Topaz? or Wallis for my third (hopefully) girl? Or neither ? All feedback gratefully received........

TTC third baby. Hoping for (another) girl. My other 2 girls have slightly unusual but pretty names and need something that 'goes' (so am not considering things like Rachel, Anna, Chloe etc) pretty as they may be. What do you think......or are Topaz and Wallis a stretch too far? My DH also likes Cameron (for a girl) - he wanted it for DH1 and 2, but I didn't go for it.

A boy? easy! Wallace or Toby.

lotuseener · 28/07/2008 21:31

Topaz is a name only suitable for drag queens!!!!

2point4kids · 28/07/2008 21:34

Topaz and Wallis are dreadful.
All your more recent suggestions much nicer imo

Florence, Felicity and Allegra are lovely

frazzledoldbag34 · 28/07/2008 21:39

Well I suppose it MIGHT be a boy
(LOOKS DOUBTFUL)

........but I don't like ANY boys names.
Not a single one.

Oh dear.

Topaz sounds like a the bitch in a Jilly Cooper novel.

I like Margaux - was on the short list for dd.

frazzledoldbag34 · 28/07/2008 21:44

Really? What did you call her in the end then? (Sorry am nosy!).......

frazzled I hope you have a boy so that you can discover the utter joy of gorgeous boys and there are loads of lovely boys names; I agree there are MORE nice girl's names to choose from and of course you're very focussed on them because that's what you've needed so far

for boys I am currently liking

Theo
Beau
Guy
Leo

Wot fink?

Roboshua · 28/07/2008 22:46

Topaz is lovely. Wallis is awful. She will be known as Wallis and Gromit for the rest of her life. (Can't rember is Wallis is the dog or the geek).

TwoBigNorks · 29/07/2008 09:41

love Margot

gladders · 29/07/2008 12:09

florence and flora both lovely - but wouldn't use flora as surely all other kids would call her marg?

don't think there are too many arabella's around (only know of one) - if you like that then there's annabella, isabella etc?

Lionstar · 29/07/2008 12:14

Topaz is the name of a shop around here (Guildford) too - a sort of home furnishings and bits and bobs place.

I quite like Allegra though (but wasn't it a car?)

eilidhfi · 29/07/2008 12:26

I know a girl called Wallis and a girl called Cameron. Doesn't Cameron mean crooked nose though?!

Unconventional Scottish names...

Morna
Eriska (like the island)
Rhona

frazzledoldbag34 · 29/07/2008 18:21

Thanks so much for all the feedback
Am still undecided however.
But its great to hear everyone's opinions and suggestions.....

In reply to Honoria IF I do have a boy I will be so shocked as to be rendered temporarily speechless. However am sure I will be absolutely delighted with whichever sex I'm blessed with.......am quite keen on Theo (although I did know of one at Uni who was sadly a bit of a ponce

Quite like Munro? That's the only one I can be remotely enthusiastic about. Although actually just remembered Kirstie Allsopp has a baby boy called Bay doesn't she? Quite like Bay (OK I know its a bit bizarre). Perhaps the male version of Topaz?

OP posts:
frazzledoldbag34 · 29/07/2008 18:22

Expect everyone will hate Bay. Am bracing myself.......

OP posts:
HonoriaGlossop · 29/07/2008 18:30

I like Munro, and Bay!

kittywise · 29/07/2008 18:33

topaz sounds like a lap dancer
wallis, a shop or a wally

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/07/2008 18:40

Please have Felicity. I would have had Felicity if my surname didn't begin with an F!
I also really like Aurora, Esmerelda, Evangeline, Caitlin & Isabella. Didn't make the final cut with my DD though.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/07/2008 18:40

And am I the only one who thinks of Cameron Diaz rather than a boy for Cameron?

frazzledoldbag34 · 29/07/2008 19:33

Elf - I do like Felicity, will have to run it past DH and see what he thinks
......as for your other suggestions we have already used up one of your suggestions on one of our other DD's so we obviously have a similar taste in baby names!

What did you go for in the end for your DD?

And yes, my husband likes Cameron because he's Scottish but only for a girl (not for a boy bizarrely) and I'm sure it's got something to do with Miss Diaz!

Esmerelda - is that cool? Undecided whether that would invoke horror to the degree I seem to have created with the suggestion of Topaz?

Which (by the way) I still quite like despite all of the slagging off it has got!

snice · 29/07/2008 19:37

How about Verity?
Prefer Sylvie to Sylvia

frazzledoldbag34 · 29/07/2008 19:38

Nope. Makes me think of ferrets. Sorry.

OP posts:
Springflower · 29/07/2008 19:47

What about Tiree (as in the island?)

DarrellRivers · 29/07/2008 19:49

Felicity-fab
Topaz-I'm quite a fan reminds me of Dodie Smith and I Capture the Castle ( a favourite teenage read)

Call her Topaz

Ellbell · 29/07/2008 20:05

Topaz - nooooooo!
Cameron - boy (or 'named after David?')
Wallis - don't like it myself, but my first thought was Wallis Simpson, not the shop (Is Wallis-the-shop frumpy and middle-aged, btw? Oh dear! )
Wallace (and Grommit - don't go there)

Your second attempts were better (IMHO). I like both Allegra and Felicity (the one I knew at school shortened it to Flick). Agree that Ruby is very popular now. DD currently has a 'pretend friend' called Onyx. Not sure if that would work as a 'real name' if you're looking for an unusual '[semi-]precious stone' name. (I wouldn't choose it myself, but I have far more 'bog-standard' tastes to you!)

I'd have been horrified by Esmerelda until a few weeks ago, but I met a very nice one (shortened to Esme, which is a name I like in its own right) recently and it could grow on me.

frazzledoldbag34 · 29/07/2008 20:16

Oh DarrellRivers I do like you! Which reminds me I must look out my old Mallory Towers books for my eldest DD.

Perhaps Topaz Felicity would be nice?

Or Bay Munro for a boy?
Or Blair?

(but I don't do boys. Well, not yet anyway......)

Onyx - um, I don't think so. Fine for a pretend friend tho

Tiree - sorry, yuck. (Sorry if that's the name of one of your kids.....)
