Which names do you predict will go rancid in a few years, like Sharon and Tracy did?

I am not saying I don't like these names...but some names get too popular and then they start to smell a bit and seem naff

For girls:

Jade
Ruby? It's the second most popular girl naem nowadays
Aimee
Anything-Mae

For boys:

Rhys
Jayden
Logan

Oh god sorry - didn't mean to offend........
I expect you'd hate my name too, its really boring.
Clue: my mothers other choice was apparently Christine.
Snore

I know a very nice Lisa actually. And she's very pretty. And not at all a slapper.
So there!

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 12:48

And I'm just wondering whether, (and this is just a random thought) if Kate Middleton and Prince William get married and have a baby and they call it Tracy Sharon Deborah Chantelle Windsor people will start thinking these names are 'posh' ??!! And whether they will start using them again????

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 12:50

Or Kevin Darren Barry Wayne Windsor?

LadyThompson · 30/07/2008 12:56

Did you think you'd offended ME?? Cripes, not a bit of it! I spent a good ten years thinking my name was rank and besides, I REALLY don't think names matter overly, and I don't take myself super seriously either. As for the Windsors, interesting that Prince Edward's kids were called James and Louise - as plain as you can get, I think! Probably safe though. James particularly.

i think that Vivienne will become hugely popular thanks to Angelina Jolie choosing it.

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 13:01

Oh that;s true. Knew the girl was called Louise but couldn't remember the boy. Is a nice name but as you say 'safe'. Mind you some of the other royals are a bit mad though aren't they? Isn't there one called Columbus?

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 13:03

yes and he has a brother called cassius. makes me think of cassius Clay.

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 13:03

Vivien is nice, I've always liked it. Wouldn't choose it now though (for that reason).

Mind you, I like Topaz for my next one. And pretty much everyone hates that. [sad} Boo.
Sympathy?

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 13:04

Cassius is better than Columbus surely?

Col- um - BUS! rolls eyes

LadyThompson · 30/07/2008 13:08

Lady Helen thing's kids are Columbus, Cassius, Eloise and Estella. All of which I think are quite nice.

I looked at the other minor royals' little ones and there's

Samuel and Arthur (Lady Sarah Chatto)
Charles and Margarita (Viscount Linley)
and
Zenouska and Christian (Lady Marina Mowatt, Princess Alexandra's daughter)

Topaz was on my list of Hippie names - see previous entry on this thread.

Raahh · 30/07/2008 13:11

I posted about the Diana thing, because it has always intrigued me. People either jump on a name and 20 years later you can't move for Kylies, or just don't...
I bet there were some shocked faces chez Windsor when Princess Anne announced the birth of Zara

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 13:12

Can you think of any nice names beginning with I, U or X ??

Raahh · 30/07/2008 13:13

Imogen (wanted it for dd, dh said no...)

er....

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 13:14

I like Arthur.
And Margarita (but then that's my favorite drink at the mo!)
And I like Christian (but for a girl)

Names are so personal I guess it's pointless getting upset about them.

But it's such a scary thing to do to your child!
My DD1 wants to change her name to Kira (she's 7).
Oh well.

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 13:15

Diana is quite a pretty name.
It is odd that there aren't more of them.
Having said that it wouldn't be one for me

Or maybe it would....?????

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 13:17

xavier for a boy but cant think of any girl names beginning with x

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 13:25

Isla

xena?

Hulababy · 30/07/2008 13:28

LT: Perhaps the key is to pick a name that's been around for yonks and yonks, and not one that people only started using within the last 20 years.

I did! And it was still mentioned as a possibility in one of the very first posts!

LadyThompson · 30/07/2008 13:31

Well, you can't really win Hula! There's always gonna be someone who dislikes your choices or feels sniffy about them. I am a dog lover but I have a completely irrational dislike of spaniels. They are bottom of my list. I don't know why. It's just my particular taste and the idiosyncrasies of human nature!

I've just now read this entire thread and I just knew it had to be LISA the suspense kept me going

silverfrog · 30/07/2008 13:42

I do find this an interesting tpoic - just one of those things you'll never be able to predict, though.

we (as every parent does) thought long and hard over the dds' names, and we are happy with htem, so that is all that counts.

someone earlier on this thread said that no-one ever says to your face that they dislike your dc's name - well they do in my family!

My uncle hates dd2's name 9"what have you called her that for? it's horrible") and hates one of her midle names too. He prefers her second middle name, which is the only on of the three that we would neer consider calling her (she is Beatrice Cecily Caroline).

My step-children hate the name Beatrice too, and weren't slow to tell us (well, to be fair, they didn't, but their mother did!) but as I said earlier, who cares? We like it, so we used it.

as for nice names beginning with I, U or x:

Iona
Imogen
Isolde
Xanthe

any good?

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 13:42

Just realized that ISLA is an anagram of LISA, never noticed that before!

Loriycs · 30/07/2008 13:44

Xanthe thats different how is it pronounced?

Sazisi · 30/07/2008 13:45

To answer the original question, I reckon all the classic names (Rebecca, Sarah , Jack, Molly, Isabel etcetera) are safe; it's the trendy modern names which are likely to date. IMO
