What about 'Lucy' but with 'Lux' for short?

Hi,

We really like the name Lux but it doesn't really have a long version. It is from the same origin/route as the name Lucy which we also like so we are toying with the idea of having Lucy as the full name but using Lux as the nickname. What do you think?

Thanks

Love Lucy but not so keen on Lux (makes me think Luxembourg).

However, I do like having an 'x' in the name so why not?

findtheriver · 25/10/2008 18:04

Lux means 'light' in Latin I think, so seems a rather strange choice given that you're not living in Ancient Rome. Lucy is far prettier

lulumama · 25/10/2008 18:05

no-one will ever shorten lucy to lux.. so you will have to call her lux all the time if you want people to use it as her name/nickname

why can;t you just call her lux?

i think there was a character called Lux in the book, 'the virgin suicides'

HTH

Lux is soap powder. Like calling someone Daz - which people do but I'm fairly sure this isn't the image you are going for...

DD was initially lucy and is now legally named lulu.lulu really suits her, she would have been a good scarlett too or anything else feisty !

findtheriver · 25/10/2008 18:08

If you're just using it as a shortening, it'll be spoken rather than written won't it, so I expect most people would think of it as 'Lucks', eg a bit like using 'Lucky' as a nickname and then shortening it.
Of course, you can give any child any nickname, it's up to you (and btw far more up them/their peers as they get older!) but it's just a thought. If I heard someone call out 'Lux' I'd think it was 'Lucks' IYSWIM

poshbloodencrustedwellies · 25/10/2008 18:10

Another Lucy here, heard of lux as in light but it sounds a odd name for a child imo.

girl784 · 25/10/2008 18:10

Hiya,

Thanks for the feedback so far. Yes, both Lux and Lucy are from the latin for 'light' which I quite like really.

We would use Lux ourselve all the time, but thought that perhaps she might like a more common, regular name like Lucy to use in more formal circumstances eg jobs etc.

So this might actually be an ok name? (its taken ages to come up with one I like)

I have a scarlett Lulu, she is very fiesty

RustyBear · 25/10/2008 18:13

I know a girl called Lucy who is known as Lux to her teenage friends - that's how I've seen it spelled on MSN anyway, but they say 'Lukes'

She was actually christened Lucinda, but her parents always called her Lucy - they now hate what her friends call her...

lulumama · 25/10/2008 18:13

i love the name. DH said absolute NO.

we ummed and aahed over changing DDs name legally to Lulu. But figured she has been called it for so long, and no-one ever calls her Lucy , and we wanted her to be registered at school as Lulu that we would change it. and if she absolutely hates it and is not being taken seriously in later life, she can change it back.

poshbloodencrustedwellies · 25/10/2008 18:18

I always get called Luce, never once has anyone called me lux/lukes,odd nickname from a pretty standard name.

girl784 · 25/10/2008 18:23

DH and I discussing and think we might just be brave and abandon Lucy and just go for Lux.

Really appreciate the feedback - not looking for a name that everyone loves, but glad no one has said anything really mean (yet!!).

So, next question then is what middle name might go with Lux? We think perhaps something with 2 syllables?

Lux is the name of a soap.

AbbeyA · 25/10/2008 18:31

Lucy is lovely and doesn't need to be shortened-especially to soap!

I like the initials L.J. so perhaps a two-syllable name beginning with 'J'?

go for it !!

serena was another of my girl names..

girl784 · 25/10/2008 18:37

Thanks, keep the ideas coming!

Can't say it bothers me that it is the same as the soap, plus hoping to move abroad in a few years and I don't think that brand is over there.

How about Imperial Leather with erm, Impel for short?

Lucy is lovely but I don't think Lux works TBH.

There was indeed a Lux in The Virgin Suicides, it wasn't short for anything though.

IMO, as a shortening, it is closer to Alexa, Alexandra than Lucy, as you can say them in different ways, making the shortening more likely.
