (pronounced Sara) and a Marie (pronounced Marr-ee as opposed to Ma-ree) but after the first time I was told, I remembered how to say them. It's just good manners!

MmeJaffaB · 03/01/2009 15:37

I keep telling Dh. He is a serial offender. lol
