What is your child called, and what do they GET called?

Everyone spells DS's name wrong, but it is spelt a few different ways so I can forgive it.

DD2 is Amelie (known as Millie) but a good friend of mine recently introduced her to someone else as Armani. WTF???

minxofmancunia · 31/12/2008 16:24

dd is maia pronounced my-ah but loads of adults outside the family call her mia (mee-ya) grrrrr bugs me!

All the 2 years olds in her nursery group can pronounce it though.

We also get lots of cards addressed to mia and miai ???!

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 31/12/2008 16:35

ds is Isaac...how far wrong can you go with that I thought when naming him but no not only do a considerable number of people misspell it as
Issac but they mispronounce it too! We say Eye Zach
They say Eye Sick. Argh

tomanykidstoname · 01/01/2009 04:44

my name is alona alone--a n its never been right in 30 yrs lol n my dd1 is kyra gets kiera kirah n a million others n dd2 is jenna n everyone sends cards with jennifer or genna there not hard names

ProfYaffle · 01/01/2009 07:02

dd2 is Xanthe, we often get Zanthe (understandable) but Zanti and Zantia annoy me, we've even had Nancy which is just amusing. My name is far more pedestrian but even that gets mis-spelt all the time.

misscathcart · 01/01/2009 07:49

My DD is Amy and often gets cards written to Aimee and Ami. I always thought Amy is the traditional way of spelling this name is it not?

choosyfloosy · 01/01/2009 08:40

ds has a name like Noel, we didn't think there would be any pronunciation issues but I find it much more annoying than I thought I would that some people pronounce it no-ELL whereas I prefer, roughly, Nole. But that's just fussy on my account.

at Gabriel/Gabrielle! Great names for boy and girl but pretty different surely!

It's interesting that a close relative, whose name is Charlotte, used to get called Sharon and Caroline all the time, but now that Charlotte has been in the top 10 for so many years, it is finally being spelt and pronounced right. I do think that people don't listen much to other people's names, though.

Wolfblass · 01/01/2009 08:41

Georgia-Mae

She is nearly 5 and prefers her full name, although we do shorten it ourselves to Georgie and George.

I wouldn't mind but she gets Georgina and Georgiana, from SIL and BIL

She also gets all sorts of spellings Giorgia, even Giorgio????? and Mae is often spelt as May...

Step dd is Annabel and more often than not gets Annabelle....

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 01/01/2009 08:42

My name is a bog standard one, but it can legitimatly be spelt in 2 different ways (like Claire/Clare).
I agree that, with people who don't know you, it's easy to forgive as they have a 50/50 chance of getting it right ... they could however ask, or is that too shocking??

DD's name is a traditional one, too. No problems with spelling or pronunciation. We use the diminutive of it and she's going to spend her life saying "with an ie, not a y!" just like me ... ah well.

I think it's a different matter with family and friends.
I've known DH all-but 10 years and most of his family still spell my name wrong. I'm not holding out much hope tho as MIL is still waiting for her MIL to spell her name (Carol, without an e) properly ... after 43 years

NoShitSherlock · 01/01/2009 08:57

My DD is called Ciara and gets mis-spelt all the time and mispronounced. Some of them are Keira, Kiera, Ceira, Ciera.

kidsx4 · 01/01/2009 09:31

My ds name has 2 spelling's and a lot of people have spelt it wrong in xmas cards this year, even people that are quite close. His name is Buddy.

petitmaman · 01/01/2009 10:03

dd is sophie. we have had it spelt sofy a lot. no need.

glitteryb6 · 01/01/2009 10:17

ds is Evan, we've had everything from Euan, Ewan, Eevan, Ivan(?), Kevin, Even, Evion(??)

EachPeachPearMum · 01/01/2009 10:18

LOL at misspelling 'Buddy'!!! How on earth? Poor lad.
I think it just goes to show- whatever you name your children, some bozo will get it wrong!
DD's name is spelled perfectly phonetically, but is uncommon though, and people frequently think it ends in an 'a' instead of 'id'. It is complicated further by our unusual surname- also phonetic- that throws people completely.

Sycamoretree · 01/01/2009 10:24

A lovely little girl at DD's nursery is called Honor and the the teaching assistant has pronounced her name sounding the H for the entire first term so that now all the other kids are mis-pronouncing it....

Can't believe the teacher hasn't said anything to her.

snuffyp · 01/01/2009 10:28

my dd is neve but if someone looks to read her name out they look at me as if to say what????is neve so hard!???makes me think i picked some kind of weirdo name! i did,nt go for the niamh version thought that would be a nightmare but she gets neave and other things put in cards

4andnotout · 01/01/2009 10:33

Mine are always getting their names spelt wrong, but poor dd2 everyone calls her ALLANAH when her name is ELANA. Dp's family just call her Lana which i hate!

Hulababy · 01/01/2009 11:18

Yes, people spell DD's name wrong.

We spell her name Mollie but often others write Molly

Both acceptable spellings so generally it doesn't bother me. I just crrect people or spell it out for them if giving her name for the first time. Irks me a bit with closer family/friends, but DD is 6y now and most get it right after this length of time. I know they don't do it on purpose.

Hulababy · 01/01/2009 11:26

My name is Claire and I get one of 3 spellings generally. I usually spell it out when telling people the first time.

wombleprincess · 01/01/2009 16:58

Honor and it gets spelt Honour. but since thats logical i try not to be too precious about it!

alicecrail · 01/01/2009 17:04

My dd is Daisy but some people always spell it Daisey, I thought it would be quite an easy one

faeriemoo · 01/01/2009 17:07

alice I also have a Daisy, who gets Daisey or Daisie from MIL (goes without saying really!).

I also have a Lola, who gets Loola or Lolla.

It isn't frickin' hard people!

SnowOfHands · 01/01/2009 18:13

ProfYaffle, your girls have beautiful names.

My name's Rhonda and I get Ronda, Roda, Wanda, Rhondda. People also pronounce it incorrectly- GPs etc. DH's aunt has known me for 10 years and gets it wrong every time.

Don't think I've ever seen my name suggested on a baby thread.
