Obviously it's my own fault for choosing the 'one million and 3 baby names' book instead of a more sensible '1000 baby names that are good and you might actually use' book, but COME ON! Some of the names in here are just so ridiculous it's crazy....

Frigg
Schmoopie
Candida
Hitler
Abacus
Flirt
Butter

I can't honestly believe someone would go through this book and think 'hmmm, Sarah, Samantha, Scarlett... Schmoopie. Yes, Schmoopie, the perfect name for our dear daughter.'

And I once looked after a little baby Chlamydia poor foreign parents didn't speak english very well and wanted a name that sounded pretty when you said it

no - we're still on the topic as I was literally on my way out of the front door this morning when I read your post - trying to make sure I caught a bus, I have only just got back......hence the reason that it took longer for me to type a full response.

oh and btw - Yehudi Menhuin was a fantastic man, the way he managed to get our (already excellent) school orchestra to play was out of this world.

And he was even very nice to me when I barged into a room (which I thought was empty) - to find him sitting there drinking a cup of tea and having a break from the madness of the school

AnathemaDevice - I did not actually say you were racist but I do think you (and not just you) need to be a bit careful about the things you post. For your information, in certain cultures, it is custom for a boy to have his father's sir name and a girl to have her mothers - this will happen with our baby - so if we have a girl and named her Shakira she would have my sir name which is oridnary and British. Therefore you can not assume anything - you don't really know, you are just guessing. I hate these threads. It always comes down to a race/class thing really because anything which is not classicly British is regarded as being ridiculous or worth having a pop at. And that is really unfair and unjust.

Melmanof3, I get my name being anglicised whenever it's said. If I bother telling them the correct pronounciation, I often get kindly 'corrected' (as in, you're in our country now, and this is how we say it ).

I often used to have correspondence with someone called Comfort Golightly. Once had to pick something up from that office and was surpised to discover that Comfort was a man! Don't know why, but Comfort Golighlty is such a "soft" gilry name!

Beauregard · 01/11/2008 22:51

MadamAnt · 02/11/2008 09:00

Friend of mine taught a Dazzyboy. My first thought was 'There's a name you'll only ever hear on one side of a magistrates bench' (Which probably makes me a snob, but hey ho. Dazzy had a sister called baby. She was in her twenties at the time. I blame Dirty Dancing.

Another friend claimed that 20 years ago he taught a girl called Herelieth, pronounced her-el-ee-eth. Parents found it on a gravestone apparently and thought it was pretty.

Dh came across a Bronson, who had a brother Rocky. We never found out if there was a little Tyson at home too.

I used to do dance classes with an October.
Someone vile who used to live near me has named their daughter Lacie-Lou.

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 12:53

I was staying in a small Spanish town a few years ago. A woman who lived nearby was a big fan of American movies. Around meal times you would hear her yelling down the alley for her son Kevincostner.

2luvlykid, I remember a Petronella! Would she be about 40-41?

There are at least 2 Pocohontas's in Dublin as well, aged about 12.

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 13:42

There is quite a well known Petronella. She worked for Boris Johnson when he edited the 'Sextator' and was rumoured to have had an affair with him.

It would be quite pretty if it didn't sound so like Petrol.

chipmonkey · 04/11/2008 13:53

I actually envied that Petronella her name! It sounded a lot more princessy than mine!
