Which names do you predict will go rancid in a few years, like Sharon and Tracy did?

I am not saying I don't like these names...but some names get too popular and then they start to smell a bit and seem naff

For girls:

Jade
Ruby? It's the second most popular girl naem nowadays
Aimee
Anything-Mae

For boys:

Rhys
Jayden
Logan

How can someone claim that a name will go rancid? How ridiculous. Names just come and in out of vogue thats all you hear them a lot for a while then they quieten down. My daughters name happened to be the most popular girls name when she was born and continued to be for 3 years. I certainly do not think that because it then wasn't that it somehow went stale lol.

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 21:57

ive not taken these names from official stats, just names i associate with those age groups.

cbmummy · 30/07/2008 21:57

Names simply come full circle and pick up different variations on the way that is all.

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 21:59

Why do we all find names so interesting, its definately a female thing isnt it.

babyelephant · 30/07/2008 22:25

Loriycs.. are you a name analyst?! I totally agree with your "typical names through the ages" post.

Have just caught up with this thread and fwiw a name that is No 1 on my girls names list (am currently pg) has come up TWICE as potentially rancid and I was not in the least bit offended!

If someone loves the name they've chosen for a DC then a random person's opinion on the interweb should hardly shake that conviction, should it?! It's not a personal insult! It's like someone saying they don't like red cars, or persian cats, or new build houses - so what if someone doesn't like what I like? (not that I actually have a red car or a persian cat or a new build house, but ya see my point).

LT, I am pleased you revealed your name as I was guessing: Denise, Kimberley, Beverley, Julie, Jackie or Fiona. (not for being naff, just for being popular 70's). Although one or two are a bit naff come to mention it .

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 22:32

Attention-seeking and ruck-starting thread - big yawn.

"I think people with gentrified MN names are fuckwits - only being flippant, no offence meant, OK?"

i am highly offended lmao at this comment!!

herladyship · 30/07/2008 23:05

Wow they're so nice to each other on that other website!

cbmummy · 01/08/2008 10:11

Just noticed the comments regarding a member going onto another forum and commenting on this thread. I think that you will see that the person in question certainly did make her feelings known earlier on in the thread. She hasn't gone and slagged anyone off behind their backs by the looks of it. I do note, however, that no one actually replied to her. Seems a bit of pot and kettle really.

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 10:13

is is you!!

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 10:14

Here is a fun way to waste time:

www.babynamewizard.com/voyager

It shows you the popularity of names in the USA since the 1880s. You can see that the names that are "date-stamped" are the ones that are extremely popular for only a short period of time. The classics are the names that are never off the radar, but never get too popular.

Of course this is all based on US stats, but it is still interesting.

edam · 01/08/2008 10:52

Blimey, ds's Welsh name is apparently the 40th most popular in the US! I had no idea...

cbmummy · 01/08/2008 11:01

Both my kids names are doing well then number 17 and 34 i think it said. Not rancid yet then lol

lizinthesticks · 01/08/2008 11:43

Whoah. That thing rules.

Comerscroft · 01/08/2008 16:13
