Which names do you predict will go rancid in a few years, like Sharon and Tracy did?

I am not saying I don't like these names...but some names get too popular and then they start to smell a bit and seem naff

For girls:

Jade
Ruby? It's the second most popular girl naem nowadays
Aimee
Anything-Mae

For boys:

Rhys
Jayden
Logan

Ha ha ha. John is very respectable and classic in comparison to my name and to add insult to injury my parents gave me the middle name of JAYNE, which compounds it. Jane is quite nice. But Jayne???? Do I care that I sound like a particularly cheesy florists, though? No I don't, and it doesn't seem to have held me back. If anyone is offended by this thread in the manner of Slubber's suggesting, sorry but I think they're daft!

I think most people are very protective of their lo's names and unless they've started a name thread, probably don't want to hear that it will be naff in 10 years time.

Flum · 29/07/2008 17:06

Where is Suzywong sying

" has this thing kicked off yet?"

Ledodgy · 29/07/2008 17:06

My middle name is Jane too..

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 17:07

Not outing myself on here, Fio! No way. Just think of a selection of the cheesiest names of the 1970s and it's going to be one of them.

Sorry Slubber, I don't know where you're coming from. Sharon and Tracy have gone off and I am wondering which ones will have turned ten years from now. My favourite cousin is called Tracy actually. She'd laugh (hmm, my family didn't excel with the animg lark I must say - my sister has one of the naffest names of the 1960s!)

LadyT

think of it this way

You are out somewhere in a cafe, having a nice cup of tea.

At the table next to you are some women with their children having a nice cup of tea.

Everyone is having a nice cup of tea.

You overhear that one of the children's names is Aimee.

In a terribly loud voice, so all the cafe can hear you say

"hey I wonder if Aimee is getting to popular, I wonder if it will get so popular it will start to smell a bit and seem naff?"

Aimees mother turns around and shoves her vanilla slice in your "having a bit of fun face" and tells you to fuck off.

You respond by saying she is being daft! (with an exclamation mark!)

Can you see how that might happen?

Ah, but Slubber, if someone said it in my hearing and my child was called Aimee I wouldn't give a monkey's bum. That's their opinion and they are entitled to it, non? I'd think "Pooh, more fool them!" (if I personally loved the name). If people don't want to hear what people think of names, and I have heard names called a lot worse than rancid, they should be lurking on the Fluffy Bunnies thread instead.

No, Claire was very popular it's true - was the most popular name at my school, along with Sarah, both of which are enviable tasteful in comparison to mine!

well imo the names that will go out of fashion not rancid are possibly

Britney

er... can't think of any more

not very helpful was I?!

posieflump · 29/07/2008 17:17

oh yes in my year at secondary school their were 4 Claire's/Clare's and 2 Sarah's

at uni 1 Clare and 1 Claire
can't remember any Sarah's

now have SIL Claire and Toddler & Mother friend Claire

Seemingly can't get rid of Claire's, have just met a new Sarah too

Slubberdegullion · 29/07/2008 17:18

Well maybe I am being aggressive, so I'll potter off now.

I am angry because these type of threads are so very pointless.

Wonder what names will or will not be popular in 10-15 years time. Fine.

Do it in a manner that is going to upset someone. Not fine.

What irks is that more commonly than not theses threads do set out to be inherently bitchy, and then there is a whole load of hiding behind:

fgs's

calm down's

if you don't like it just hide it

I know mn is mostly inhabited by vipers with rhino skins, but sometimes the fluffy deers with a little parasol would rather not just log off or hide a thread.

Sometimes they would just to say: stop, think. This is not very nice.

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 17:19

Yeah, but I think Claire and Sarah HAVEN'T gone off despite being popular. Sarah I think is still in the Top 100 today. But some names do. I think it's really interesting, but some people think it's merely offensive and want to pie me in the face

A viper with a rhino skin? Blimey [serene icon]. Not a bit of it. Merely jocular. This topic is full of strong opinions, and though I might tread very carefully and sensitively on other threads (and always try to), names

don't
really
matter

and

are SOOOOOOOOO subjective.

OP posts:
matildax · 29/07/2008 17:28

i think the problem here is, that noone wants to offend, and people will take it very personally if they have named there kids a name that appears on here.
i can see that lady t was only speculating on these names becoming overly popular, ie sharon, tracey or clare were in the 70s. so really there is nothing wrong with it in my opinion, it just means you have really good if not slightly "samey samey" taste as a lot of people. so many more things to get pissed off about than a name for gods sake!!!
i will give you my predict list, and add to this thread the names
ellie
millie
tilly
evie
ella
jack
alfie
freddie
sam
AND just for the record, i REALLY like all of these names, it just so happens that so do 1000's of other people!!

talilac · 29/07/2008 17:34

I'm with Slubber, tbh.

branflake81 · 29/07/2008 17:36

Why should anyone be pissed off if someone doesn't like their child's name? (In fact, since most seem to want their kid to be "unique", they should be pleased).

Preferencs for certain names are just that - preferences, just as I might like Laura Ashley and you Ikea. It's not worth getting uppity about.

I can see why you'd be annoyed if somone who knew you and your child expressed open dislike of their name, but it hardly matters if a bunch of strangers find it repellent.

Ergo - this thread is a bit of fun.

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 29/07/2008 17:39

just another reason why I heart Slub!

and BTW Logan is a scottish name so therefore is never naff on a scottish child.
