What is your child called, and what do they GET called?

Everyone spells DS's name wrong, but it is spelt a few different ways so I can forgive it.

DS2 = Tristan. Often called 'Christian' by other children, and mispelt as 'Tristian' by some adult at school.

DS1= Daniel, once mispelt as "Denial" (LOL) by his Bangladeshi playworker at playgroup.

I don't mind any of it, though (since DSs themselves don't mind, why should I?)

ketal · 30/12/2008 16:19

Yes, all the time.

DD1 is Eloise, and it is often spelt Elloise, and also Ellaouise??? Also shortened to Ella (which we're cool with) and Ellie (which we're not!)

DD2 is Katherine. Again, people always get that wrong - usually spelt with the C or Kathryn. Never Katharine though! People also shorten her name - mostly to Katie. Hubby and I have lots of nicknames for her, but now at 2, she seems to have decided that she likes Katie (which is a shame as that's the one I like least!) But her name, her decision!

People also get my name wrong all the time though, and always have so its never bothered me.

Have given my children names that you cant really pronounce wrong, even though the spelling is sometimes wrong. This is largely down to the fact that my names Keeley and have spent most of my life being called Kelly, Kayleigh,Kylie etc. Very annoying!

boogeek · 30/12/2008 17:54

Tamsin gets Tasmin. All the time. Is that even a name?

muggglewump · 30/12/2008 17:55

Yes, all the time.
My daughter's name is Niamh.

It's to be expected since we don't live in Ireland and we're used to it now. I loved the name though and insisted it was spelled correctly and not phonetically.

bohemianbint · 30/12/2008 17:56

Absolutely everyone, and I would tell you their names but they're that random it would blow my anonymity completely if anyone I knew was on here...

walkingprimrose · 31/12/2008 00:41

thisisyesterday -

my ds is also officially called Gabriel, although we now call him by his middle name.... This is largely due to the same horrendous experience of people calling him Gabrielle all the time... At the Doctors etc. Even some friends would call him Gabrielle even if I'd just called him Gabriel in the preceeding sentence. It did my head in! My town just was not ready for such an ancient, well known, historical, biblical name!! I ended up changing his name because of this as I didn't want his life to blighted by it. Sometimes I think I should have stuck it out....

What is wrong with these fools????!!!

dramaqueen72 · 31/12/2008 00:47

oh yes, DS has an unusual name but mostly people get it right, DD however is Mollie. and gets Molly instead all the time. I dont mind, its to be expected, altho when close family do it I am abit miffed!
my name -melanie- is never spelt right however! i've had some weird versions in the past!

3isthemagicnumber · 31/12/2008 11:21

all the time-
ds2 is Louis which is often spelt Louie or Luis on cards etc. Dont mind that at all but do get bit miffed when people call him Lewis and have had some even insist that we have his name wrong not them........

unfitmother · 31/12/2008 11:30

The Gabriel/Gabrielle is pure ignorance.
I have to say, I wouldn't have a clue how to spell Kaeden, so I'd ask.

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 31/12/2008 11:40

I had to laugh when DD was born and we named her Rebecca. MIL wanted it put in the newspaper and did it as a surprise for us... the newspaper spelled it Rebecca and MIL got all upset that they'd got it wrong - she thought it was spelled Rebekkah!

I was SO pleased the paper had got it right, I'd have been really narked and not kept the cuttings if it had been wrong...

muminthecity · 31/12/2008 11:41

DD is Daisy, I never thought when I chose it that anyone would have any trouble spelling/pronouncing it, but it seems I was wrong. Ex MIL has always spelt it either Daisie or Daisey, NEVER Daisy despite me telling her a good few times . She has even bought her some personalised tat stuff for her bedroom, the type you order from crappy catalogues over the phone, half of which has Daisey on it, the other half has Daisie . Other people have also used those spellings in cards. It often gets misheard as Stacey or Tracey, but that's easy enough to correct!

Clarissimo · 31/12/2008 11:51

DS1 is Samuel. Or Samule as my adored best mate spells it LOL. DS2 is Stirling- or, as many a person (understandably?) chooses to write, Sterling.

IIRC we had a Sebastienne as well this year in our cards (ds4), but as yet Harold hasnt been spelled in any other way.

LiffeyValleyOfTheDolls · 31/12/2008 13:43

I was looking at the xmas cards and about 50% had one of their names wrong.

AnarchyAunt · 31/12/2008 13:53

DD's dad spells her name wrong in the rare cards he sends

Helsbels4 · 31/12/2008 13:54

I can understand it if you or your dc have an unusual name or spelling because it is hard to know which Clare/Claire Clair or Katherine/Catherine etc you are writing for but family really should know. My ds is called Ciaran (traditional Irish spelling) but despite writing it really clearly in cards, we had to actually point it out to dh's step-sister. His friends at school spell it all sorts of ways

Harriet, which I thought was as straightforward as you can get, was Harriett, Harriot and Harriette on birth and Christmas cards. Expecting a fresh lot of nonsense for birthday next week...

Clarissimo · 31/12/2008 15:59

I am a Clair and yes I can quite understan it. Indeed I vary between Clair and Claire myself ( a legacy of my teen years). Bt Samuel? How can that be spelld rong LOL (although it does make me LO as Samule puts me in mind of an ass)

chocolateorange · 31/12/2008 16:02

On a similar note to dashboard, my daughter is Mia and is constantly called Maya. Even by people who we've known for years. My boss for example has called her Maya for 2 years. After correcting her for the first month or so, it starts to get really embarrassing.

PS dash, love Taya. Wish I'd gone with it.

TwoIfBySea · 31/12/2008 16:06

Dts1 is called Niall, it gets spelled in some interesting ways. Including once by a family member who wrote Nile and I wondered if she thought he was named after the river!

And of course there is the fact that here in Scotland Niall can get pronounced as Neil but we went with the Irish pronounciation.

My other dts is Adam, can't go far wrong with that!

Phoenix · 31/12/2008 16:10

My ds is Lewis. Loads of people spell it Louis It's not even the same bloody name.

thecalpollady · 31/12/2008 16:15

My DDs have french names but are english too iyswim. People still spell their names wrong. I'm shocked to find that DD1's best friend still spells it wrong after knowing each other for 2 years. That really bugs me now cos it's plain laziness.

I don't regret what I've done but hadn't realised how lazy and ignorant some people are when it comes to spelling other peoples name once they get to know them.

claireybaubles · 31/12/2008 16:16

DH alway gets called Gabrielle too

DD is Caiela and we get a lot of Caiella. Variations in the Christmas cards this year also include Kyella, Kyla, Kyler and Cylia.

DS is Douggie and people often spell it with one g, we have also had Duggie.

Claire is usually spelt wrong too
