I love the name Cosmo for a boy, but it is just me??? Do you think it is dreadful/cruel/ridiculous?

Your thoughts please!

It's my nephew's name and I love it

noonki · 10/12/2008 20:32

he would be eaten alive here!

shitehawk · 10/12/2008 20:37

I think it's awful. Sorry and all that, but I think it's pretentious and girly.

CoteDAzur · 10/12/2008 20:39

Cruel.

June2009 · 10/12/2008 20:45

I love it, dh is also vetoing it

Jbck · 10/12/2008 20:46

Really like it. Might be a wee bit poncetastic in some areas but who cares

janeite · 10/12/2008 20:49

I don't like it, sorry. I met a small Cosmo in Cafe Nero once. He was not pleasant and his uber-yummy-mummy was letting him ponce around and stare at everybody whilst she talked handbags with her friend and issued the occasional "Cosmo darling, would you like your babycino now". Sorry - my view of the name has been coloured by this!

TheCrackFox · 10/12/2008 20:55

Love it, but it is quite a posh name. However, if you have your sights set on Oxford/Cambridge it might be a good idea.

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 20:58

I think all the dons will think it's poncetastic too. If you're really posh you'll stick with things like James.

hairymcleary · 14/12/2008 09:35

Haven't read the rest of the posts, but my sister suggested Cosmo for DS2 (due in 7 weeks)- I told her no way, due to Cosmo Landesman (the journalist... I can't think of the name Cosmo without linking it with Landesman for some reason) and forevermore, my bump has been referred to as Cosmo Landesman. (No real opinion on the name itself btw, just not right for me)

Siriusmewandtinseltoo · 14/12/2008 09:38

I like it. Although Little Cosmo in Jilly Coopers books did put me off a bit!

annasmami · 14/12/2008 10:11

I don't understand why any child would tease another based on their name.... to them its just a name.... OK, if they were called poopoohead or something that might be teaseworthy, but why would a child find Cosmo funny?

Nancy66 · 14/12/2008 10:55

because when you're a kid it's all about fitting in if you have an unusual name, wear a turban, walk on crutches, have a large birthmark etc it singles you out.

all very cruel but some kids can be.

annasmami · 14/12/2008 11:11

and do you think that children really think that having the name Cosmo is as 'different' as walking on crutches or having a large birthmark?

Why would a child find the name Cosmo any different than Jack, John or Connor? I mean there is nothing unusual about the sound of the name, is there?

Nancy66 · 14/12/2008 11:22

Actually, I said earlier on in the thread that I liked the name - i was just addressing the point you made about whether one child would tease another over a name and, yes, I think they would.

I know a Cosmo, but he lives in Totnes

lottiejenkins · 14/12/2008 12:17

Sirius........i thought the same thing about Little Cosmo in Jilly Cooper...it was the first thing i thought of when i saw the thread title!!

warthog · 14/12/2008 12:19

don't like

annasmami · 14/12/2008 12:37

Maybe we (adults) should become more accepting of less common names. Do we really want our children to be so shallow and tease someone just because they have a feature that is a little different? I wonder if it is insecurity that makes such adults make rude comments...

warthog · 14/12/2008 14:07

i think children just accept it. they pick up on what their parents' attitudes are though.

Grublin · 14/12/2008 14:11

Cosmo & wanda from Fairly odd parents springs to mind.

mickeymistletoe · 14/12/2008 14:31
