I love the name Cosmo for a boy, but it is just me??? Do you think it is dreadful/cruel/ridiculous?

Your thoughts please!

Tummytickler no I don't think you're at risk of there being two Cosmos in your son's class!!

There could well be a Milo/Bruno/Jago/Hugo in your son's wider circle though, growing up.

I do think though that ten yrs from now, the o trend will sound a bit dated. Hope that doesn't sound rude. I love boys' names that end in o! I wanted to call my son Hugo but I am not wealthy enough and Bruno was a really strong contender for my son. He was so close to being a Bruno.

I think in 10 yrs time, Leila, Lila, Lola, Lily will all sound very 2005-2010. Ykwim? Not a bad thing per se... just particular to a time.

tummytickler · 16/04/2009 21:22

Margot - oh i agree with Leila, Lila, Lola, Lily etc - cant move for them round these parts!!
I dont actually have a Cosmo at the mo, but it is one of the few names that dh and i like. Although i try and go for names that arent going to be very 'of a time'. I fear i may have failed with Iris, Eli, Pearl and Amos. I thought they were classic and underused but a lot of people seem to mention them now. Off topic i know, but do you think my kids names will be really dated in a 'Kevin and Tracy' kind of way?

Bruno is lovely btw - adore it massively!
And i know two Jagos!

Cosmosis · 17/04/2009 16:42

I love it. DH loves it too, but it doesn't really flow with our surname. So we used it on the cat instead (and yes my mn name is a nickname for the cat!)

(ps how can it reminding people of Kramer be a bad thing??? He's one of the funniest characters on tv!)

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 17/04/2009 18:13

oooh what lovely names tummytickler...

I love Seinfeld and anything and everyone about it. SO funny.

spicemonster · 17/04/2009 18:19

My DN was named after Cosmo Kramer. And there is nothing at all wrong with that. My DS is named after Elliot Stabler in Law & Order SVU which is not remotely amusing

hopes · 17/04/2009 18:20

I like that name, but I also like the name Briggs.

tummytickler · 17/04/2009 19:52

Cosmo Kramer is very cool and very funny, but the actor who played him recently made some awful racist comments on stage and i think that he is now very unpopular because of it although people say he is actually a bit mad!
But if you stick to Seifeld, he is funny as hell - just dont watch the stand up!

JuxaLOTmoreChocolate · 17/04/2009 19:57

I like it - we have at least one Cosmo per generation in my family!

KateByrne · 22/06/2016 02:04

My husband has a boy called Cosmo from his first marriage and I must be honest when we first met and he told me his son is called Cosmo but I thought he was joking then when I realised he was not I thought it was cruel and truly mean on poor lad but then I met him, he was four he is seven now, and he is exactly how you expect a Cosmo to be completely mental but rather lovely. But I would still never choose it.

izzybella33 · 27/09/2020 00:29

why would it be cruel or ridiculous? i love it! xx

Cado12 · 27/09/2020 00:39

It’s very common amongst the upper classes so if you’re not in that particular class, I’d avoid.
Reminds me too much of the old kids tv show when I was little called Cosmo & Dibs! Or a ladies magazine Confused

Kanaloa · 27/09/2020 02:05

I’m not too keen, it’s the name of an all you can eat buffet place near where my mother lives so I tend to think of that.

ZOMBIE THREAD

it's over 10 years old

🚨 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨

Lovely name though

MikeUniformMike · 27/09/2020 07:42

I like it and Cosima is lovely.

Lavendersy · 27/09/2020 11:47

so if you’re not in that particular class, I’d avoid

Ridiculous comment and only serves to strengthen these silly stereotypes.

Anyone, from any 'class' can use any name!!

ZOMBIE THREAD

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 28/09/2020 21:09

I know this is a zombie thread but I’ve found it interesting that

  1. Felix and Jasper are considered pretentious? They’re suggested all the time on here
  1. The suggestion that Lily would be very “2005”, when it’s still going strong in the charts now.
user1493494961 · 28/09/2020 21:25

Cosmo Smallpiece (I'm showing my age).

JanewaysBun · 29/09/2020 20:58

My (imaginary) ds2 will be Cosmo or Duncan.

MotherOfTheCoz · 27/04/2022 18:08

Howdy, y'all! [Or "How are you all?" for the rest of the English-speaking world.] My son's name is Cosmo Theophilus. He's older than Scarlett J's son with her husband Colin Jost. They got the exact same reaction we did when family members suggested, "Cosimo," instead of Cosmo. eye roll
He will graduate from college in June and he loves his name! ❤️ It's not boring, according to him when he was a youngster, and he agrees with that 😉 sentiment now.

It's easy to spell and to remember. He receives quite a bit of positive feedback about his name.

Although "Cosmo" is not a name found on many mugs, I am proud that I stood by it since he loves it.
That's especially important to me because of my daughter's reaction to her name. Even though she met and married Alexander Francis, who goes by Sander, she changed her name from Frances Alixandra.

Something to consider, friends 🤔!

user3199 · 27/04/2022 19:53

Not my taste but definitely don't think it's cruel! I don't think it will stand out as unusual to today's kids - as others have said, names ending in o are popular at the moment.

It's got quite posh connotations to me - similar vibe to Jasper, Tarquin, Quentin, Rupert etc. but I actually prefer it to all those names.

Justlovedogs · 27/04/2022 19:57

Siriusmewandtinseltoo · 14/12/2008 09:38

I like it. Although Little Cosmo in Jilly Coopers books did put me off a bit!

Glad I'm not the only one that thought of that reference.

ArtVandalay · 27/04/2022 20:01

I know a little Cosmo. I love it. It’s another Hugo/Arlo type name (and I know 2 of each) but less common. In popularity, I mean.

dontknowhow2help · 27/04/2022 20:03

Ridiculous

helloitsnotmeanymore · 27/04/2022 20:03

Love it .. Dh would never consider that type of "posh" name. I also liked Hugo.
