TTC third baby. Hoping for (another) girl. My other 2 girls have slightly unusual but pretty names and need something that 'goes' (so am not considering things like Rachel, Anna, Chloe etc) pretty as they may be. What do you think......or are Topaz and Wallis a stretch too far? My DH also likes Cameron (for a girl) - he wanted it for DH1 and 2, but I didn't go for it.

See, it's growing on you (I knew it would!)
Hee hee!
And yes, cuckooclock I did have Margot (and Margeaux) on my list, and yes, it's still there. Lovely name. DH approves too.

Loving Sycamore too

(only joking. I may be mad, but I'm not THAT mad)

I know you don't like Morag, but how about Morgan, or Morgana? It's Scottish (I think) and was te name of the beauty in the King Arthur tales.

BitOfFun · 01/08/2008 19:45

Róisín is pretty too, but more Irish than Scottish. I shorten it too Rosie for my dd.

frazzledoldbag34 · 01/08/2008 19:50

Morgana.......hmmm will mull that one over.
Can't do Rosie although I love it - (2 Rosie's already in family).

MULLING, MULLING.........

i quite like allegra.

QOD · 01/08/2008 19:52

an aquaintance called her son Cameron, my dd was HORRIFIED

"but it's a GIRLS name"

LOL - cameron diaz...

frazzledoldbag34 · 01/08/2008 19:52

Yes, so do I.
DH not keen although it would 'fit' nicely with the sounds of my other 2 DD's.
Mulling, mulling some more...........

Sorry - should have explained myself better. What I meant was that in RL, regardless of what you call your child, most people will do the standard oh that's lovely response to whatever you call your child. Of course on MN, when you're hiding behind the safety of a screen then you can be a bit more honest!

I know that the name you give your child does tend to affect people's perceptions, rightly or wrongly, but I can't say that I give anymore of my thought time to a child who has a more unusual name.

I take the approach that all children are unique and special, regardless of what name their parent has lumbered them with.

WendyWeber · 01/08/2008 21:37

Topaz was the v charming but wildly OTT stepmother in I Capture the Castle. Nice character but possibly not that endearing in small girl

Wallis is just that Simpson woman

katebee · 01/08/2008 22:27

Please choose Felicity!! It is a lovely name.

I really don't like the names in the OP..Cameron would be awful as a girls name..fine for a boy!

Allegra - yuk makes me think of an Austin car. Pascale ok. Margot - a little eccentric! Makes me think of Penelope Keith in the Good Life!

I do like Felicity!!!

rowingboat · 01/08/2008 22:54

I don't like Felicity - sounds too fussy to me.
Not keen on Margot either.

Quattrocento · 01/08/2008 23:07

I am working on the gemstone idea (Cameron and Wallis both being the wrong side of silly IMO)

Topaz. Okay Topaz. Well it's unusual but have you thought of:

Beryl (oh dear)
Ruby (probably not zany enough for you)
Pearl (nice and traditional and unusual too)
Emerald (now that's okay isn't it)
Lapis (could go horribly wrong when abbreviated)
Diamond (just too ridiculous)
Jade (probably not zany enough for you)
Agate
Garnet
Amethyst
Tourmaline
Onyx
Jasper
Cameo
Carnelian
Citrine
Corundum
Quartz
Sapphire
Moonstone
Opal (too similar to the car)
Spinel (too similar to the musical instrument)
Turquoise

I've run out of ideas

frazzledoldbag34 · 01/08/2008 23:30

Ok, Ruby is IMO too 'common' now - so no (and my SIL is 'saving' it for a girl) so no. (and I've never really liked it anyway).
Pearl - Pearl Lowe - yuck
Emerald - ok but couldn't imagine being called it - can you?
Jade - Jade Goody - uck

and all the others I'm afraid IMHO are also on the wrong side of silly.
But you've obviously put a lot of effort in to the list so thankyou!

By the way, I;m not actually very 'zany' and neither are my other 2 kids names! However, I'm probably not particularly 'dull' either in that I wouldn't check out the top ten babies name list for 2008 and make my selection from there.

I just really liked Topaz. (I actually know of a really nice girl called it too) - always helps to have a positive association I think.

And DH is Scottish and suggested Cameron (and also liked Cameron Diaz I think). Wallis is also his suggestion (again for it's Scottishness - although prob should be Wallace).
Anyway - waffling now

Lydia?

Somebody else is discussing that name in another thread. I'm not that keen personally.

CuckooClockWorkShy · 02/08/2008 13:28

Katebee, the car was the Allegro I think! I love Allegra, it's like the musical term. NIce meaning for a name.

Obviously children are all unique whether they are called Ruby/Emily or Constance/Topaz. That goes without saying.

ajm200 · 02/08/2008 13:57

Personally, I'm not keen on any of them for a girl. I agree with the PP

It's ok to go for an unusual name but you've got to consider how your daughter will feel about it in 30 years time.

If she goes into some serious line of work will she hate a frivilous first name that seemed so cute when she was a babe in arms.

frazzledoldbag34 · 02/08/2008 15:12

Condoleeza Rice? (surely Condoleeza is a makeyuppy?!)

Cherie Blair?

Am sure there are others too...........but don't have the time right now to think about it!

Don't see them being penalised or being held back in their careers for having, as you put it 'frivolous names'.......

OP posts:
ajm200 · 02/08/2008 16:44

I'm not saying that she would be held back but she might not like her name much.

I like Wallis and I know a Cameron (girls)...though I wouldn't call them 'pretty' names. You're very organised to think of names so early on...maybe it'll be a boy!

rowingboat · 02/08/2008 17:50

I suggest Marion for a boy or Jet.

Dalrymps · 02/08/2008 17:53

What about Drew for a girl?

MerryMarigold · 02/08/2008 21:20

I like Blythe. But dh didn't. I think it's lovely, happy and very pretty.

HonoriaGlossop · 02/08/2008 21:57

oooh Blythe is a really beautiful name....

frazzled, you HAVE to like Blythe...
